One of these woman (Sheila Horne, now Sheila Brody) is my mother and has gone on to be Blackwood in Italy, Amuka here in the states, half of Civil Attack with my father Stephen Washington (of Slave and Aurra) and worked more recently with Public Enemy on their Everything album. She has accomplished a lot in her life and it's about time she gets the credit she deserves. An amazing woman, performer and mother. I really wish all these women hadn't been left out of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, they deserve better. I'm going to make sure my mom at least gets all the fame and adoration she deserves. It's the least I can do for all she has done for me and my brother Oliver. Love her with all my heart.

Ive had this LP on import in the uk since it came out. Blew my mind especially this track. Bootsy and funkadelic fan i think it was a DJ here on the BBC called Joh Peel who gave this a spin. Im also a slave and Aurra fan so huge respect to your parents for the music from a 62 year old dude in the uk👍 Peace

Much respect to your mom and dad! Both pioneers and amazing talent! Thanks for sharing them! Your mom is fantastic! Always a pleasure to see he live performances. Been a fan for many years. Just saw her on the David Letterman show (RU-vid) with Bernie, George, Mike Hampton and Mudbone doing backup vocals for Bernie's album back in 1990.

I heard this back in the early 80's. Instantly it became one of my all-time favorite jams. Had the vinyl, but I lost it. I had to search for years and YEARS. Years even before CDs became mainstream. I never thought I'd find it. When Napster was born, I had FINALLY found it - I couldn't believe it. I was SO freaking happy! Now it's finally available as an mp3. But I agree with the earlier poster who said the vinyl version with the crackles will always sound best.

I was pretty young during that time period. I was 12 in '79. And I was a Parliament Funkadelic fan back then. I got some of the nuances of George Clinton's funk - like the character Sir Nose D'Void of Funk. But I was still too young to understand just how funky the man was. And just how he created a funky explosion of the genre. I saw Parliament with LTD and the Gap Band back in the day. And I liked the other two groups better because I think I was too young to really appreciate Parliament.

+Charles Martin Absolutely. George is like Miles Davis...if you "got it" he finds you, you don't need to go find him! George has got incredible ears. Once Bernie showed him how musical and jazz-like p-funk really was, he pretty went after young musicians with jazz-funk and outside-the-box improvisation qualities like Bernie. Miles did the same thing :-)

Jazz is seriously overrated and fundamentally doesn't have a lot to do with funk as far as I'm concerned. The greatest songs by the P-Funk clan have a lot of COMPOSITION going on, not just endless noodling and dicking around. The structure in most jazz is unbelievably boring. You have the "song" at the beginning (the only good part), then you have a procession of soloists jacking off their instruments while the rest provide background support but essentially no interaction with the soloist, and most of the soloists in the band aren't even worth listening to but you have to suffer through it just so you can hear the one or two you do like. Funk is a community making harmonious music together, and jazz is a bunch of individuals with a spotlight on them to do whatever the fuck they want for 3 minutes each with others holding the music together. Wow, how compelling, definitely in the same league as these genius multi-layered compositions by George Clinton--not. There are some exceptional jazz records, mostly by Miles Davis, but overall the entire genre could be whittled down by 95% and the world would be a better place.
@MaestroTJS
@MaestroTJS 7 лет назад
Philip Spencer A guy who can't even string a sentence together and uses "your" instead of "you're" hardly has the right to throw around the word "idiot." I know exactly what I'm talking about and my musical tastes are varied--hence why I think jazz is a crappy form of musical expression. I haven't said anything about their abilities to play their instruments. They were virtuosos, I get it. I also don't care. They were terrible composers, and as I said, for the most part, you have to sit through a bunch of solos by the rest of the semi-talented members in the band, which makes the whole thing tedious as hell. In classical music, there were also a lot of virtuosos that we have forgotten about because they weren't worth remembering besides being footnotes in history. You haven't actually addressed any of my criticisms of jazz, you've just name-called and thrown out a bunch of names of jazz musicians, none of which constitutes a counter-argument. Go enjoy your boring jazz albums, listening to a bunch of guys jacking their instruments off in your ear. As a bonus point, I have to say I really love how jazz musicians and afficionados call what they do "live composition" as opposed to "improvisation," as though that makes it more intelligent and better than what non-jazz musicians do on stage.

My granny had a saying "Without humps, There would be no getting over" You pay for what you get And hardly ever get what you paid for Life's full of ups and downs You got to find your own high ground Mother Wit is your connection Use it for your protection Mother Wit is all you get In your live-life You got to dance to it When you do it She'll never tell you How to live your love-life Just a little discretion Was her only suggestion It's not such a mean, old world To be happy-go-funky Come alive and get spunky And you'll never buy Texas from a cowboy And never buy a bridge While you're in Brooklyn Oh, I was raised on a farm Way back up in the woods Full of 13 children; never been to school Granny had a plan Mother Wit, she called "Never been to school is no reason to be a fool" To be happy-go-funky Come alive and get spunky And you'll never buy Texas from a cowboy And don't buy a bridge While you're in Brooklyn Mother Wit is all you got You got to trust your funk Mother Wit is all you got You got to trust your funk Mother Wit is all you got You got to trust your funk If you can't dance through it Don't do it If you can dance and get through to it Do it When reason just don't make no sense You got to use your funk When "use some sense" is not enough You got to use your funk Though, Mother Wit is a kind of nonsense It helps you over the hump If you can't dance to it Don't do it But if you can dance and get through to it Then, do it, dear Can I get away? If you can't dance to it Don't do it But if you can dance and get through to it Then, do it In your live-life Mother Wit is all you get In your love-life (In your love-life) Hey! To be happy-go-funky Come alive and get spunky And you'll never buy Texas from a cowboy And never buy a bridge While you're in Brooklyn To be happy-go-funky Come alive and get spunky And you'll never buy Texas from a cowboy And never buy a bridge While you're in Brooklyn To be happy-go-funky Come alive and get spunk And you'll never buy Texas from a cowboy (Way back!) And never buy a bridge While you're in Brooklyn To be happy-go-funky Come alive and get spunky And you'll never buy Texas from a cowboy And never buy a bridge While you're in Brooklyn If you think you can dance to it Get to it; get to it If you think you can dance and get through to it Then, do it; then, do it If you think you can dance and get through to it Then, do it; do it Oh, do it, dear Way back! To be happy-go-funky Come alive and get spunky And you'll never buy Texas from a cowboy And never buy a bridge While you're in Brooklyn Mother Wit is all you get in your live-life You got the dance to it Oh, go on, do it She'll never tell you how to live your love-life Just a little discretion Was her only suggestion Mother Wit It's all you get In your live-long, your live-long, Live-long, live-long, live-long life Way back Mother Wit goes back; hey, hey Through your live-life Hey, to be happy-go-funky Come alive and get spunky And you'll never buy Texas from a cowboy And never buy a bridge While you're in Brooklyn To be happy-go-funky Come alive and get spunky (Come alive; come alive; let's get funky) And you'll never buy Texas from a cowboy (Way back!) And never buy a bridge While you're in Brooklyn To be happy-go-funky Come alive and get spunky And you'll never buy Texas from a cowboy And never buy a bridge While you're in Brooklyn Can I go way back? Way back!
