Picked up this Try-Bilt Generator with a Briggs and Stratton 10 HP Engine. Was advertised as needing a rebuild. The top engine was disassembled and in a box. Will it run again?

This is just what is needed for partial rv backup. Operates the ac and stuff perfectly. ru-vid.comUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y is quieter than my rv generator. Only suggestion is that it needs a fuel shutoff valve. So it is easier to store.

And if you do leave it outside, cover it with a tarp and put a piece of wood on top. Drain the fuel. If someone had done that or just replaced that broken breather hose then all this would have been avoided.

Between you and " small engine mechanic " I've learned a lot and have repaired a few generators for friends and family, just run of the mill carburetor issues but it's still a good feeling to be able to get a machine running in time of need, so thanks for taking the time to show us how it's done

I'm impressed with the tools you always have on hand. Compression tester, compression leak tester, lapping tools, valve spring tool, temporary fuel tank, etc... and then you always seem to have an old part that can work with your project. In a future video, you need to give us a quick shot of your parts inventory. I'd love to see what's lurking on the back wall of your garage! LOL, after watching you work I always want to go out and tinker with something of mine, even if it doesn't need it!

I hate those rubber gas tank bushings! A while back I was doing a test run on my old Homelite 4400 generator, and as soon as I started it, gas began dripping right onto the back of the generator head from the dried out bushing. Luckily I noticed it right away and shut it down. Got a new bushing and valve from Amazon, and it's back up and running. That Troy-Bilt looks like it has the same engine and generator as my Briggs Wheelhouse 5550. I wonder how many models they used those parts in?
@jcondon1
@jcondon1 4 года назад
It is the same engine and power head as the Generac Wheelhouse (and many other brands). I like plastic tanks, but that bushing is a real fire hazard. Surprised manufacturers are allowed to do that.

I have to get this off this off my chest. I saw the same part on Ebay for $5.00 with the grommet and free shipping. It's probably made in China, but the OEM part probably is too so your'e paying $6.00 for the plastic bag it comes in. I've found that Ebay beats Amazon's pricing almost every-time and I don't have to pay extra to get "free" shipping. Okay I said it so I'll get off my soap box now. Great videos BTW!

Great fix. I had a similar 10hp Briggs snow engine on a snow blower with a bad compresson release on the cam shaft. Could not start it on the recoil starter, but could start it on the electric starter. Same terrible Nikki carburetor. Customer does not want to fix the cam shaft. Briggs has several updates on it. I told them no warrantee from me because it may burn out the electric starter. The blower cost about 2K new. Can't understand why they won't spend two hunderd to fix it. Thanks for great video's.

Most generators are have 10 or 15% more for starting wattage, you know, like 6500 running watts and 7500 starting watts. However, this one has 35% more, it's 8550 starting and 5550 running. Can someone please explain the difference? Why so much more? Are there ways to boost the starting watts higher? Or for that matter boost the RMS wattage higher?

i found that if rap the valves with a hammer a few times of a head that has been sitting that often the compression greatly improved.

Hate to bash on you, your doing great 👍👍 The trend to use Scotch bright pads on aluminum surfaces? They will put some aluminum filings into things like the gap between the cylinder wall and the rings pretty much unavoidable. I watched a few of your videos I actually like that you go through and torque things. I only ever torque really critical things like head bolts. But I must say when you didn't even clean those bolts and you shove them back in I had to cringe a little.

Back in the '70s, all the way up to the '90s, if you ask Briggs and Stratton what the compression is they would tell you that if there's enough compression to blow your thumb off the spark plug hole, it was enough. I never did like that answer.

Good luck James, an extra good head laying around. Hope gen works. Looks just like the one I have. same watts rating. also I bet there's a 91825GS part in there. it has the brushes and a small circuit board attached with 4 diodes and I bet a small blue part. this takes 7.5 volts a.c. off the stator and turns it to d.c. JUST b4 it goes to the brushes.

Gasoila is a salve-type product, used in sounding large fuel storage tanks. It is smeared on the end of the tape bobber, and when the tape measure is retrived, any water will show up bright reddish-purple, to indicate water presence. A small tube lasts years. You could put it on a wire, and inserted into the crankcase to check for water.....just another tool, for your arsenal..

I use a pressing liquid to install rubber parts on chainsaws. Stihl makes what is called a “pressing fluid” but I use a 30% solution of Dawn and water. I just spray the rubber part, like an anti vibration buffer it’s my liquid soap solution and press it in. I use the same solution to pressure test small engines for leaks. I make a new bottle when I need it, for pennies.

Sorry but I can't figure it out that when you examine a box of parts from a disassembled engine why did you interpret the rusty valve and spring as a water damage? It is clear that the exhaust valve spring is not rusted and there is no visible trace of rust inside the head where the intake valve spring was seated. This tells me that the intake valve spring was not rusted while installed in the head but after disassembly.

Good job. Having recovered more than a few flood (submerged) small engines, I caution on the assumption that full oil can be misleading. Water sits on the bottom, under oil that might look fine. Just got to the part where you discovered the chocolate milk after running it. I've got a couple of videos on my channel of some things I fixed after long term water in the crankcase. I drain, flush with charcoal lighter (not running it, just a few pulls on the rope). After that a good run with transmission fluid to get the rest of the moisture out and clean any remaining gunk out. After that, new oil and it's good to go. Living in a flood prone zone, I get a lot of experience fixing flood damage to various things. :/ Nice video. Great deal for $50. Running great, especially considering it's got a Niki carb. ;)

2 Questions- Can the Corrosion (White build-up) on the Generator itself cause problems ?? Do you clean the Generator and windings ? If So what do you use ??
@jcondon1
@jcondon1 4 года назад
Have not seen an issue with the white buildup. Also have not found a good way to clean that off. I do not clean the windings. They are coated and dust will not cause an issue. But sometime I do blow out with an air compressor if really bad. I do clean the rotor slip rings if the rotor resistance is high. High resistance can cause your AVR to fail or potentially burn out you DPE winding.

James I have a question for you. I am working on a 305cc briggs and stratton, which I replaced the camshaft. I found a bushing approximately 9/16 inside diameter on the floor of my shop. I replaced the oil seal and could not locate as to where it might go. Do you have an idea, according to the parts manual it is described as a bushing seal kit. Started generator and it runs great and there are no oil leaks. Any information Wiig be appreciated.
@jcondon1
@jcondon1 3 года назад
Its hard to say without knowing your engine model. A lot of Briggs engines use bushings instead of ball bearings to support the crankshaft where it exits the engine on the flywheel and pto sides. Would check the ID of the bearing and the diameter of the crankshaft. If it looks like it will fit, then maybe the bushing came out.

Another great video James, I'm really liking your channel! One little tip, if the head is off the engine and you haven't run it before, you can do a simple gas test to check the valves are sealing. With the spark plug fitted and tightened, turn the head upside down and pour some gas into the combustion chamber then look into the ports and see if any gas is leaking past the valves. It's not quite as thorough as a proper leakdown test but it would have shown up the bad valve on this engine and saved you the hassle of taking the head off again.

Most likely it is the connecting rod and crank shaft. Might be similar to what happened to this engine ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3knaCHKIOe0.html

Once, just once I would love for you to break character and say something like “boom goes the dynamite” when something goes right.

Nice job on the head cleaning!! If you can, look into your local machine shops in the area for vapor blasting/finishing of parts. It will get all the carbon and dirt off your parts. Or look into a sandblaster for yourself. It's a dull finish on the parts..but they'll be super-clean. Here's a friend on mine in PA that has put his vapor blasting business up on youtube, he's vapor blasting an engine head: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uBGDGNhz2dU.html

I use a drill press for removing /installing valves , a u shape welded onto a flat washer with a stang into the Chuck . It’s a lot safer and easier than using a valve compressor and a lot less searching for escaped parts

Just a suggestion next time you have a head off like this ,before putting it on pour some solvent , gas varsol ,carb cleaner , etc. down each of the ports and check for leaks at the valves . If it pours out you know you will have to repair it .
