The straw over the pin is probably the one I've been looking for. I Wish I Had a Heart button to say how much I love your ideas. You are crazy talented and I enjoy watching your videos so much.
Thank you so much for sharing. I have bought so many things to try to organize my threads, fabric, etc. My favorite idea is the one using the rubber bands. Brilliant!
I love, love, love watching these kinds of organisational videos. Took the day off sick from work today because I had a migraine up until about 11am from when I woke up at 8am. So starting noon been watching these kinds of videos. Only thing, my machine uses boat bobbins not the standard ones, so I'm not sure how practical this is for me. Still here with my coffee though :D
I have a few of the clear and plastic containers just like yours, and I laughed when I saw the golf tee's ...I use them too. I love your ideas for the donuts...thanks Laura for the great tips!
I have a couple of the round bobbin holders and they work great. I really like the idea of the cup in the middle. I also have tried the golf tee to put bobbins with the matching thread. Thanks once again for a great video.
Saw a Pinterest post using clear plastic tubing to keep the bobbin tails from unwinding. I'll be trying that. I enjoy seeing what other people are doing for it.
So crafty! Recently I purchased clips for bobbins and the piece that holds the bobbin and is placed within the matching thread spool. It really helps to keep threads that may be close in color separated. Your video has given me a great idea of what to give my daughter...she’s been busy making masks lately on the Bernina I gave her. Perhaps getting her several colors of thread and a sewing kit would top it off! 🤗
This is such a great comparison video for bobbin storage methods! Seeing the large Bernina bobbins with the clips is particularly useful. Not all thread topper bobbin holders work for them, so it was nice to see the comparisons, and see one actually used with the style that worked for it. AND I hadn't come across the JUMBO bobbin holder previously, so that is positively GLORIOUS! Thank you!!! =)
My absolute favorite method is to use a straw on a spool rack; this makes it easy to keep both items together and I don’t need to use 2 hands with placing thread on the rack, or removing the spools and/or bobbin from the rack. I also use silicone hose cut to width and slit to slide on the bobbin to keep the thread from coming unwound.
Been using those doughnuts for several years now, and I really, really LIKE them! I stack them one atop the other in one of my drawers. Nice and neat and easy to find the bobbin I am looking for, or an empty one! It beats the fruitcake tin my dear mother kept all her bobbins and bits in!
Lizzystitch484 that's so funny. I have my fruitcake tin full of sewing doodads. My 8-year-old granddaughter wishes she had one too. (Am teaching her to sew. Such fun.)
TOTALLY FAB THANKS! I like to have my bobbins w/my thread, I also like them in those little boxes, dust free, thread dust free, maybe I can use some of my deeper drawers. I like to be able to SEE everything, very neat and organized though.
Love the bobbin donut...I have them in different colors for different size bobbins...one for Pfaff bobbins, another for class 15 Bobbins, another for class 66 ones... they fit pretty well over a cone stand too.
The straw idea is genius and has come at the right time. I'm in the midst of organizing my sewing room so I can actually use it without fumbling all over (insert eye roll here).
Thank you, Laura! Love the plastic clothespin type one. That will make sure I'm never mismatching a black bobbin with navy thread. (It has been done before. LOL)
Thanks for a great info video :) I mostly use the tried and true bobbin box. Each of my machines uses a different bobbin, so boxes are marked with machine name and model. FW metal bobbins stay right in case with machine. Embroidery machines bobbins stay with them also. If I ever get them mixed up...no one in family can help lol.
great ideas, thanks for the info. But I have a warning... elastic bands will melt onto your spool of thread if stored in hot areas... like the top shelf of a closet, in Florida.
That's a good tip. Another one -> the rubber used in elastic bands will become brittle and snap in colder temps, like some parts of Canada. Honestly, I'm not the biggest elastic band fan.
Thank you for this video, it was very informative. I think I will try the small hair ties. I can pick those up at the dollar store. I have a question, when will you be doing a block of the month? I have 3 beautiful colars that i just bought, and would like to use them somehow. Happy Sewing!
I know this is almost a year old video but I want to say I like the donut setup with the glass in the middle because you can put another donut on top portion of the glass. Maybe there is something you use often in the glass and just attaching a donut at the top of the glass shouldn't interfere with getting to it. Since the bobbins fit snuggly in the donut you can turn the glass over to get to something inside without the bobbins falling out. I really like that.
I like the clips at 1:07 - is very convenient to keep the bobbin with the thread when you have a bazillion colours of Isacord embroidery thread! (Which shade of dark green is THIS one?)
Laura can you do a video on fabrics. What I mean is which fabric is for quilts, clothes, and bags. Also can you do a video on which needle is best for what project and what fabrics? Thank you.
I used hair rollers, 1 dollar from dollar tree store, the one that has some kind of velcro on it for your hair, I take the velcro off the rollers and slit the roller one side open and slip them around my thread to keep thread in from loose just like I did tube for bobbin.
If you use the doughnut, the bobbins are separate from the spools. Do you find it difficult to match a bobbin to its corresponding spool, or are you able to do it at a glance?
I use the Aurifil containers to hold the spool and bobbin. If both the thread spool and the bobbin do not fit I use one of the outside compartments and place the bobbin in the middle section. If you have two contrasting threads and bobbins, I use the the outside compartments and combine the bobbins in the middle row.
I had some plastic tubes that I got from hospital. They were brand new and they were going to catheter empty urine bag but it was never used, so I ask if I can have it. I cut several pieces wide enough even with the bobbin and slice it one side open and slip it around my bobbin so thread won't loosen out. It really keep thread in and you can see what color thread. Be careful with box knife as I accident cut myself once. The tubes were just right, not to soft or too stiff.
I hope you find hair rollers with velcro on it at dollar stores and for tubes, check with medical supply store if they have catheter tubes as it is correct size for bobbins.
I also recommend you ask your local florist for the flower nets. When flowers come into a shop, some of them have nets keeping the blooms closed. When the flowers are processed (trimmed, and net removed) most florists throw those nets out. Mine has a box under her table and saves them for me. When it's full, she calls me!!
