THIS VIDEO TAKES US ON A JOURNEY IN TIME ALONG WHITEHALL ROAD AND THE COMMUNITY AROUND IT. IN 1962 MY FAMILY MOVED FROM PARK ESTATE, CADBURY HEATH TO GEORGE STREET. MY MUM TOLD ME WE WERE MOVING TO WHITEHALL. I THOUGHT THAT WE WERE GOING TO LONDON. IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN WHITEHALL TURNED OUT TO BE IN BRISTOL. WE LEFT OUR MODERN COUNCIL HOUSE AND SEMI-RURAL SURROUNDINGS OF CADBURY HEATH FOR THE VICTORIAN TERRACED STREETS OF EAST BRISTOL. MY BRAND NEW MODERN STEEL AND GLASS PARKWALL SCHOOL WAS SWAPPED FOR THE ANCIENT STONE BUILT WHITEHALL SCHOOL. NEVERTHELESS I SOON FITTED IN AND FOR THE NEXT 23 YEARS GEORGE STREET WAS MY HOME. OUR OFFICIAL ADDRESS WAS REDFIELD, BUT WHERE REDFIELD ENDED AND WHITEHALL BEGAN IS ALWAYS OPEN FOR CONJECTURE. THANKS TO ANDY JONES AND BARTON HILL HISTORY GROUP FOR SOME OF THE IMAGES IN THIS VIDEO. And at 9:31 the Old Georgian, clubhouse and drinking den, on Packer's Field. The West Indian cricket team used to practise on the field, and in the 80s, an American football team called the Bristol Packers, presumably named after the field!

6:27 Gawd, the Red Lion! Who remembers the quiz nights back in the 80s, with the local Liberal party team in one bar and the Labour party in the other? Friendly rivalry, not like politics today. 😂

At 2:44 the big house with that long high wall, also seen in the next 2 photos, is still there. For many years it was a Barnardos home. But back in the early 70s it was Erin Pizzey's Bristol refuge for battered wives, used as an overflow house when her Chiswick house and squats were full.

I have one of a VE DAY street celebration with a whole street sitting outside. This is Barton hill. My grandmother is on it. Maybe Aitken or Henry St. Also one of a staff outing from Thomas soapworks with my grandfather on it. They might be worth adding .I could try to scan them in and email to you. Mari

Some lovely memories there Dave and one of our class photos with Mr.Smith. We moved opposite Thurston's Barton in 1958 due to slum clearance in Barton Hill, still remember that day well !
