People can say whatever they want about Moffat as a show runner but the way he introduced and told River’s story was incredible. His monsters were terrifying and his stories had so much heart. Can’t wait for you to see her journey.
I've always thought Moffat is a great story guy and not a good showrunner. Everyone has their strength, and it's important to know what they are and have a team to balance them out. Moffat's ideas under Davies's showrun are always chef's kiss, but when he's put in charge of the entire thing I think a lot of the grounding elements necessary for a long run get drowned out by all of his ideas and creativity.
@@altinaykor364 i would ask you when is it ever NOT good, but my spoiler-senses are tingling, so I am going to ask you to say no more. Imo. There is no point when it is ever NOT good, so we will only disagree regardless.
"Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair, and the Doctor comes to call, everybody lives".
This is peak Doctor Who, and peak television. It stands on its own as great drama, but with the context of what comes before AND after, it enriches it even further.
Absolutely! I can't agree more. Just some of the most genius storytelling in television sc-fi drama and drama in general, ever produced anywhere. I love it so much. A gold star classic!
That ending is so heartbreaking... because even if the Doctor "saved" River, she is still stuck in that computer. The truth is that he didn't know her.... he didn't know that the computer and being stuck there might actually be more terrible fate to River in the end.
But being "stuck" in the computer is no different, in context, than being "stuck" in a physical body in the physical universe; that is, if in a physical body, she (anyone) would be subject to gradual aging and the limitations of physical world, but as a consciousness in the computer she can live for an indefinite period of time without physical/mental decay and can "go" anywhere she wants via the memory and information stored in the computer core and the Doctor Moon. (She can also relive any moments she wants, enjoying them as if for the first time, whenever she wants.) River and the others are in "heaven", so to speak. (The subtextual concept of the Vashta Nerada is that they are, symbolically, the "void" that separates the physical life from any potential existence afterwards -- in this case, the existence River and the others have in the "heaven" of the Library; we don't know what lies beyond the "void", but now she/the others *do*... and that's what that aspect of the story represents.) It's not sad or terrible at all -- River's in the best place one could possibly be in, in any credible relative terms... :)
@tideoftime I understand your insight, but that is just the feeling I got, especially later on. without giving any spoilers I can't really explain it here
@@tuuli4002 (If you mean in later seasons, we know that River still lives a happy existence in the Library for an indefinite future... with just the one bit of sadness due to >insert predictable spoiler here< making it somewhat bittersweet... but she's still "happy", otherwise.)
The Doctor didn't know her when he put her in the computer, that is correct. But the future Doctor who gave River the screwdriver with the integrated thing to preserve her consciousness so it could be uploaded, that Doctor did know her, and knew she would be alright with it.
You cannot imagine what it's like rewatching this episode after all the others. The screwdriver... Oh. And of course, SPOILERS, so I will not say a word :)
Welcome to the best section of Doctor Who, youve got a few more to go, this two parter and the next dozen episodes are some of the best in the entire series.
It's a stunning pair of episodes delivered on a fraction of the budget of a mainstream American TV show (the total cost of both parts was less than $2 million). The story of River is uncovered over many years and two further Doctors.
I once tried to watch doctor who in order of River Songs timeline (…ish), it was quite confusing but really showed me how amazing Alex Kingston (River Song) really is, how she managed to alter the way her character, everything her character does makes sense, the writing of River Song in doctor who is impeccable, trying to keep her character arc throughout all the series she appeared in certainly couldn’t have been easy
Even though the Doctor is a "hero", the moments that give me the biggest chills are almost always the "Fury of a Timelord" / "Timelord Imperious" style moments when his "inner darkness" shines through. "I AM THE DOCTOR & you are in the biggest library in history!. . . . . look me up." - so good! And so many other great acting moments.
Yaaaaaassssss!! You noticed one of my favourite quotes of all time: I’m the Doctor. And you’re in the biggest library in the universe. Look me up. Boom!
The end (?) of River Song, but only the beginning of the relationship. I feel really bad about Donna missing her "husband" because they were really good together, but she has many more adventures with the Doctor to enjoy. The Doctor doesn't save the day, River does, but he saves River so that counts for a lot. PS - Avid skier/snowboarder or fellow Utahn, Jay? I can only ski down the mountain on my butt, however, I love Park City in the summer, especially The Canyons.
I highly recommend watching these 2 episodes again after you finish season 9 so you can see it again with the context of River’s story and relationship with the Doctor. 10 times more emotion. Still my favourite episodes of the whole show
“Is alright Timelord Code for Really Not Alright At All?” “Why?” “Because I’m alright too.” Why is Donna the perfect companion for Ten? She doesn’t love him romantically, she’s just his mate and, in that moment, she empathises with him more than anyone else alive currently can.
How the hell after all this time could a scene like River Song’s STILL make me cry after all these years! I’d say why its going to be so much more emotional if you rewatch it somewhere down the line but… spoilers… 😉
Just wait til you get to the Christmas episode “The Husbands of River Song” one of my favorites and brings this episode full circle. I love the river song arc from beginning to end.
The Doctor, complete with new suit, takes River to see the Singing Towers on Darillium and even gives her a sonic screwdriver, and “jokingly” scans her with it.
This episode along with the rest of the season/specials are my absolute favorites still, years after. Hope you’ll upload them fast! It’s a wild insane ride
"I'm the Doctor and you're in the biggest library in the universe. Look me up" "Everybody Lives!" "You and me, time and space, you watch us RUN!" "Hello sweety" "Donna Noble has left the library, Donna Noble has been saved" "Hey who turned out the lights?" "I am what's left of Ms. Evangelista" "Spoilers" So many quotable lines from a single two-parter that, for me, is the greatest story in the entire franchise.
I’ve watched this two parter more than any other episode of Doctor Who. So, so, so good. Glad you liked it! Enjoying your reactions. Especially when you look directly at the camera. 😂
this is the season that got me hooked on Dr Who, I've seen lots of reactions to Dr Who and i think yours is the best, looking forward to watching you react to the rest of Who
20:37 RIP River Song. She now lives on in the library mainframe computer. Although it was the end for River Song. It was just the beginning for The Doctor.
What is fantastic about these episodes is how much is foreshadowing.... Put some time aside, and once you have reached the end of Season 9, and watched the Christmas Special.. come back and watch this again.... So much foreshadowing which makes the whole conclusion so much more heartbreaking
River Song... You've no doubt heard her mentioned a wee bit... And so should it be: she was SO brilliant in just two episodes... Wish we could have seen more. :( :/ Meanwhile: Donna remains feckin' brilliant! :D ;) :p (My favouritest (it should be a word!) New Who companion still!)
Absolutely brilliant 2-partner. There are many good episodes of who, some you've already seen and many to come. This one still stands at my #1 above them all. A perfectly told beautiful tragedy. "This means you always knew how I was going to die." oof, ouch, never fails to cinch my heart. Adore EVERYTHING about River, but my favorite scene has to be the 'Cause I'm alright too.' scene. It really cemented my love for Donna. No other companion has felt as deeply a great friend to the Doctor as Donna does for me. There's just something she gets, and a way she takes care of him that feels special.
Just to say that you have gotten a new subscriber - youtube suggested your previous reactionn (for Silence in the Library) and I am now hooked. :) (Another River Song fan here.) ETA: Forgot to point out (although others may have done so) that even the Donna's 'imaginary' children are saved. Which is just the loveliest detail.
The 'You can't rewrite history-not one line!' quote goes back to a First Doctor episode, 'The Aztecs'. It has been alluded to in New Who a couple of times, including the docudrama, 'An Adventure in Space and Time', which you will want to watch when you get to the 50th anniversary stuff after the 7th season.
Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of the indomitable River Song - one of the best, most well-written and well-performed character arcs in the entire history of Doctor Who. Strap yourself in, though - the ride has just started....and she knows her way around a strap.
I watched and rewatched these episodes over and over again and I just realized... why would the Vashta Nerada not attack until there's enough of them. The Doctor said himself that the only thing you can do against them is to run, so what causes the Vashta Nerada to hesitate? What hunts them?
Oh u thought this was the best story of the show? Just wait till the next one, and the one after that, and the one after that. 😩 Oh season 4... This second half does nothing but ✨ deliver ✨ with its stories
I am so glad you are reacting to DOCTOR WHO. This episode is quite possible one of the most important episodes for the next 10 + years. But as usual... NO SPOILERS........... Buckle up and ENJOY the ride............
Ugh 😢😢 this episode man. It gets me every time. Every. Gosh darnnn timmmee. Also- "...stuttering ass does end up seeing her but.." lmao you're at a complete loss for words after this one. I'd forgotten how much of a mind fuxk it is really was the first time.
It's at this point in filming of this season that David announced that he was leaving the show. So Series 5 was initially going to be with the 10th Doctor. Hence River asking about the Crash of the Byzantium from Series 5. It's a funky bit on continuity because of behind the scenes stuff going on.
To me the best part of the Doctor facing down the Vashta Nerada was that he was bluffing. He''d already said that the only thing to do against them was to "just run". But he knew as well that he'd built up this reputation for being unpredictable and for defeating great powers, and counted on the Library having at least something about it.
It looks like you're still part way through Matt Smith's run. I hope it's not too much of a spoiler (by now) to have you keep an eye out for Peter Capaldi and "The Husbands of River Song".
It's so surreal for the doctor, meeting his love, and not knowing her, and her context is basically like a whole life lived with him, but very quick he begins to understand why he loves her, and saves her. Very wibbly wobbly in such a touching way
