I picked up a blown Briggs Intek 17.5 engine for $40. I figured I could rebuild it with the parts I had laying around, or just sell the parts to make a few bucks if it was not worth rebuilding. Disclaimer:

Great video, good info thanks. Well thought out and professional presentation. Anyone releasing pressure on big end Conrod bolts, crack them slightly and move across to other bolt and do same, and go back and forth till loose. Saves extreme strain at opposite side, on mating surfaces and the casting shell and bolt. Thanks for helping others with this video.

doublewide6 Repairs LLC. Looks it was ran low on oil.. I use mobil 1 seems to make it last longer..

I only use Mobile, Valvoline or NAPA store brand oil, the store brand is basically Valvoline with another additive (because it cannot be chemically identical to Trademarked Valvoline brand oil), Depends on the $ scene at the time of service NAPA brand carries the same engine guarantee as Valvoline. Yes you are Absolutely correct about the increase in longevity of the engine, I've always ran those oils in everything, and service at the regular intervals, and everything I own still runs perfectly.

The issue is the owners don't change the oil in them and then they blow them up because they're using dirty oil and they don't change the oil filters either

I noticed in your video that you have a Sonya Cruzan hook bracelet. I am a Cruzan myself. I live on st. Croix. I am also a mechanic. Good to see good people doing good things....keep it up. What are listed as on EBay? is it double wide also?

Awesome video! The one thing I was hoping to find out was what kind and size of head the connecting rod bolts have. I see you keep the intake manifolds attached to the carburetor and sell them as a unit. I never thought of that. I think I'll do a listing with variations. One variation will the the entire assembly (carburetor and manifolds), and the other variations will be the individual parts. If the entire assembly sells first I will be done with it. If one of the parts sells first I will dissamble the unit and try to sell the parts individually.

I found a little metal part on the bench that is the same size diameter where the valves slide in ! It’s looks like a battery for a watch !, flat on one side and slight dip on other side ! I hope you know what it is !! It’s the same engine as this and all I had off what the valves , Oil pan and camshaft ! Cheers 🍻

I was able to get the connecting rod bolts with a T-40 torx screw driver. It was a little loose, but it worked. My set is missing the next size up, which may have been the right one??? Another question. I have been stripping the electrical, carburetor, controls, shields, covers, flywheel, and fan off the engine and selling the short block. Would you say that it is more profitable to strip the short block down and sell the parts separately?

The governor drive gear / oil slinger, does this give much trouble, being made of plastic?? If it was to fail, would you have any warning before the engine seized up?

hi i have a question i just took my 17.5 briggs apart because of bad crank and i do not know how to put the counter balance connecting rods on I know the concave side goes inwards towards the connecting rod but the aluminum balance rods look different one has an oval area? or did i mix them up from the used crank i bought but i had a broken one

What's makes a 17.5 Briggs have to much compression and want let the starter turn it over with the sparkplug in it?

It ether needs the valves adjusted "easy" or a bad decompression on the cam which means you need tear the engine apart

I have a XRD 17.5 Briggs Intec engine that is full of gas. Do you know what the failure is that’s allowing fuel to get into the block?

Easiest fix is to put a inline fuel shut off line....your carb is overflowing into the engine oil line located on the bottom of carb...will cause all your gas to leak into engine....you can also disconnect that vacuum line on bottom of carb to prevent it from entering engine oil....gas in oil will cause engine failure .

These 17.5 hp briggs engines are notoriously unreliable. I had one come in today, revving sky high. The linkages are working correctly, so it seems that the internal governor is broken.

Hello and thank you for the information..I have a briggs and stratton 17.5 ohv which lost power but barley runs. I started to ajust the valves and noticed that the top exhaust valve barely moving compared to the bottom intake valve..could this be do to a bad camshaft? Any advice..thanks

Yes, your camshaft has a lobe that is worn out. I also have one that I had just taken apart for a customer. But this mower has more issues than a camshaft. The counterweight slaps loosely within the engine, so cheaper to get a new motor. Just pull the head on yours and replace the cam and gasket. Check out the rods though and make sure they are ok.

Cam lobe is worn down. New cam and tappets. As for the counterbalance, you can get new orbital links and check connecting rod crank clearance before you seal it up. New gasket set you need as well now.

I was given a mower with this engine and apparently the connecting rod gave up and ruined the block. so im looking for one that i can rebuild. ive been unable to locate one on ebay, so if anyone out there has one,please reachn out to me. I know this video is 9 yeaes old , But poor folks got poor ways
