Alfie Boe might very well have been the finest lyric tenor in the operatic repertoire had he gone that avenue. A shame because there just aren't very many good ones out there right now, much less great ones. Closest example to Alfie Boe would be Mario Lanza who was recognized as genuine operatic vocal talent but his film career took him away from the stage save but a couple of exceptions.
Thanks for reminding me why I adore Alfie Boe. Like a lot of others, I prefer him doing classical, especially operatic... I just wish I could find a recording of him singing "Che gelida manina" in Italian.( I have a DVD of him as Rudolfo in La Boheme singing in English. Sorry, but translations just don't work - all the high and low notes are on the wrong vowels, ie low notes need high vowels, and vice versa).) Anyone know of one with Alfie singing in the language the composer intended?
