This episode does a really good job of showcasing why Penelope created an alter ago like Lady Whistledown for herself. This is a young girl who is constantly pushed into the shadows by society and is ridiculed if she even tries to associate with someone in the spotlight, much less step into it herself. And it's not just society, her own family constantly undermines her, her interests, denies her the joy of feeling beautiful or wanted or even likeable. But, living life on the sidelines has also granted her the superpower of hearing every conversation around her without ever being noticed by anyone. Through Whistledown, Penelope is finally heard, acknowledged, appreciated, and respected by the ton. Imagine the kind of satisfaction she feels when her family, who've put her and her beliefs down all her life, drop everything they're doing and scramble to get their hands on the latest Whistledown sheet to read what she has to say. Whistledown is essential to Penelope's growth as an individual. It's given her a voice, agency, financial independence, and a purpose. Right now, the Featherington family is surviving on Lady Whistledown's money, they've just been made to believe it's an inherentance from a spinster aunt. Can you imagine how big of a deal it is for a woman to be the breadwinner of a noble household in the regency era? Penelope/Lady Whistledown is a grey character, for sure, because what she says hurts people, and yet, she's essentially a regency journalist cause she only tells the truth. So, when Penelope decides to use her platform to protect her identity, she does it because nobody has as much to lose as her in that situation. Penelope ends Eloise's friendship with Theo knowing she's saving Eloise from a much bigger scandal and that Eloise will still go back to a loving family and tons of respect in society for being a Bridgerton, at the end of the day. What Eloise doesn't realise at the end of season 2 is that when Pen says she gave up Whistledown for her, it means she gave up her whole life for her, and if I'm being honest, Eloise is just slightly too privileged to understand that. After Eloise says she never wants to see her again and Colin says he'd never dream of courting Penelope, she's a woman who's lost everything. I think it's pretty cool that she decides to pick up her pen again instead of pitying herself. I mean, society never gave her a chance, but atleast she does.

A minor correction: They are not actually surviving on Lady Whistledown's money. They changed that from the book. On the show, Portia made up the inheritance to cover the money she got from the scam. They are living off the money Portia and Jack scammed for the -- was it a ruby mine? -- in season two. The show repurposed Penelope's generous fake inheritance scheme from the book for this.

I understand why people dislike Penelope for being Lady Whistledown. But this season made it clear that Lady whistledown wasn't created by Penelope, it's just her echoing cruelty that Portia Featherington has taught her. Cressida and Penelope come from very cold and dismissive families. Cruelty and Manipulation is their first language. Another Masterpiece from Lady Shonda Rhimes.

Not just Portia, the ton as an entity. She doesn't make anything up. She only repeats what people are already talking about. The only two times she's strayed from this and started the gossip(although, still true) was with Marina and with Eloise, and both times had major external factors at play. The thing about Lady Whistledown is that(generally) she's a mirror to the ton, reflecting their own cruelty back on themselves. The same people who disdain others' for their scandals perpetuate their own. The ton(as a group, not individuals) are hypocrites.

@@KimberlyKohn 100% agree with this. And the mirror analogy can be used on this season as a whole: Eloise and Cressida are holding up mirrors to each other (metaphorically) that’s forcing them to reexamine their behavior; LW and the other Bridgertons hold up a mirror in front of Colin to say “is this who you really are, or just a part you’re playing?” and so on. There’s a lot of reflection and self-examination going on this season with so many of the characters, and it’s fitting that it’s happening when Pen and Colin are at the forefront of the storyline

I think he realizes that hanging around her as a grown man is suspicious if he's not courting her. Look at the glares her maid is giving him. If she marries someone else, they won't be able to be friends like they were as kids. I think that Pen has made peace with it, but he keeps acting as if they were kids, chasing her around and being inappropriate by being alone with her, shaking her hand, etc.

I know that some people aren’t too happy with Eloise being friends with Cressida, but I really love it. I think Cressida is teaching Eloise to actually listen to what people have to say, and Eloise is teaching Cressida what it’s like to have a friend. I loved Pen and Eloise’s friendship in previous seasons, but Eloise never listened to her, and always assumed they were on the same path in life. It’s only when El finally listened did she figure out Pen’s secret, which doesn’t excuse what Pen did. I’m really hoping they can reconcile.

Penelope doesn’t need to redeem herself other than making things right with Eloise, although I still think she ultimately saved her from the queen with the least damage she could. Other than that, the rest of the ton deserve what they get from Whistledown. They have been cruel to Penelope and her family all her life. Look at ep 1 of season 1 when Cressida gleefully humiliates her in front of Colin. Look at all those awful mothers, many whose daughters are unmarried ganging up on her. I don’t blame her utilising her wallflower status to collect gossip and earn an income which she could one day use to escape her awful family. Sure, Cressida was fine this week, but she’s been a nasty bully for years. I’m not letting her off the hook just yet. Loved the kiss. Penelope saying goodbye to any hope she had of love or happiness before she disappears to the shadows. But Colin’s world just flipped upside down.

This is why I always find your reaction to Penelope so harsh lol yes, she has made mistakes, but I think that a lot of people keep forgetting that this is a teenager… and she made a lot of mistakes, but it was her dealing, badly, with being bullied in the ton and at home. She was never doing it maliciously, usually she was just trying to fix something and went about it the wrong way. Pen asked for a kiss because she really thought she would never be loved and she thought it would be her only kiss. He mom herself literally told her she was delusional basically. She has lost all hope.
@booknerd_charlie

Yes, I think it’s unfair to harshly criticize Pen for her actions when others are not faultless in theirs as well. If we’re going to call out Pen, then we should call out Eloise for her selfish recklessness last season and Cressida for her actions every single season, for example. None of the characters here are entirely innocent and the world is not so black and white; we can bring understanding to a person’s actions even if we don’t morally agree with them. People are nuanced, and our examinations of their behavior should also be.

It's worth remembering that Eloise was a huge fan of Lady Whistledown in the first season for speaking her mind and making money with it (being a woman), she only started to hate Lady Whistledown when her family started to be negatively cited. As we say here in Brazil, this is a classic example of "pimenta no cu dos outros é refresco" (pepper in other people's asses is refreshment)
@HuntingViolets
@HuntingViolets 2 месяца назад
She was looking for Whistledown at one point because she admired her, yes, and later because the Queen tasked her with it. But when her family was negatively impacted was the same time Penelope's family was negatively impacted (and theirs more, as Colin was a man), and at that point, Eloise began to look for Whistledown to get her to retract what she had said about Penelope's family. I think at that point, she saw Whistledown as a damaging force, but she really wanted a retraction to help Penelope. She still helped Whistledown escape, soon after talking to Mme. Delacroix (whom she suspected) and thinking she would get one. And, then, at the beginning of season 2, everything had died down a little, and Eloise had lost interest in Whistledown as a writer and was reading Wollstonecraft _(A Vindication of the Rights of Women)._ She didn't think Whistledown had much substance, at that point, but I don't think she hated her. She was drawn back in by the (single) column Penelope wrote after that, but I think she always wanted to get that retraction, somehow.

I think being constantly put down affects how Pen presents herself in society, people also look down on her because of it. She's attractive and smart so there should have been no reason for her mom to not have tried to get her married for 3 years or to at least introduce her Lady Danbury after seeing what she did for others. Eloise even laughs when she hears that Penelope is looking for a husband. I mean why wouldn't she with the family she has at home and their financial struggles? This makes me wonder if Pen keeps all that in or if Eloise just doesn't listen, because as a best friend how could you not know these things?
@HuntingViolets
@HuntingViolets 2 месяца назад
Sometimes Eloise has asked Penelope things, and she has deflected or changed the subject. When Eloise thought she was crying because her father died and tried to comfort her, she said to tell her something nice to get her mind off it. In the very lovely scene where she and Eloise lay on the grass and Eloise told her how she hated being a disappointment to her mother, she also told Penelope it was all right to like society and all of that although she didn't. Penelope told her how she liked being unseen and hearing things, but it would have been a good opportunity to tell her more. I think Eloise never realizing Penelope has a crush on Colin is more about her discounting Colin than discounting Penelope. Eloise does have a dream of them being spinsters together, but Penelope never let her know she wanted different things until the time she yelled at Eloise about it. And I don't think, despite what Eloise says about thinking she never listened to it, that Penelope really ever gossiped to her the way she did that one day when the penny (no pun intended) dropped. I think she couldn't see Penelope was Whistledown because she was too close and Eloise loved her too much. I don't doubt they will reconcile, although how it will happen is in doubt.
@booknerd_charlie
@booknerd_charlie 2 месяца назад
@@HuntingVioletsI think that conversation last season showed Eloise that she didn’t really take the time to look at her friend for who she is and really see her, and that Eloise is not the “great listener” she may have considered herself to be. If you go back to a lot of their interactions, it’s more often Eloise talking at Pen or Pen just acquiescing to whatever Eloise says/wants. If nothing else, I think the fallout with Pen and the friendship with Cressida is holding up a mirror in front of Eloise so she can do some actual self-reflection. While Pen needs to atone for LW, Eloise needs to reconsider how she approaches being a good friend. It’s the only way they can both grow from this and perhaps reconcile

It's a bit hypocritical to find Penelope's lookinh through Colin's stuff at his house disgusting, but not Eloise doing the same in Penelope's house. Eloise ruined herself, Penelope actually saved her and her sisters from becoming prostitutes, because that would have been the consequence of Eloise being alone with Theo, unchaperoned, after being warned multiple times it would be extremely dangerous, and it would ruin her and her entire family. You can read Jane Austen's books and read what fate would await ruined women in Regency era. For example Lydia (and by extention all the Bennett sisters) almost becoming a prostitute for eloping. Penelope just reports what's going on, and keeps saving the Bridgertons over and over again.
@Hania2207

In my opinion, Penelope isn't a bullied, a villain, or whatever people want to define her. She is complex, and like any human being she has light and shadows inside of her (all of us have inside of us this good verse evil, angel verse devil), she definitely chooses everyday good with a bit of salt/shadow, like the ying and yang, because even doing mistakes that may hurt people, she also do it while she tries to fix it, even in a twisted way, she does. Knowing that when she started lw at the age of 16-17, when our brains only becomes completely mature around 25 years of age, and our emotions it is in its highest pick of a constant rollercoster during our teen years, Penelope managing such power with her emotions so highlighted, where everyone reads every single word that she writes while also being bullied and belittled in society and she still managed to not write anything to get revenge on those people, it is already impressive on its one. Us as viewers seeing how she is overlooked by the ton, by her own family and even by herself who thinks so lowly of herself, can we blame her to have such a pride and a strong attachment of lw who shines in world who cares so much about appearance, property and looks? Which gives her a purpose beyond being a girl looking to be a wife (plus unsuccessfully)? Which gives her a voice when, as Penelope, no one listens to her? As Penelope Featherington, she is person who is/can be kind, warm, shy, cleaver, understanding of others feelings, a good listener to her friends she gives her fully attention and tries to give them good advice that they ignore or don't listen to, she wants to help people and she is comprehensive, she is witty, smart and wants/wanted to be friendly to people of the ton. But people ignores her, overlooked her, underestimate her, she is in most of the corners in society, people and herself in part put there, in part because she is shy being one of the reasons that she holds that position where no one gives a second glance even with the brightest of dresses, hopeful eyes and sweet smiles. Since her very first appearance in society, when she and her sisters were presented to the queen who ignored them, she was put as a wallflower, in the background of people stories, seeing stories developing right in front of her eyes, while is stuck in the corners because no one comes to give her attention, let's not forget at this time period only the men could aproche the girls. Because of it, she saw and heard things (about herself and about others) that made her in part to lose slowly that hope and naivety that she had in the beginning, she saw what society truly was : hypocrites, superficial people and some of them being the cruelest (in episode 1 of this season for example, Pen/lw published good impressions of some of debutantes/I think are girls in "risk" of becoming spinster to help them up/uplift their spirits and in this episode 2, those same girls were now mocking her because Colin was helping her). We need also to understand that Queen Charlotte by choosing a diamond, it is just adding more to the superficiality of the ton and how or who or the type of women the men/people need to give their attention when searching for a match, only because of their looks and social connections ( I am not sure what is the criteria that Charlotte chooses the diamond). And even the Queen herself is always eager to read about the ton gossip. So much so that last season, when Charlotte thought that Eloise is LW, she suggested that LW could be more than a gossip sheet, but also, an ally to the crown. With LW, is Penelope's shadow figure who hides in a secret identity, where she can speak/write freely her truths as a girl/woman who doesn't have a voice (or even rarely are the people who listen to her as Penelope) or having power in society ruled majority by men, who are the ones who can only choose the girls they want to aproche, speak and dance with and the ones who choose to call on the girl or not. She can use her wit to show how hypocritical the ton can be. As Lw, she is cunning, harsh at times by telling truths that may hurt but are truthful, criticising their behaviour and ways of thinking and judging the society she lived all her live, and obviously she too can at times make mistakes and use wrong words, or even with hot-head to write something she will/could regreat in the future. But we also see she doesn't publish everything she finds out when she sees that it is too much. For example, in the last episode of the 2nd season, Penelope hears the servants talk about how Lord Fife went to a closet with Miss Goring and they stay there for a few minutes, then we see the girl trying to fix her dress. She tells this to Eloise, there is how she gets suspicious of Penelope. However, Penelope as LW never published a thing about this incident between lord Fife and Miss Goring, because it would be a scandal of big proportion for her and her family and very likely Lord Fife would be forced to married this girl. Also, we need to understand that she holds so much power with LW, because she does this by also using through something she likes but the ton too loves to talk about it (including the Bridgertons and Eloise like we saw right in one of the first scenes where they were dressing and all in group read lw) : gossip. Almost everything she writes is about what she hears people gossiping about in the ball rooms, how they are perceiving the situation of the events that are unfolding infront of them throughout the season, adding comments about it with facts, harsh truths, criticism, funny comments and helpful comments aswell when it is necessary. When she said, for example, that Daphne was ineligible it was because Anthony started to drive away all the men who went to the Bridgerton house, that let to men not going anymore to call on Daphne, which we can assume people started to talk about it on why the diamond that the queen chose didn't have suitors and started to speculate about it, and obviously it could never be because the fault of the men, no, the ton blamed on a woman, and so LW needed to write about it to not create any suspicion. When she speaks about the Bridgerton, obviously she may have a more intimate understanding what may happened because she has direct access to the house and even Eloise perhaps speaking about it of certain situations, but even Eloise didn't know what was happening between Anthony and Kate, for example, and so for the ton not having suspicious of why LW would write only good reviews of the Bridgerton she needs to write what she hears, what is her opinion on the matter and what they are speaking/gossiping about the scandals made by the Bridgerton themselves. But when it is necessary to intervene and try to help them out to dissuade the public opinion, she does without creating suspicious to the Bridgerton or herself. I also see people speaking about lw commenting about George's illness, and obviously, I don't agree it was wrong, but it was also accurate to the time period. George was literally known as the mad king, who his oldest son George IV was regent, that is why this time period is known as regency. Mental illness wasn't a thing that was spoken of. In the early 19th century, care for the mentally ill was almost non-existent. Mental illness was highly stigmatized, viewed as demonic possession or moral deviance, and “mad” people were believed to have no abilities to “reason” and needed to be “tamed”. So, it is no surprise that Penelope learned such a thing since birth that she would make such a comment when she heard society speaking about it. It wasn't out of evil intentions or shaming the king or queen. It was how it was viewed by everyone. And even, the parliament were trying to hid the situation, so people were must likely speculating what was happening to their king. Of course, we can argue that Bridgerton is everything but historically accurate and they could have change that, but it is how the writes proceeded to write, and even George called himself as "madman" too, even him couldn't understand it. And well, if I speak about Marina or Eloise situation, it would be another essay😂 (sorry about that, but I already saw others in the last video speaking about it). But basically, for me, all of them have reasons to act the way they did, and they had reasons to do what they did. All of them made mistakes and hurt people, but all was made by love, too. Who here can say that they didn't say or do something harsh in their life, perhaps you regret it or not, but it was out of desperation, wanting to help someone, or out of love? Perhaps the other person/people couldn't understand your feelings too or why you did it, and it was hard to explain, but you did it because of love, because you believe it was the correct thing to do even if for another perhaps believe it wasn't or find it unfair. Penelope wanted to save Eloise, Eloise is mad because Pen didn't told her it was her all along. Penelope wanted to save Colin, which she is friends with for years, for a loveless marriage. Regardless, Penelope, aka LW, isn't some monster irredeemable as some people say, but she is a human with flaws who can do wrongdoings and do good as well, for the people she loves. She needs to make amends/apologise to Eloise (if she let her speak and listen to her, that would be nice Eloise), but it isn't like Penelope did it out of pure evil either.

Featherington has 3 girls; that's 3 dowries. I think there's part of her that's subconsciously seeing Penelope up to be the spinster daughter who takes care of her once the older daughters marry and move out to run their own households. Penelope is bookish and smart, none of which is valued in this society, but these are great qualities to care for an aging mother.
@sorchamiana
@sorchamiana Месяц назад
And do you not think that is entirely unfair to Penelope?
@lenoraGrayce
@lenoraGrayce 2 месяца назад
I think Lady Featherington is cynical and very familiar with the cruel truths of the world. Just like in season one with Marina, she tells it how it is and doesn’t sugar coat anything. Her POV is that life is hard and even harder as a woman. Suck it up, accept it and find a way to put it to your advantage. I think she was just telling Penelope the hard life truths as she sees them. But I also think that she cannot think outside the box of society’s prescribed norms and see how her daughter can be exceptional outside of those confinements. She doesn’t offer Penelope hope or encouragement and that leads to Penelopes complete lack of self-confidence. Despite how horrible Porshe can be, I love her character! She is such a great foil to Violet Bridgerton who gives nothing BUT encouragement to her children, but she’s also a great advantage of a cunning woman who fights for her and her daughter’s survival despite society and huge personal obstacles. Plus, she’s just hilarious!

You bring up a good point about the Mondriches. I think this show has a problem (I don't know whether _problem_ is the right word) because it started out like an AU where there was no racism (but still plenty of classism and sexism and probably ableism) but then they had the explanation partway through season one for how high society integrated, which kind of derailed that a bit. Then that was expanded on in QC, of course. So this gave the show a bit of a split personality about how race affects things in society. I do wonder whether the extras were less varied when the Mondriches went to their first party. They've usually had a background characters of various colors, but, of course, the two main families are white and the family we follow the most of all is the Bridgertons. For the most part, the main show operates as if racism is solved while every other kind of oppression is in full swing. Simon was a sought-after marriage prospect, and the Mondriches may soon have to deal with people who try to court their acquaintance with an eye for when the young baron becomes marriage mart material. Lady Danbury throws the much-anticipated first ball of the season. The Queen is -- the Queen. But we know it isn't that long ago that society -- or at least high society -- was integrated. What is society like as a whole, then? And how does that affect Will and Alice, in addition to suddenly being upper class?

@@HuntingViolets I’m just going off the Queen’s words to Eloise in that carriage in season 2, “I will deploy my resources to crush you like a serpent”. @HuntingViolets
@HuntingViolets 2 месяца назад
@@babylicious345 Yes, she did say that, but that isn't all she said. Queen Charlotte: "You do realize the power you wield in *that pen of yours could be used for greater purposes than ridicule and gossip-mongering. Lady Whistledown could be a strategic ally to the Crown,* should she so please." (Eloise again attempts a denial.) "So, you would be my rival? Do you have any idea *what will happen once I reveal this secret of yours, child? People will seek their revenge.* However bad your family's situation seems to you now, it will only get worse. *I might be able to solve that problem. I shall give you three days to consider my proposal and come to your senses.* If you do not, then I will deploy my resources to crush you like a serpent. Pride may not be as precious to you as your breath." Those last two lines do seem threatening, but the Queen does like her hyperbole, and in context, there is more of a suggestion that the Queen will make sure she is revealed to the ton and let what happens happen. The Queen would probably not come out to reveal Lady Whistledown personally but would use other people to get the word out. YMMV
@babylicious345

@@HuntingViolets Eloise cannot go off of the Queen’s initial sentiment anymore (once Pandora’s box is opened it cannot close). The Queen may have wanted to form an alliance with LW, but by the end of that conversation, the Queen was no longer interested, and that is what Eloise (and the viewer must accept). You can no longer dwell on what “could’ve been”. The window for partnership was closed once the Queen started to feel like Eloise was insulting her intelligence. The last two lines were the shortest, but they were the last and left the impression that LW, whoever she was, may not make it out alive. I’m almost certain that in part two, Eloise will probably be one of the driving forces in trying to convince Penelope to drop LW all together because she is the only one who has actually seen the Queen’s anger concerning it. I also believe that that will be the bridge that reconnects them.

Its always strange to me when people are surprised that Lady Featherington said what she said but then I remember not everyone's family is like that. I identify with Penelope so much in that scene, it's sad. From personal experience, it hurts just as much as you fear it will when your hear all the negative things you think about yourself from someone whose opinion matters to you no matter how deeply you know they are toxic to you. When Lady Featherington changes tac/tone it makes me hopeful she's learning, maybe more nebulously than literally, the difference between tough love and abuse. If she can communicate that to Penelope at some point this season, I'd love it so much, as I'll never see it from my "but they're family" mother.

Hii :) i've found you guys because of your Ted Lasso reactions and I love it here. But while I used to agree you with on the Ted Lasso reactions, I think you guys are a bit off beat here about Penelope. Penelope is a knowledgeable young lady (probably around 19 here. it's her 3rd season and they usually debut around 17) with many interests, a very good writer but constantly ostracized or ignored... probably because of her appearance and family status. Lady Whistledown is so popular cause she's writing what everyone want to read. They're all gossipy in that kind of society. These people are too rich to work, gossiping is all they do. Cressida's arc is great, but she's been mean and a true bully for 2 seasons and you've been quite fast to forgive her. Penelope deserves at least that. At 18 last season, I believe Penelope truly thought she was protecting Eloise by outing her. Her dealings with Theo were very dangerous! She knew Eloise had the support to recover, but she had been gone further with Theo she'd be ruined. And Penelope is completely oblivious of her privilege as a middle child with no pressure to marry and being from a respectful family. And what Whistledown said about Colin looking like he changed personalities is not wrong or cruel at all, I'm sure many thought it and he didn't feel any repercussions from it at all (another side of male privilege too). Both of them used to be the two nerds and he's faking being cool, cause he's a 20 something year old trying to find himself too and discovering women. My theory is that Penelope nowadays would have been a real good writer but in those times she can't cause she's a woman. And her reading Colin's diary had nothing to do with Whistledown, it was a 19 year old in love and she's truly remorseful. And she could be judgy by him fooling around all around Europe for the second summer in a row (which would ruin a woman but doesn't ruin him!!) but instead she looked just surprised and probably touched to know they share that love for writing. How beautiful that they as a couple could share that love for books and writing? If she could write her own books as a female author, i'm sure she'd prefer that to being Lady Whistledown. just to end this (waaaay too long, i'm sorry) comment, how heartbreaking is it that Penelope really feels she's finished for society, so lost that she wants a kiss just not to die without knowing how it feels? She has no friends, no social status although she's probably one of the richest and financially independent women there and still doesn't feel like that gives her the power to get free from her family (she's conditioned to think only marriage will) and her family and society ridicule her. And if you pay attention, the most vicious she's been to anyone was herself in this episode. She, as Whistledown, was never has cruel to anyone as she was to herself here. She deserves our love. and yes, you probably already know, this is actualy Colin and Pen's season. :) Keep up the great reactions. :D

Your opinions are too strong and misguided towards a young girl who has been bullied by basically everyone around her except the Bridgerton family. The only reason she is successful is because the ton feeds off of gossip. She is making profit at a time when women were just tools of bearing children. And she is young. And in love with a guy she knows is out of her reach. And you are disgusted because she is reading the diary of the guy she has loved all her life. Identity also plays into Colin's and Eloise's stories. Eloise has been damaged by the events of last season and now tries to acquiesce more while still hiding. She turns down Colin's feminist book because she thinks there is no hope. She seems a bit depressed, despite her humorous remarks. I hope she will eventually take the book. I'm glad that you love Eloise. The livestream was so against her last night, and it made me sad. She is just as young as Penelope, and the only one besides Benedict who even questions privilege (which she has less of than he; he could have stayed in art school while the woman artist he met could only attend lectures by being a nude model, something I don't think is in Eloise to do -- she is more interested in writing than art, but just as an example) and she's supposed to invent intersectional feminism as a teen girl, somehow, even though the first time she puts a toe out of her class, she is punished for it. And she broke things with Theo because she was worried for him, not herself. /Sorry for the rant./ Yes, she was wrong to tell Cressida about the lessons, although I think she needed to talk to someone and she has Penelope's secrets pressing on her right now. I think you are the only reactors I've seen who didn't think Cressida turned around and told everyone. It's interesting to see what effect she and Eloise will have on each other. Francesca is a shy, internal character, and I can't tell you how amazing it is to see such a character get any focus. Lady Featherington made her daughters that way. Who was supposed to tell them about sex? According to her, she found a husband for Prudence, but doesn't lift a finger for Penelope? Which may be lucky for Penelope, I don't know.

Re: Francesca, I think the show is purposefully doing a slower unraveling of her personality here because this isn’t technically her season. In the books, there is a time jump to account for in Francesca’s storyline, and while the show will likely have to truncate that out of necessity, they still need to allow for some time passing before the focus entirely falls on her. In addition, there’s some overlap in time in Benedict and Eloise’s storylines with Francesca’s, so we will likely see a lot more play out with her as we move on to Benedict and Eloise’s storylines in the upcoming seasons. How much the show will change from the books with the three of their storylines remains to be seen, so that will be interesting to see play out

Penelope knows what the people want, that's how she makes her money and success. She knows people want to hear what Whistledown has to say about the situation so it wouldn't make sense to not mention it.

Many reviewers are pointing out that Francesca may be Aspberger's or at least neuro-divergent. Which kinda of comes out more in the next 2 episodes.

Does anybody think Kate and Anthony keep to their separate rooms? It was a big thing when Daphne wanted to move to her unused bedroom when she and Simon were on the outs.

I think it's one of those things to have in public, but in private the separate room turns into a glorified closet.

Yeah you're not the only one who thinks that about Francesca. Many people criticised her acting as flat and shared that 'Go girl, give us nothing' meme. Hopefully her character becomes well rounded till the last episode.

Her acting wasn’t flat. Francesca is completely different from her siblings.

@@HuntingViolets I've read all the books. Being an introvert or quiet doesn't mean you don't have a personality or any other interests. There's a reason people keep calling her autistic and we know she isn't autistic in the books. Which leads me to believe that the actress didn't know how to give a nuanced performance like so many other actors in the show give with little screentime.

When you look into the theory that Francesca is Autistic, it seems very plausible and adds depth to how she interacts with the world around her.

I dont think you guys have said so, b ut Francesca is portrayed as kind of neurodivergent, maybe sensory-sentive/autistic to some extent. The show is really big on inclusion, so I think if you looked at her scenes through that lense she seems less bland as it's very different to see someone like that as a sub-lead, soon to be major lead in a romance drama like this

Penelope is meant to be in her early to mid 20s in this season. In the books, the girls debut in society at the age of 18, but for the shows, they aged them up a couple of years as the actors are quite a bit older than 18. So for S1, Daphne was ~21; S2 had Anthony ~29 and Kate ~26 (Edwina ~21); S3 has Penelope ~24 and Colin ~26.

Girls were generally expected to marry in their first or second season (before the age of 23). This is why Kate and Penelope are considered "spinsters."
@HuntingViolets
@HuntingViolets 2 месяца назад
They said it was her third season, so I think it is meant to be a year to a season of the show (although the timeline doesn't always make sense with Kate and Anthony's long honeymoons), so I think she is about 20 or 21 now (she debuted a year early to join her sisters). Edwina said she was 17 last season.

I dont understand how u can feel bad for Cressida and not Penelope, Cressida is cruel to her core she always has been since season 1 with Daphne, she does it for fun. Penelope wrote what she did about Eloise to save her from potentially being unalived by the queen she couldn't have come clean otherwise she herself may have been unalived so exposing Eloise was the only way to save them both she had no ill intent in her heart. She exposed Marina to save Colin from being tricked into being father to kids that aren't his the only thing she was in the wrong a little for is Colin which she didn't even say anything that crazy and after what he said about Penelope he really deserved it. Penelope never does things with Mal intent only to save others Cressida is an actually mean person.
