I use a lot of white thread and when I need to wind a bobbin I do 4 or 5 at once. I keep them on a wooden chopstick. Chopsticks are wider at one end and they don't slip off if you pick up the stick. I keep it in a little pot I have tools in. Very handy.

Hi Becky. I just found your video while "grazing" in my new hobby tutorials pastures (just learning to sew and quilt at AGE 72.....YES IT'S TRUE) . Thank GOD for You Tube. You have some really great stuff to share. Here's a tip I picked up from a lady I often watch. She keeps her bobbin threads from unrolling by putting elastic baby pony-tail rings around the the bobbin thread when you put the bobbin back onto your "bobbin stick". Such a tangle saver. I think you can find these baby rings at Dollar Tree, 99cent stores, Walmart, Target, etc. As I am just a real newbie, I am going to use both yours and her ideas to save myself a lot of time and space. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your vids.

I did something similar a while back but I used a chunky-ish knitting needle as they already have knobs at one end! I did find a slight problem tho, when you come to use a bobbin do be careful...I accidentally dropped the knitting needle and bobbins flew in all directions!!! That was months ago and I still haven't found them all 😂

LOL, I have birds everywhere - inside and out! And a couple of geckos too. We used to go over the Texas/Mexico border a couple of times a year and I'd shop in the border towns on that side. We had such a good time and I used to purchase a lot of hanging birds and talavera pottery. I miss it so. But I have them hanging all over the place to remind me of those great happy times. :)

I have using the homemade dowel thing for quite some time. I started with chopsticks, but they are not all narrow. I also use small elastic hair bands to keep the bobbin threads from unraveling. Gosh you are a busy gal!!

Well, I have a very short attention span and get bored easily. That, and no kids at home, leaves me plenty of time to hop into the sewing room. I can get a lot done in just 20-30 minutes and then I leave it ready to start up the next time in my project boxes. I have a TON of them in my room! lol Once dinner dishes are done, I have about 30 mins to myself to work on projects. :)

I love the bobbin idea. Maybe you could paint the little knob on one end. The reason I suggest it is I had taken one of my sewing machines to be repaired because I couldn’t get it to sew properly. I tried everything, So I thought. I was so embarrassed but relieved when I found out that I had put the wrong bobbin in the machine.

I’ve had a frame like that. I liked it . Replace the ratchet and it will be fine.
@PowerToolsWithThread
@PowerToolsWithThread 5 лет назад
Thanks for the confidence in the frame. When we assembled it as directed and slid the tables into grooves on the rails, it was never square (went wonky at center) which isn't a huge deal if using a pantograph by hand or doing ruler work, where a person controls the machine. However, I use the Quilt Butler and it caused all kinds of problems with long dragging stitches where at times all 8 of the wheels on the lower carriage weren't touching the frame so the carriage didn't get the full memo of what the encoders were telling it to do. This was a serious problem on curves. It would go straight forward & backward no problem but a curve that required a push or pull to the right or left at the same time would wreak havoc. And always at the same spot on the frame...where all the wheels weren't touching. I took it apart and reassembled the frame (many times until I figured this out!) using the directions for the Phoenix frame that just lay the tables on the rails and it seemed to solve all the problems. The tables were torqueing the frame out of square.

Becky I use the same storage containers for my thread as you do. I got mine at JoAnn's. I label the ends of the container to let me know which type of thread is in them and on which side. Serger thread is in a bigger container. Currently I have 7 types of thread. Frankly I don't like thread hanging on the wall, too much dust gets in to your thread that way. Sorry but your friend did not invent that method of storing her bobbins on a stick it has been around forever. My mother used that method over 50 years ago. Personally I use a plastic bobbin container with a lid ( keeps dust out and tails contained). Can't wait to see what you make next.
@PowerToolsWithThread
@PowerToolsWithThread 5 лет назад
I may have gotten that one at Joann's...I really can't recall. Whenever I see them on sale (because they can be quite pricey) I will grab one. Labeling is a good idea. I have a 4 shelf unit that sits behind my left shoulder in the video that I picked up in Korea in the early 90's. I separate the thread by shelf for now.

Plastic tubing from Lowes or HD cut to fit the bobbins would eliminate the thread tails! Slice to fit and snip it open so it grips the bobbin! Life Saver!!

I have 2 singer machines I bought on HSNthe one came with metal bobbins. I have the gray professional one and I was using metal ones. He told me to use a certain size plastic ones, but I don't remember what size to use. You say they are simple, but I probably could not do them. I am trying to figure out what a simple one I could make that is quilt as you go. Thanks for sharing.
@PowerToolsWithThread
@PowerToolsWithThread 5 лет назад
That baby quilt I showed is PERFECT for a QAYG. You want a quilt that is one row after the other vs. pieced blocks. You could narrow the pattern down to about 15" and use different fabrics for any holiday as well in a table runner. You're not limited to baby quilts. Or make it twice as wide for a big picnic quilt. That's a lot of sewing but you could do that.

Hi Becky! Still enjoying your videos a lot! I know you did one on setting up files on the computer. I normally use an iPad for everything, but I bought a little laptop just to use for my Brother Innovis 2750d, SE 400, and my new scan and cut that is still in the box. I’ve scrolled thru the names on the videos, but just can’t find it. An you possibly point me in the right direction? Learning so much! Thanks, Pat, Myrtle Beach, SC

Question. I've asked several sewists this question. How old is too old to keep and use thread?
@PowerToolsWithThread
@PowerToolsWithThread 3 года назад
Great question! Threads will age at different rates based on their composition, how they are stored, etc. Threads that get sunlight will age faster than those that don't. Poly threads will last much longer than 100% cotton. If you can see obvious deterioration (fraying/fuzzing), then I wouldn't use it. I give mine the pull test. I put a length of it between my hands and pull to break it. If it breaks much easier than a brand new spool of the same thread type - as if it was rotten, then it will probably break in my machine as well and I'll get rid of it. If the strength of the thread feels the same (or no noticeable difference) as a new spool, then I'll keep it. That's my 2 cents. :-) Hope that helps!

Becky, have you thought about contacting Anita Goodesign for a free zipper bag pattern. They have several designs which come in multiple sizes and they also have great instructions. I bet they would donate one for your sew-along. Call and ask to speak with Taylor. Explain what you are doing and I’m sure he could direct you to the right person.
