FloridaBoy Survival Thanks man ! Wasnt getting the jet in center of bottom bowl cleaned. Also I didn’t have the spring you showed in bottom of bowl, but maybe it didn’t come with one ? Dunno, seems to run fine though
This video was what I was looking for. I have the same BS Storm Responder that will not run on the with the choke in the OPEN mode. Tried several carburetor cleaning solutions and no change. I assume the high speed jet is clogged and will follow your instruction to remove and clean the jets. Great video and to the point. Getting ready for hurricane Laurel.
Thanks for the video. I have an issue with my carburetor, I'm getting a fuel leak from the hole above the small inlet jet. On the side with the small hole and larger hole above it, it appears to be leaking from the larger hole. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Prepping for Milton. My generator has been in storage for six years and would not start. I was glad I found a video for my exact generator. 30 minutes and it was running. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
You, my friend, have saved the day. Same thing: bought 2004, ran 40 hours, sat covered in garage. Hurricane Ian hit us hard. Gen wouldn’t start. Did what you showed with zero problem. Cranked right up. Can’t thank you enough!!! Thank you for the detailed video and instruction. My food is saved, we have lights, fans and portable AC!!
Thank you for posting this video. I did exactly what you showed as far as cleaning the carb. It was clogged in that jet. The only hiccup was that I didn't get it assembled quite right the first time and had to repeat. As I took the bowl off, I was very careful but I never found any spring in my carb bowl. When I finally got it back together, it ran.
Thanks for the video, very well done. My wood chipper has the same carb and after watching this I fixed the clogged jet and now it's running again. Saved me a lot of time, take care.
Same here, tried to start the generator in preparation for Milton and it would not start. Watched this video and got it running. Didn't think I was going to be able to get the float bowl screws out but with brute force I eventually got them out. The o-ring gasket is not in the best condition but it is running. Thanks so much. This kept me from having to buy another generator.
@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival Just use non-ethanol gas versus the stuff from gas stations and that will always be best for small engines of any kind. That's all I use in my generator, mixed for gas trimmer and Stihl chainsaws, and Gravely zero turn mower.
Your video just saved my butt...im in Va that just got hammered by snow and power outage. It allowed me to clean my carb and get my generator running for heat...THANK YOU from up north!!!
I live in Louisiana and my generator would not start, and after watching your video , I decided to tackle the job of cleaning my carburator even though I am mechanically declined. I watched your video twice and followed it step by step. I cleaned the jet valve which was clogged , put it back together and it started on the first pull. The storm is supposed to hit our area Sunday and I wanted to be ready.
Brother you saved me a lots of money. Generator would not run at all. When I watched your video I did exactly what you said and my generator runs great. Thank you so much my man. Great help.
Big Thumbs up! Just survived the 2021 Texas deep freeze. Did not have water for most of a week, but thankfully my power stayed on. Good thing because my generator - just like yours in this video, would not start. After things warmed up, it would only run on full choke. Your video was spot on. I did not think I would be able to do a carb job until I found this video. Good content and good video quality. Just like yours, those two bowl screws were on with the "force of Thor" as you said. Vice grips were perfect solution. I was SO glad you mentioned 5/32" size to get the screws off that hold carb on. I did not have a 5/32 socket, but a 4mm socket was a perfect substitute (I keep a conversion chart handy for mm to fractions - 5/32 is 3.96875mm - sweet!). Overall saved me lots of time , effort and $$. Thanks.
Thanks for posting. Exact same generator and problem here. My carburetor was slightly different. Only had a single bolt in the bottom of the bowl. Internals were the same. Your video fixed the issue. Gave you a thumbs up
I have this exact same generator. It wouldn’t start during Hurricane Ian so I lost all my food & was miserable. I watched a bunch of other videos before I found this one. This was the only helpful one. Followed your instructions step be step & it started. Thank you!!!
THANK YOU! After Zeta took our power down and I realized the power company wasn’t going to get to us any time soon...I pulled out the generator that hasn’t been used in over 5 years. Of course it wouldn’t start and after trying all the simple things and almost giving up several times I found your video. Thanks to you our food isn’t spoiling and we have lights and power! Really appreciate it!
thanks for the easy to follow directions! we're waiting on a blizzard here in Mass and found the generator wouldn't start. After watching the video and cleaning the carburetor, it started right up. Here's hoping we won't need to use it!
I appreciate the help! On day 6 without power... Did a genny tune up last week and it still had to be slightly choked to run at all. I woke up on day two of no power and the muffler was glowing bright bright red! Cleaned out the carb as you showed and it saved my marriage! 😂
Thanks for the video! It saved me a trip to the small engine repair shop and didn’t cost me anything but my time! Off and on in a half hour and running like new!
This video was was the most informative, instructional and relevant video I could find ANYWHERE on the 'net for addressing the "it start's but won't stay running" problem. Lot's of posts questioning how to address this problem but none that answered it UNTIL THIS ONE. Many thanks. Saved me $150 repair bill at the local small engine repair shop.
Great video. My generator is 11 years old and I haven't used it for quite some time. I was able to bring it back to life after watching your video. I too was having a struggle getting the carburetor bowl screws out. I pulled out my impact driver and couldn't believe how easily they came out. Again, thanks for taking the time to shoot your video.
Thank you so much. I'm not mechanically inclined. Prepping for Irma and generator wouldn't start. While watching this step by step, it only took a few minutes. Generator works like a charm. You were a huge help!
This is a great video! You saved me $200. That is what I was quoted to replace my carburetor before the tech even looked at my generator to see if that was what was needed. So.......I watched your video, cleaned my carburetor in 20 minutes and it runs GREAT now. Thanks so much!
Thanks for this video!! This is my exact model and the step-by-step was super helpful. I have neglected my generator for over 2 years with no maintenance and tried to start it after all that time but no joy. You nailed it! The high speed jet was clogged. Put her back together and started on the first pull.
You are indeed THE MAN! I also live in FL and thought I'd better fire it up in case Dorian does hit here on the west coast. Since it started with a squirt of starting fluid then immediately stopped, I thought "clogged carb." Sure enough it was and your awesome instructions made it fairly easy. THANK YOU SIR!!!
I did everything in this video but complimented it by soaking the carb in mineral spirits for a while and then blew the jets with an air hose. Cranked on the first pull! Thank you so much!
Great video! Thanks. I have the same generator and it's 13 years old. It recently stopped working and this video is exactly what I needed. Easy to follow instruction and clear visuals. Fixed mine in less than 30 min.
Thank you for this detailed video! I'm getting ready for hurricane Irma and couldn't get my generator to run correctly. My wife and kids feel so much better knowing we have two working generators now!
Great video and an accurate and relaxed narrative. With lawn mowers, weedeaters, hedge trimmers etc. etc. its impossible to remember to drain all of them at the end of the season. Generators? I stupidly gassed mine up to be ready for a storm that never came two years ago. Ha. It wouldn't run when I checked it out and I did the cleaning that you so aptly posted here. I stumbled thru it best I could. I wish I had the luxury of this video when I did it. Best thing to do is to drain the gas out of the tank and run the engine until it sucks all the gas out of the carb bowl. Then use fresh gas when the generator needs to be used. I learned that a little bit of Sea Foam cleaner poured in the gas keeps the carb and fuel system clean. Thans for taking the time to post this great video.
FloridaBoy. I realize I am a lil late but this was just the video I was looking for. Bought mine the same time you spoke about and it always cranked on the 1st pull, every time. Had to move and put it in storage after draining the fuel and put a lil Stabil in it. 6 months later, got her out of lock-up and check all my small engines. She would not start. Found you after troubleshooting and troubleshooting. Watched this video 1st then we went step-by-step with ya. The only thin I found and noticed, after the 2 bolts holding it together like a MUTHER and I also used vise grips to remove. I put a piece of wire in the high-speed jet, my rubber piece came out and went bouncing somewhere. after 2 beers and searching, found it. Other be aware of this coming out. Cleaned it while it was out an yup, it was gunked up. Used a scribe and put it on the end and with easy firm pressure, reseated it. You and I reassembled the carb at your pace. After all said and done, it was time to pull the cord. 2 pulls and I'm m=back in business. This instructional video was well thought out and put together. You did a great job making this easy for any novice mechanical person. Have a great Navy day from Tennessee!
Thank you for posting this. I have a generator of this model line and it would not start after sitting unused for several years. With hurricane season underway, I followed your step by step instructions and the jets were completely clogged, exactly like you showed. I cleaned it all out following your instructions and it started on the very first pull. Thank you!
THANK YOU! You saved me. My Powermate 6250 wouldn't start. I took the carb bowl off to drain the old fuel and the spring popped out. I had no idea how or where he spring went in. After watching you I pulled the entire carb and found the jet gunked up. All cleaned up and running now.
good stuf! - I'm a novice at small engines & learned alot from your vid., This was the first time I had encountered those torx carb studs...I used a construction (wood) screw with the right torx head and clamped onto the screw with some vise grips...Worked like a charm....Thanks for sharing....
Great video! One of the only ones where you filmed every step and showed what you were doing. So many skip steps like the choke rod, where they go, big one small one etc. The whole process, nice! , GREAT job, thank you!!!
Great video! My Craftsman generator wouldn't fire, changed the spark plug, nothing. Followed your video step by step [I am a mechanical novice, at best] and it fired right up!!! With a winter storm on the horizon, we needed it to start. Thank you so much!
The BEST video for this carburetor. Excellent video definition. The only one I've seen that describes in detail the alignment of the parts and the only one that explains that darn spring. Great job and thanks.
Arrgh! The problem that kept my generator down during a power outage was a simple clogged little hole, seen in 8:07. This video was a huge help in getting the thing running again.
Thanks a million..... followed your directions and sure enough... it was super clogged.... we were freaking out while preparing for "Irma". Much appreciated!
Great video. My carburetor was really stuck to the motor, so I just removed the bowl. But I couldn't tell which way to put that plastic float piece back until I saw your video and you said that it only goes on one way, the little protruding part goes in the little notch! Gotcha! Thanks for the info.
FloridaBoy, I want to thank you. You helped me save my dad from spending over $700 for a new generator last night...if we could have found one. I watched your video, and sure enough, the screws for the bowl were cranked down so tight that I wasn't able to get them off. Thankfully, with the help of social media, we found a new friend and tinkerer nearby who helped us get it apart. No surprise, there was a lot of debris. The generator was up and running in a matter of minutes. So, I wanted to give you a big thanks and a big thumb up. I hope Irma passes you by with no issues. You deserve it.
Thanks FloridaBoy Survival. Just followed your video for both of my gens. Been riding storms out in South Florida since 1967. We Florida boys gotta stick together. She ain't what she used to be. You and yours be safe this hurricane season.
One of the best videos for this generator. Last time I used this generator was for Wilma. 2 days a go I pulled it out and it fired up! A lot of people don't drain fuel and run it dry before storage. I also used sea foam before it ran dry. This is great investment to have in Florida. Thanks for the video FloridaBoy!
Yep the best thing to do is shut the fuel off and run the carb dry when your storing it. Prevents the gas from turning into varnish and knastiness from the ethanol nowadays, that stuff attracts so much moisture out of the air its crazy. Gas out of pumps nowadays its even close to the same quality from about 20 years ago.
Thanks for making this video. You just saved me and my family. We've got hurricane Irma ready to hit and now I can rest easy knowing that my generator will work after the deviation.
Thank you Sir for the video. I was blessed this time. I'm in Houston and I didn't get no wind or water damage from Harvey. I have a Briggs & Stratton Storm responder 5500 8250 a little newer than yours. The video helped a lot. I hope you're safe and I will be praying for the state of Florida. God Bless
I have the same generator, purchased right after Katrina came barreling through here. The Nikki carb is finiky and does not tolerate ethanol gasoline at all, even with Stabil. I end up taking the carb apart every couple of years. It's needing to be half choked to smooth out and handle a load. That's my signal that it's time for a cleaning. Your generator looks brand new. Thanks for the video, and greetings from Louisiana!
@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival They have the Nikki cloned carburetor for about $15-$20 on Amazon. I’ve purchased three of them over the last couple of years just to have extras, and the Chinese clones work absolutely great, especially when you’re not in the mood to take it apart. My snapper with a 6.75 hp Briggs engine has a plastic carburetor, except for the bolts and the choke and throttle flaps. The choke and throttle shafts are plastic. Somehow my throttle shaft broke where it holds the flap and the flap sort of fell out and got stuck in the intake and it cause the engine to overrev for a few seconds until I shut it off. Whoever thought of this idea with the plastic carburetor needs to rethink that. That’s just as bad as the plastic camshaft!
Hi FloridaBoy! Just got the generator back together without the spring and it runs!! Thanks again for the helpful video! I plan to still get the spring at some point, just so it's back to factory specs, but now don't have to worry about storms. And you are correct, those screws holding the bowl are on tight. Messed the head up on one trying to get it off. Replaced them with 5mm coarse allen drive screws and split-lock washers. Thanks, James
Awesome! I am glad that it worked out for you. That spring is tough to keep track of but I do not think that it serves a critical function...more to give some additional pressure to the float bowl screws so they don't back out.
Perfect. This is a exactly what I needed. After watching I completed mine in about the length of your video. How to loosen the double screw was the key for me.
Great video describing the various points to clean on the carburetor as well as the full process for removing the carburetor. Overall an excellent video. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. My gen set would only run on choke the last time I needed it. It cleared up after a while but still had a miss once and awhile. Took my carb off and cleaned the junk out and it started on the first pull. Running smooth now. Yep, the screws must have loctite on them. I broke the tip on my screwdriver trying to loosen them. Vice grip tip worked great. My gasket swelled and I boiled it in water for a few mins and dried it in the sun and it shrunk enough to fit.
Perfect video, thanks for taking the time and all the little tricks! I have conceded to do this before every hurricane season. Too easy with video not to just do it automatically so it runs great. Mine started right up on first pull and now running like a champ on 1 year old gas.
@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival I was actually really excited to do this, I'd never taken a carb apart to clean it before. Worked out great! I look at it like insurance (I live in OH), better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I figure if I'm prepared for the worst, it probably won't happen. At this point my friends have used it more than I have. I lent it to a neighbor when the remnants of Hurricane Ike knocked out their power for over a week. "Knock on wood" ever since I ran lines from the generator into the house the power hasn't gone out for more than a couple of hours!
Thanks for this video! Usually just find the replacement carburetor on amazon and buy a new one because when I try to clean the old one it usually still doesn't work. This was such a clear video I was able to do the whole job in less than 15 minutes and it started on 2nd pull and didn't stall when I took the choke off. AWSOME!!😊
Thanks for the video, I have the same model, ran last year this year nothing. Figured the gas was old so drained and flushed but wouldn't run except on starting spray. So after spraying carb cleaner after removing the air filter still wouldn't run so without removing the carb, I dropped the bowl and the plastic float assembly had what looked like wet sawdust around and on the float and meter jets. I watched your video since I lost track of how the float went back on and saw the part about the "one-way" keyed part and spring. Luckily it went together without issues with the gasket and the spring stayed in place. Got it back together after changing the oil and it runs well. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! I have the same generator and live in the same state. You did an excellent job on this. I let my gas sit too long without running the jenny. After cleaning the orifice, it fired up on the second pull. Unbelievably, there was no crud in the bowl, but those screws were a sob to get off. Had to resort to vice grips.
THANK YOU SO FRICKEN MUCH!!! Hurricane Irma will be spanking us tomorrow night and I've got my generator fixed. Thanks to you. You are truly a lifesaver.
YOU, my brotha, are.... the real MVP. I'm in Deerfield Beach, if you're ever up this way, I owe you a beer. This is exactly what my generator (same as yours) needed. Only problem I ran into was that gasket expanded when it was exposed and it wouldn't fit back into place. I think some carb cleaner got on it and made it expand and lengthen. I boiled it and kinda got it to fit. Genny runs great now with just minor roughness/ sputter..barely noticeable. Should run like a dream once the new, properly seated gasket gets here. Thanks again.
I bought the same generator after the 2004 storms. Started it up and then ran the gas out. it has sat in the garage till now. Your video was just the ticket. And yes the bowl screws were a bear. In Tampa, waiting on Irma. Wife is thrilled taht we won't lose all of our food in the fridge. My mower guy said to use Sentry in the fuel
Love this video. Helped me pinpoint the problem. The was a big ole glob of gunk in it. Unfortunately, once I reassembled the carburetor, it was leaking around the bowl. The carb will have to come back off tomorrow AM and I’ll re seat the gasket and tighten things up. Too tired tonight!
Lol...this job can wear you out. Yeah you have to be careful not to damage the carb bowl gasket when you take it apart, but if you get that main jet cleaned out you will solve the problem.
@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival unfortunately one time in it's life mine developed a water issue and I said to myself this would be so much easier if there was simply a drain on this thing. Lol
Thanks Florida Boy! Been running my Ginny since Irma hit-7 days now. Was starting to miss real bad and getting very hot. Changed plug and air filter. Figured the carb needed cleaning, but was worried that if I tore into it I might make it not run at all! Your video and relaxing demeanor gave me confidence to give it a go. Glad to say she's running much smoother now and should get us through until FPL finally gets the power back up- looking like at least 4-5 more days. Thanks againMiami Dave
Great video, it clearly showed what needed to be done and it only took apx 25 minutes to disassemble, clean and put it all back together. I was surprised at how clean my carb was once I got it apart. We just suffered through a huge winter storm and lost power for 2 hours in 15degree temps as the winds outside reached hurricane strength. My generator sputtered twice during use but never fully stopped, and I suspected a dirty carb. After cleaning the carb, changing the plug and oil, it I now suspect it was probably stale gas. Still, it is good to know the carb is clean and ready to go with fresh gas (plus stab). Many thanks for your video. Joe, Halifax Canada
Small hurricane in the Bahamas right now, going to come up the east coast. I should have pulled out my gen a couple of weeks ago (have nothing else to do!). It always started on the first pull and I always "ran it dry", but not today. It only runs "kinda" on full choke. So thank you for this. I'm going to go do this cleaning right now.
Great video!! Pulled my generator out to prep for Dorian aaaannndddd, would not start. Did a quick search and came across your video. Cleaned the carb and started on the first pull. Thanks!!
@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival Funny enough, gave the carb a good cleaning and got the snowblower to run. One big problem though.....the fuel now leaked out of the carburetor. Opened it again and found that the gasket was out of shape. Ended up ordering a new Chinese carb from Amazon.
