ZAKIM BRIDGE WAS BUILT BY THE SAME COMPANY FIGG CONSTRUCTION????????????? IN BOSTON,MASS IN 2003--SUSPENTION BRIDGE WITH TOWER SUPPORTS STILL STANDS TODAY WITH 6 LANE TRAFFIC
Steven Marzullo but it obviously would fail without a proper test that included all of the anchors under the same pressure , the weight was not equal making the bridge collapse , its pretty a dumb mistake tho.
Sammy talks, you are a pile a Sh...Poo. Someone feels sorry for people being hurt/killed in something they have no control over and you come back with that comment. Please go eat some tide pods. Its what all the cool kids are doing. Might help you fit in.
A 950 ton section of a suspension bridge with no suspension cables, proper truss format, or center support on a busy road... Bad decisions that costs lives. It almost looks like they tried to make it look more like a work of art than a practical design. Shameful.
EXACTLY!!! I've been saying this all day but you are literally the only other person I've seen today mention this, honestly it's quite impressive to have supported itself the way it did without its tower and suspenders. pbs.twimg.com/media/C_EeytwXcAA0tRH.jpg
I live right by the area, I was a bit skeptical about it and thinking how all the compressive load would be on the top section without a form of an arch, but never expected it to collapse
They cared more about "making history" than safety. Supposedly it was the largest bridge that was moved into position or something. Why not close the road to all traffic before testing? That's what I don't get...
In the renderings, there us a center support for it but not on the one that just collapsed. news.fiu.edu/2016/02/fiu-selects-mcmfigg-to-design-and-build-pedestrian-bridge-across-8th-street/97102
Bradley Waters I'm not sure how this was constructed as it seems it was done off site according to this from the DM: "The 174-foot 'instant bridge' hailed as a feat of engineering and safety, was installed Saturday morning but was not due to open to the public until 2019." Supposedly stress tests were being done on this pedestrian walk way without closing the 8 lanes to traffic. Sounds like it wasn't a feat of Engineering unless homicide was the goal.
Bradley Waters I believe it was a precast single span, no center pier, though there is rebar in the bridge, the majority of it's structural integrity come from post tension cable installed longitudinally in the structure. Premature to know what caused the failure, could be any number of factors, sad for the victims and their families.
SUSPENSION BRIDGE NEEDS TOWER SUPPORTS ON BOTTOM THERE WAS CRACKING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BRIDGE ON THE WALKWAY ZAKIM BRIDGE HAS 6 LANES HIGHWAY WITH BIKE .WALKWAYPATH IN BOSTON,MASS
isabellaXO it was under construction idiot. Also I believe this is what happens when you allow anyone do construction... American construction workers who built large bridges didn’t create stable bridges because of a abundance of time to build it but the actual capability of its foundation and frame... the frame would never have gave in if they did the proper construction.
That bridge does not look professional does not even look stable this was an accident waiting to happen the bridge doesn’t even look like It should be there.. this is fishy to me
pbs.twimg.com/media/C_EeytwXcAA0tRH.jpg It was supposed to be a suspension bridge but they constructed it in reverse to save on time, it was only a matter of time before the thing collapsed without its central tower and suspenders to support its weight.
It was a prototype using special self cleaning concrete for the first time in a bridge structure. The test obviously failed, I hope they test in a lab next time though!
You're so right, when I lived in San Francisco, the GG went to the lowest bidder and I said that was dangerous and they had cable problems after as well as a large metal frame fell from above after they opened the bridge and luckily didn't land on a car, as well as The new Bay Bridge went to the lowest, Chinese bidder and now that bridge has no resolution on how to fix and the multi million dollar cost that they will cost the tax payers in many years to come. I told people I'll wait on crossing the bridges and got laughed at first. Who's laughing now?
Chuan Jiang Since it's technically a public structure, the information would be available to the public. Of course, the records are stored in a rusted shut filing cabinet in small janitor's closet, guarded by a panther, in the very back of a ill lit basement with no stairs. Just in case a person of the public would like to ensure the bridge was built up to code and completely safe.
Prayers for everyone 👏❤️🙏such a tragedy a nightmare...I can't even imagine what these families are going through..families trapped in cars, crushed. Praying for all
Tipthe Scales because we too many liberals are polluting the environment and messing everything up. I miss the good olde days before all the liberals migrated to fl
Wow, this has always been one of my WORST NIGHTMARES!!!! My family used to fry me cause I'd FREAK everytime we'd be under a bridge in traffic or ontop of the 3mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Sending prayers from Virginia!
FOX NEWS SAID IT WAS A CHEAP BRIDGE TOO SAME COMPANY THAT BUILT THE SKYWAY BRIDGE IN 1980S IN TAMPA THAT ONE IS CRUMBLING TOO AS OF 2017 ITS CHIPPING BAD OFF THE TOWER SUPPORTS
I was working at FIU when this happened. I was at the second closest building from the bridge.I even drove under it only half an hour before it collapsed.Later I saw the crushed cars and lots of blood coming from under the crushed cars. Terrible. The bridge was placed (not built on site) this past Saturday but it was still under construction. Traffic was allowed to go through because supposedly it was a new building technique that was safe for traffic...I wonder if they will abandon this project or if they will try again. The thing is that a few students have also been killed by cars while they were crossing that very dangerous street. That was the purpose for the bridge. There are dorms across that street... Guess we'll see
issaciams There are jokes because this is the bullying, callus and desensitized society that we created. 'people died, so what? It wasn't me or mine.' That's the attitude in a lot of tragedies today.
Sometimes, people joke because it's all they can do to keep themselves sane in all the mess and tragedy. It might not be appropriate, but...at least we don't have their bodies, as well. 😶
There are a million ways to cope. Making excuses for insensitivity is not one of them. If what you said was true, then the same people would be tickled pink when their child is shot just for going out and riding a bike. Or they could cope by not taking the time to type a nasty unfunny 'joke' for the eyes of others.
issaciams Don't you see that all of the jokers here don't care about others people's lives? These are real people. These are real insensitive humans out there.
I honestly can't believe this happened considering we are decently advanced in engineering. It really shows the reality of how one little mistake can cause this. I hope everyone made it out alive. Edit: I learned that 6 people have died so far. My condolences for the victims of this unexpected tragedy.
S D because it doesn't need one and theres a highway underneath. They used triangle construct but it looks like the idiot who designed it tried to use the least amount of materials to support the sides
I love how when these things happen in the US, rescue guys are all just standing around doing NOTHING. Crane and bull dozer are right there, start lifting some concrete and get some people out of there that might still be alive! Good grief. Look at all of the vehicles and guys just standing there. I wonder if it would be the same if their kids were under there. There never seems to be any sense of urgency.
Sadly, that looks like every construction site. A lot of people standing around doing nothing. To be fair, here there wasn't a lot they could do without causing harm to themselves and other possible victims.
Oh yea right!! You really expect them to just be able to pick up 20 tin slabs of concrete with their bare hands??? Get real and stop criticizing when you don’t even know the facts.
Thats because there isnt. Everyone is already thinking about who's gonna win the big lawsuit. The dead are just names on paper that make them more money, and sympathy for the jury when they plead their case.
Captain Obvious no matter what the prayer is, (even though it's pretty damn obvious what she's praying for) who's he's/she's praying for, or how much it will LITERALLY do nothing. Action will.
dsmracer97 no, but hopefully they will allow young people to go to school without being shot to death, by raising the age limit for those wanting to buy guns, to only mature adults whose brains are fully developed. Raise the age limit for driving, liquor and combat too.
Jessica LT the age limit is 18 for rifles and 21 for handguns which are used in way more murders than rifles. I have a ton of rifles that were purchased at 18 including a couple AR 15s it’s not a horrible idea to change the age to 21 for rifles but that’s not exactly going to fix everything either. I got my first rifle at 14. It’s not real hard to get a gun outside of stores that sell them. Lol. Also half of our military consists of 18 year olds so they’re fully mature enough to handle a firearm. The problem is parents not teaching their kids the Value of life and how to safely use a firearm.
There is NO EXCUSE for this tragedy.....who approved the design? Origin of materials? What engineering firm was awarded the contract? We're they related to any of the organizations? Which construction firm got the contract? Again....Concrete adds too much weight to a foot bridge...this is Horrific and inexcusable
Barbara Perry concrete isnt a problem.the problem is there wasnt a center part to hold the center part of the bridge plus cars drived under while it was under construction
Wow, I hope everyone ends up OK. It seems there have been a lot of bridge collapses in the last few years and all of them were new bridges. We've been build successful bridges for centuries, WTH Happened?
Molon Gangsta 2 things happen in different parts of a large state......and you call it a bad year? Wait til global warming puts all of florida in the ocean, then you can call it a bad year
IT is Prefabricated bridge ,+ bad engineering ,rush ....The traditional construction methods are a lot better options in terms of safety and quality. and I feel sorry for the victims...by former construction worker.
In all seriousness, the girl on thephone is bllleeeessed man wow..god had his hand on her..she just drove under it n then hears it fall a few moments later...WOW!
Mr. Meeseeks i live in South Florida. The bridge wasn't open to the public yet. The street was reopen to the public. The bridge was being built off the side of the road, on Saturday they moved the bridge so it was over the 6 lanes of traffic.
George Vera sadly it’s a new technology they teach at FIU to cut the time of building bridges. This bridge was actually built on sight at 5he university.. they just installed it on Saturday as they also did a stress test which might of weaken it.. it’s terrible but someone dropped the ball here
My student housing was near there. I was happy to hear about a pedestrian bridge because crossing really was dangerous. Horrifying to hear this tragedy.
Can anyone say, "gross culpable negligence"? Pierce corporate veil... Take corporation owner's assets... And construction license... Should never have happened... Follow the money.
Praying for everyone involved . Sad the people in charge invest more of the money in their beach houses then fixing the community , an people pay with they lives :(
Cite your source that there was a gun on the bridge. Even when the postmortem comes out and says the weight of a single gun triggered the collapse, it has nothing to do with the functionality of the gun -- only its weight.
+Steve Wilcox Apparently the original design has it as a cable stayed bridge. It was unfinished but the company decided to stress test the design, while traffic was flowing under it, for maximum creds apparently. Have some pictures. news.fiu.edu/wp-content/uploads/bridge-model.jpg pbs.twimg.com/media/DYGD10hWkAAr6gE.jpg:large pbs.twimg.com/media/DYW1ftIWAAARw6U.jpg
Right on! I am with you on this for sure! We HAVE TO DO SOMETHING! The removal of all bridges must happen! For the love of Pete, NO MORE BRIDGES! Pedestrian and any other kind of bridge must go!
I love near there...good thing my sister was at the University before it collapsed like 5 minutes later 0_o pray to those people who were under that bridge..
"It wasn't exactly that cars were going on this pedestrian walkway, because it was obviously for pedestrians." That was some amazing news work right there.
