Bringing An Abandoned Gold Mine Back To Life: Part 1 of ?

This is a bit of a change from our normal fare of exploring abandoned mines. Sure, it is an abandoned gold mine, but I haven’t seen any content before on RU-vid about bringing an abandoned mine back to life for the purpose of thoroughly exploring it… That’s a step beyond just putting in a couple of hours to explore and document a mine!
Sometimes access to an abandoned mine can be restored with as little as a morning with some shovels and a group of friends. Other mines, such as this one, require a full-scale effort on an industrial scale. Therefore, I can promise you that this is virgin mine exploring ground! No other mine explorers have ever been able to get in to see what is in this mine.
As I mentioned in the video, this mine was first worked in the 1870s. There are periodic references to it in various reports after that, but the exact dates in which it was worked are not entirely clear until the 1920s/1930s when a full mill was constructed below the mine (I’ll hike down there and film that for a future video). In the 1950s, a forest fire destroyed the mill, the mine’s bunkhouse and even the mine itself as the fire burned the timber supports in the portal, causing a catastrophic collapse.
Following this stunning amount of destruction in one afternoon, the mine was abandoned until a crew in the 1990s took a shot at opening it up again. They were successful in opening the portal (the steel sets in the entrance were their work) and did some rehab work, but there are large parts of the mine that have not been accessed in almost a century.
We’re hoping to change that and to see what secrets this mine holds in the areas that have, so far, been out of reach!
There are three levels at this mine. The level seen in this video, we’re calling level three as it is the lowest (the highest level is level one). Level one and two are caved and will require work to open up. Of the two, level one seems the most promising for us to dig out and to get opened up.
There is also a raise farther back in the workings on level three that supposedly connects to level one and two. However, no one has been able to make it all of the way up the raise yet as it requires some rehab work to become passable. So, we do not yet know the conditions on the upper levels. There is a very faint amount of air flow revealed by ventilation tests, so it could lead somewhere interesting. As such, getting that raise rehabbed and getting level one opened up are a big priority.
I wish I could show you more of the interactions I have with the other miners and that they have with each other, but I am forced to self-censor fairly heavily or RU-vid would immediately yank the video down for offending practically everyone.

All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so I’d encourage you to adjust your settings to the highest quality if it is not done automatically.

Several kind viewers have asked about donating to help cover some of the many expenses associated with exploring and reopening these abandoned mines. Inspired by their generosity, I set up a Patreon account. So, if anyone would care to chip in, I’m under TVR Exploring on Patreon.
Thanks for watching!

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand - bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

Good luck! I grew up on a California property that had an old gold mine. Spent many hours digging, filling up ore cars, laying track, and shoring. It's a huge amount of work, and I have a lot of respect for those past miners.

In 07-09 I was doing mine rehab in WA srate, we dug out three collapses and got into the old stope area and put in new sets and ore chute. Found that much of vein was still left behind since in the 1890s to 1900 1-5 oz a ton was passed by. After doing many years of old mine exploring it was a real adventure to get in the muck and live the history I'd been looking at for years. Best two years of memories and hard work I ever had. We cut our own lumber so the smell underground was an amazing aroma. After completing the timbering work was like looking at art to me. Really makes you understand the past a little better and wonder if the miners had the feeling of a brother among miners like I had.

Now you will be saying ......and " Yeah your gonna get Wet " and you won't need a gym after mucking in there all day ....you should run lights along the haulage drift .....makes it easier .... you be careful with that Serpentine .....gotta asked....did you have assays done ....OPT ? and what type of milling operation do you got set up .....glad to see you got some experienced miners helping ya out ...again we are really impressed with what you got and keep the great vids coming sonny Jim

That's funny, just a couple of days ago I was thinking about how the freshly worked parts of a mine would smell like a lumber mill. I used to drive next to one on the way to work. They did custom ($$$) cabinets and milled all their wood onsite. It was awesome. Then I quit smoking and the smells blew my mind even more. Being in a confined space, as new houses breath, the smell must be the same. Much, much more intense. I love the idea for this. AND that you are doing it right. Definitely be looking out for these videos. But, people don't realize just how sloooow the process can be. It'll be interesting to see how you incorporate that. Even if it's a short, ten minute video, showing the slow advances forward would still be cool to watch. Plus, it's a little more $ to put back into the mine. Start ups always have unexpected money pits. Watching these videos is the least I can do to say, Thank You.

That's the most well built mine I've ever seen. You should try to collect that mountain water and sell it. It's probably cleaner than tap water. I think it would be fun to try this just for a couple of days. Looks like hard work.

With all of the expenses I hope it's more than a boat load, more like a mountain of gold. Just looking at all of the timber that he used in that hole is probably tens of thousands of dollars, I hope he has his own sawmill. Yet he still has to find the gold to pay for that colossal undertaking, if it's abandoned it's probably all worked out. I hate to sound negative here, but reality is looking them straight in the face.

@Brian Landers No, we do not have our own sawmill and, yes, the timber is costing us about $10k for every trailer load we bring up (the lagging and those 8x8s are not cheap). However, read the description below the video to see why it was abandoned... Also, the initial involvement here is to open it up to be explored. The finding of gold is secondary for now.

Cool that you've started this project, wishing you and your team luck and safety. That cribbing is intense you've basically got square sets in there! How did you choose this spot? Can you share the gold / ton ratios of ore samples in future videos? Thanks.
@TVRExploring
@TVRExploring 3 года назад
Thank you. Yes, the cribbing is intense (we call that section the "timber cave" or "timber cathedral" but it is better than the alternative!)... The samples have shown .7 to 3.5 opt. If you read the description below the video on why the mine was abandoned, it seemed a very promising site to explore since there was no time to remove equipment or artifacts. Plus, this area is loaded with history!

Oh holy hell am I jealous of you right now. We're stuck in a financial mess with one mine and evaluating another along with reactivating a mill one of my acquaintances has nearby. How do your guys like the DeWalt battery chainsaw? One of my clients has a mine with a 160' inclined shaft and the manway is in awful shape; we'll need to repair and replace much of the timbering before it's safe without a harness. Being able to cut timber down the hole would help loads.
@muleskinnermining8661
@muleskinnermining8661 3 года назад
The BEST electric chainsaw we used at the Original 16to1 Mine was a STHIL. That thing was fast cutting and the battery lasted quite a while. The drawback? Very expensive! Also, don't let a newb use it, they'll hit every nail and even the track! Ask me how I know.
@TVRExploring
@TVRExploring 3 года назад
Milling will definitely be an issue in the future as I am skeptical that California will be accommodating in this regard. I have two Stihl chainsaws that I use on the family property and I am definitely a fan. That said, the DeWalt has performed like a champ in the worst possible conditions underground (as long as the blade is sharp). We cut the timbers as precisely as we can outside, but there is always fine tuning needed once things are being placed underground.

This is awesome!! I hope to see a lot more of these videos in the future.😍😍 Even though the abandoned mines are cool, a current operational mine is just, if not more interesting to watch. It sucks that you have to actually get inspections and MSHA involved but hopefully you can keep them off your back most of the time. ⛏⚒

After watching a ton of mine exploration videos from you and others, I've always wondered what it would be like to see all the timbering being installed and the massive efforts that would require! If it's possible to show more of that whole process of how the calculations are made for cutting the lumber, the cutting, transportation of the timber into the mine and it's installation I would love to see that. The word amazing is way overused today. What you are doing here is truly *amazing*! Thank you for sharing this project!
