How to clean, repair, service, and rebuild lawn mower carburetor on a 6.75 Quantum L-Head engine using Briggs & Stratton #498260 Carburetor Overhaul Kit. This carburettor is found on many older lawnmower brands like Craftsman, Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, Toro, Poulan Pro, Yard Machines, and others.
Briggs & Stratton rebuild kit no. 487260: amzn.to/3khpfhS
Tecumseh Carburetor tool no. 670377: amzn.to/3zh2y1h
Briggs Thick bowl gasket no. 796610: amzn.to/3nG34ns
Briggs Thin bowl gasket no. 693891: amzn.to/3hCbCrA
Blue thread locker: amzn.to/398XOjQ
Wireless Tachometer: amzn.to/3sHibiH
Rewind to review, or skip ahead:
00:00 I'm not Leo
00:36 Remove top shroud and air filter
02:32 Remove fuel lines
03:27 Remove carburettor
04:00 Drain old fuel and clean carb exterior
04:59 Disassemble carburetor
07:15 Clean carburetor internal parts
09:47 Remove old gaskets and O-rings
11:26 Replace all seals and gaskets
16:15 Replace needle seat and float needle
18:07 Adjust float height and main jet
19:38 Remove tank and recoil starter
21:30 Re-install carburetor and governor air vane
23:38 Re-install recoil starter shroud
25:35 Re-install oil dipstick and fuel tank
26:33 Re-install fuel lines and air filter
28:42 The money shot and RPM adjustment
The tools I like and use most often:
Magnetic spark plug socket set: amzn.to/3CzmpvO
Tachometer: amzn.to/3sHibiH
Vessel Megadora JIS screwdriver set: amzn.to/363RFqO
Channellock Bent Needle-nose pliers: amzn.to/3I5DbnA
Long 1/4 Quick-connect Torx Driver Bits: amzn.to/3HUNgnm
Spark Tester: amzn.to/3CxW2qi
OTC Leak-down Test Kit: amzn.to/3CyUhJn
Compression Tester: amzn.to/3IWd6sp
Wear your safety glasses, or you'll put your eye out. Try on some gloves. Take off that spark plug boot. Clean your room. Open the windows, those fumes are nasty. Just 'cause I do it, don't think it's the end all, be all solution. There's plenty more ideas out there, I can't take responsibility if you slice off a few fingers after watching my videos. And don't just pour that toxic stuff down the sewer or in the ditch, dispose of waste responsibly. Just be safe, OK?

I have an almost Identical engine on my mower and I recently just bought A new carb but as a technician I like to fix parts before replace them. I see all the parts you found from the mfg but do you search on their website or is there a place you download the complete parts and assembly documents?

@@Echo3_ I do have access to B&S documentation, but generally I go to some major parts house (partstree, jackssmallengines, repairclinic, etc.) to get diagrams for all manufacturers. From there I look for who has it in stock at the best price point/delivery option. I'm partial to partstree as they have live stock qty on their website. They've never steered my wrong before. Thanks for watching.

I have watched dozens of these carb rebuild videos and have been repairing my own equipment and vehicles for some 47 years now and this video gets an A+ for completeness. They may exist but I have yet to see a video that shows the removal of the throttle plate and choke plate AND the replacement of the small foam throttle plate and choke plate gaskets AS PART OF THE MAIN VIDEO. I have subscribed and gave a thumbs up!

Older video. But still not cost effective. A rebuild kit is just as expensive as an entirely new carburetor. Add in the cost to the "mechanic" to do it, and you could buy and entire new engine, lol. If doing it yourself, these older metal carbs can be rebuilt up to a certain point, but still easier and less expensive just to purchase a new carb. I will try to disassemble and clean etc, but if it looks too bad, I just buy a $10 carburetor.

I made a post about that here a few weeks ago: ru-vid.comUgkxOuYTVShaUZmzWo_luhVM_Hfy1rgTbxpG Without that Tecumseh tool, you can get the old seat out with a drywall screw. Don't go too deep and damage the sealing surface. And use the back side of a drill bit (I forget the exact size, just find one that fits in the recess with little wiggle room) to re-install the new seat. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!

Thanks so much for putting this together; I did a rebuild before on our old mower and it didn't go well, the mower went from starving for fuel to leaking gas like a sieve. I eventually got rid of it, then my stepdaughter bought a house - in the shed was yet another Quantum-powered mower with a junked-up carbuerator. Watching your video helped me figure out several places where I had gone wrong the first time that I had no clue about; certainly the instructions that come with the B&S kit are not nearly as helpful as what you have provided. This time I was successful, aside from zinging the choke return spring into the engine.

Starting this process tomorrow with the same motor. It's a 6.75 190cc on a Yard Machine 20" and about 10 years old. Has started first pull every Spring after sitting for the winter. Yesterday it just lost compression. It'll will start but then dies out after about 3-4 secs. Cleaned the spark plug and air filter and now it will run but just loping along at about 25% power. Going to take the carb apart and see what it looks like. Thanks for posting!

I have a 2010 Toro Recycler(identical mower)with the same engine that is referred to as Ready Start. It has an auto choke that is activated by air movement of the fins on the flywheel. When motor won’t start on the 1st or 2nd pull, the main jet in the bottom of the bowl is likely to be stopped up or the governor vane is not moving freely.

Thanks that was very interesting to me because I have a 6.75 Quantum on a Snapper purchased in 2004 that was fitted with a different version of this carb that doesn't have the choke, but has some sort of a purge bulb primer system. Has a history of being difficult to start and restart since it was new and I used to think about trying to revert to the choke carb but wouldn't know if it was feasible but it was nice to see what it looks like. I guess they made this change for emissions reasons....who knows.
@TheLawnmowerLady

Indeed, there are multiple versions of engines, carb, body combinations. Some due to manufacturing turnover. Once they develop a new/better product, they insert it into production without any fanfare. I appreciate you watching.

@@TheLawnmowerLady I just checked my Briggs & Stratton Flat Head service manual, which is very generalized, but I have the "LMS Flo-Jet" with fixed main jet, no adjustment needle for idle mixture, and no choke but what they call a "dry bulb primer system". They say it is non adjustable for low emissions. I guess when they stop working and can't be fixed they put out lower emissions in the landfill too lol. As an aside, when I brought this mower home from the store, it wouldn't start worth a damn and I eventually took off the flywheel and found the armature gap was super open on one end so it was not installed/adjusted properly at the factory.

Well done. very informative, and if there is anything to learn, it is, if yoy don't have everything you need, take it to someone who does. I was going to do mine, but my nephew, who has a small shop, has all the stuff needed. A suggestion: Don't be so hard on your brushes. If you look at your metal brush, you can see that the tines are all bent. It takes practice (and I still do it wrong) but work with only the tips of the bristles. Once you force it, you are actually working with most of the sides of the tines. Its like running your fingers through your hair with your knuckles.

Great video , The thicker bowl gasket in the Box kits usually go on the carbs from the E-Z start engines like yours there ......Only twice I had to use the thinner ones.....

Thanks for watching M. Cajun! That's good info to know. I just put the thicker ones on the carbs with the taller lip around the bowl. That said, I use far more of the thinner ones. Cheers!

Great channel, awesome video. Would you mind reviewing which (diameter, length, thread count) bolt goes where? I'd removed the plastic shroud held in with screws, then the fuel tank assembly. Then unbolted the metal top covering. After that I'd also removed the air filter and bolts holding the breather box to the carb. So yeah, I have this model in a few pieces and am missing a few bolts. Or have some in the wrong spot.😅
@TheLawnmowerLady
@TheLawnmowerLady 2 месяца назад
I would go to any major parts house (partstree, jackssmallengines, repairclinic, etc.) to look at the specific diagram for your engine model #. Should be stamped on a flat metal plate peeking out from under the plastic shroud, covering the muffler.

Lawnmower Lady - Love your videos, straight and to the point. I noticed its cheaper to buy a brand-new aftermarket Carburetor than buying the rebuild kit. In fact, they package an air filter, spark plug all the gaskets fuel filters etc for less than the rebuild kit. Curious what your thoughts are on the aftermarket Carburetors. Thanks!
@TheLawnmowerLady
@TheLawnmowerLady Год назад
I think those aftermarket kits have their place. I personally steer clear, I've seen too many reports of hit/miss quality. I can confirm the spark plugs are usually fit for the bin. I'm also of the mind to try and keep as much out of the landfill as possible. That often means clean and work with what I have, rather than replace. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
