MUCH OF OLD EASTON WAS SWEPT AWAY FOR REDEVELOPMENT IN THE 1960s AND 1970s. THE PICTURES IN THIS VIDEO ARE MAINLY OF PROPERTIES IN THE EASTON ROAD, STAPLETON ROAD AND TWINNELL ROAD AREA THAT WERE DEMOLISHED FOR THE SCHEME. PUBS, SHOPS AND HOUSES TOGETHER WITH THE CLOSE KNIT COMMUNITY DISSAPEARED AND WERE REPLACED BY MULTI-STOREY FLATS AND TOWN HOUSES.

Lovely collection of old photos. A lot of pics of Redfield/Lawrence Hill there, but I guess the whole area can be called "Easton". I lived there in the 80s/90s. We used to call the Victorian housing section, from St Marks Church up to Eastville Park as "Upper Easton", and the Lawrence Hill section, past the railway line, as "Lower Easton". Simply because of the geography!

My granddad leslie nancekivell owned eastville motors, station motors, tudor motors and fouway motors all around the area of the railway arch Stapleton road always wanted to see if anyone had pictures.

With so much development space available, you have to ask why were good houses demolished and why was a close knit community fractured. People on a street see each other and keep in touch - those in high rises only chance upon their neighbour if encountered at the entrance or on a floor,in a lift.

Hello there - thank you so much for uploading these photographs - they are a treasure trove! I've made many visits to Bristol Archives (r.e. family history) but have not come across any photos for this area. I am unfamiliar with the area so was wondering if any of the photos you uploaded include Seymour Road (off of Stapleton Road)? As I'm sure you know, the effects of both WW2 and post-war council development have swept away everything in that vicinity. Many thanks again!

Back in the 1960s I worked in the Housing Department as Clearance Officer when unfit houses were purchased by agreement, typically £350, rather than by CPOs, but one rare exception was the site of 88 Twinnell Road for which no owner could be found - it had been demolished in error.

I vaguely remember living on Twinnell road and dad was bought out by CPO and given a council house on Beaufort Street and later Seymour rd when that was to be demolished. I did a newspaper round that covered as far as Barton hill flats, up in the lift and down the stairs, 14 bloody flights! Knew Easton like the back of my hand, happy days back then, but it took a hell of a beating during the war, before my time and it was still fresh in the memories of the neighbours and as kids we refered to the waste ground's as "bomb site's" not really understanding the wide spread deviation that had taken place the decade before. I remember many of the businesses and the Tippett family had a small general store on Stapleton rd opposite Busses fruit shop (those buggers ran over my big sister when she was 7, she's still about thank God, but we never bought a thing from them 😡) 👍👍👍

Now Staple Road and whole Easton is a dump. I have just passed by this morning and the area is out of control, drugs, rubbish, homeless, furniture everywhere. Unfortunately this is goong to other parts of the city. Bristol used to be nice, not anymore

I used to play on the bomb sites of Easton in the early 60,s and left in 1980. There was a good community then and it wasn't over crowded and relatively safe. There was drugs and prostitution and of course the riot in Paul's but in the main it was small scale. Unfortunately things do look like they have declined despite all the businesses that are open. Theft is definitely on the rise but that's reflective in most areas now. Nobody wants to clean up now, it's probably not safe and waste costs to dispose of 🤷 Bristol is one of the best cities in the UK if you got money. But for the majority it's very expensive and if anything now over populated with people that don't make the effort to be open and friendly.

Great pictures. Both sides of my family are born and bred in Bristol. I was brought up there but moved away when I got married. My dads family all lived in Phipps Street, Im not sure if that was Ashton Gate or Bedminster before the war. Phipps Street was later destroyed I would love to see an image of it. Also of The Old Police Station, Winterbourne, where we lived when I was born. Any guidance where I could find an old image would be most welcome. Thank you. Kathryn
