I don't know why anyone would say the US doesn't have fresh fruits and vegetables when we literally grow them here and farm them.
@byMidnyt
@byMidnyt 2 месяца назад
there are food deserts in the USA where those who cannot afford cars cannot just walk into a grocery store or walmart and get fresh food. much like the person in the video was describing a small n nearby store with no produce. if you've grown up in a relativity populated area or your family has always had access to vehicles, this won't make sense to you. food deserts can also exist in inner city areas also, where the bodega is your primary store.

@@byMidnyt I've seen it... where I live, you can throw a rock and hit a grocery store with a produce section. A lot are Dollar Generals, but here only the smallest ones don't have at least a small section of produce. Recently I was on work travel to Maryland and DC, with a decent driving commute between my hotel and where I was taking a course. I had the DAMNDEST time finding ANY grocery stores... had to literally research online to find the two "local" ones hidden away in a shopping center several miles from the hotel, and there was just nothing along the way except for an Amazon thing that I walked in and out of because at that point I'd never seen the "automated" swipe and grab model.

@byMidnyt I will assume those places are either in the deep south or the great plains? I've been all over the country, and the only place I see what you say being true is there. Even in the bayou areas there is a supermarket... beyond that 90% of rural places have local farm stands. You are making some kind of excuse I feel.

It is not Americans telling you that our supermarkets and grocery stores do not have fruits and vegetables. It is foreigners coming here thinking that gas stations and convenience stores are grocery stores telling you this. Edit: Also Walmart is a Supermarket, Only around 25% of the store is grocery. A real grocery store will have more.

We like our options. The funny thing is, Walmart’s grocery section is actually subpar compared to a real supermarket. It’s only a quarter of the store. But it’s convenient because they’re a department store too, and you can get your oil changed. Oh, and some of us drink our coffee black.

And you should see the Kroger Marketplace stores. They're still pretty rare, but they're huge - about 100,000 - 130,000 square feet, about 3/4 of the size of a Walmart. Big enough that they have a selection of general goods (mostly cooking/food related items, like stand mixers, cookware, plates, etc and a small clothes section) in addition to a very good selection of all the normal stuff regular Krogers carry.

I’ve actually seen gaggles of British teenagers at a Walmart for their first time. At first I didn’t know what was happening because they kept running up and down the aisles shouting about how many different flavors there were of some items. Took me a while to realize they were here on holiday. Rather than being annoyed, I couldn’t help but be enchanted by how sweet and charming they were. It really was a delight to see them in our supermarket.

Value in the removal of cardboard to contain the plastic bag that keeps the cereal. Biggest problem with most cereal is that it is not good as a stand alone breakfast. Used to be the cereal commercials would show a small bowl of cereal with milk, a glass of orange juice, and a side of two eggs (oftentimes sunny side up) as being the components of a balanced breakfast.

Potatoe Salad - Boil the potatoes not to the mashing level. Cut them up in small chewable pieces, add mayonnaise, pickle relish and then depending on how you like your potato salad, add chopped up boiled eggs, mustard, a little vinegar, chopped up celery, chopped onion, spices you like. There are so many ways to make potato salad, just really depends what way you grew up with. They look like mash potatoes in the video because once you combine everything and stir it, the potatoes kind of get mashed.

My friend came from India in 1970 at 16 years old. When his foster family was driving him from the airport to their home, they stopped at Albertsons Supermarket (pre-Walmart). He said that when he walked in, he saw more food than he ever imagined existed in the whole world. Then he hyperventilated and passed out. When he woke up, they finished shopping and on the drive home they stopped at three more stores just to show him that the Albertsons were not a fluke. At that moment he decided he wanted to stay in the U.S. and become an American. He did.

I can understand how your friend must have felt going into an American supermarket for the first time and seeing such abundance. I'm British and spent 2 years living/working in Syria in the late 80s. No supermarkets at all, just occasional small convenience stores for the basics with very little variety, and separate butcher shops, fruit and vegetable shacks, pharmacy, etc. When I returned to the UK I remember going into a supermarket for the first time in 2 years and was overwhelmed with the variety of stock and the bright colours. At first I walked around in awe as I had forgotten how privileged we are in western countries, eyes like saucers touching everything, and thought it was great, but to be honest, I very quickly actually thought it was obscene, to see an aisle of just breakfast cereal; an entire double-sided aisle of sugary breakfast cereal. This was way back in 1990, and supermarkets are far far more abundant today. No wonder we are all so fat and lazy (I'm speaking specifically of myself here, but I know I'm not alone!). So I can fully appreciate how your Indian friend must have been blown away upon his first sight of everything you can ever hope to find all under one roof, and in such abundance. Can you even imagine how someone from a tiny village in a third world country would feel walking into a huge western supermarket today!!! I even feel embarrassed right now because I'm remembering being really annoyed just after lockdown when I went into my local supermarket and couldn't find a pack of the red lentils I needed, and I actually complained to the manager about him not having any in stock. God help us if we were ever put into a situation where food became scarce ...........

And we here in west coast had Fred Meyers 'One stop shopping centers" for literally almost a century with the same kinds of selection and variety.....Now it's still there, but is krogers, and they've phased to most local and name brand products in favor of their own in house stuff. When's the last time you saw a box of banquet fried chicken? Not a bag of chicken nuggets, not a tv dinner, but a box of fried chicken? Then once Kroger brand stuff marginalized it to the point banquet pulled it from shelves due to not making money, they stopped selling their alternative, leaving us with nothing but nasty ass deli chicken and previously mentioned tv dinners and nuggets. On the plus side, it forced me to learn to make fried chicken worth eating at home. Which also woke me up to how garbage KFC and Popeye's has really become, lol.

Potato salad is NOT mashed potato. You cut up potatoes and boil til just soft enough to stick a fork in, not so soft they fall apart or become mush. Drain and rinse under cool water to stop them cooking. Then add what you like. Some standard things to add are: chopped up hard boiled egg, red onion, celery, mustard and or mayo, salt n pepper, splash of cider vinegar. You can add other things too like crumbled bacon or chopped ham, fresh dill, Chopped sweet pickles or pickle relish, paprika... Basically it should be a little sweet and a little tangy, and many people have a personal preference for what optional items they add.

There are more versions of potato salad in the United States than we're in that bread aisle of bread
@TheLordVyper
@TheLordVyper 7 дней назад
Don’t know about other countries, but in the US, we have the price of the item usually in either yellow or white and then the price per unit, whether that’s ounces, pounds, individual item. In orange to the side. So the item may cost 2.49, up so you can shop for value if you want it will also say 49cent per unit next to it. Potatoe salad is neither salad nor mashed potatoes. It’s chunks of potatoes in mayonnaise with onions and celery and other chosen assorted things.

For you international people: Walmart is the cheapest grocery store in the USA. The clientele is the worst dressed people. For the best looking customers you have to go to high end stores like Whole Foods. The same bag of corn chips can cost 1 dollar more at Safeway or 2 dollars more at a high end store.

For your questions: 1. We have cereal in bags because those are the cheaper knock-off varieties of the more popular brands 2. We have so many varieties of bread because we just have that many different bread companies 3. A Slim Jim is a highly processed thin sausage. Now those Super Walmarts have everything from home goods, to automotive departments, sports centers, pet food, clothing and, of course, grocery stores. We also have Targets, and Meijer's that do roughly the same thing. Now if you want to see a grocery store that's the size of a Walmart that's just pure food, there's a chain called Woodman's that's located primarily in Wisconsin.

I'm an American, but I lived overseas in Japan and Ireland for quite a few years. In your video here at around 6:00, she mentioned feeling overwhelmed and not knowing what to pick. When we returned to the US after being gone for so long, the first time I went to buy shampoo in the States, I stood in the aisle and almost cried because I had that same overwhelmed feeling. I was used to Tesco, you know...you just go and there are like 10 different ones and choosing is easy. In the US, there is an entire aisle of nothing but shampoo. So many different brands and scents and prices and choices. It was overwhelming to me and I grew up there! It is an embarrassment of riches and a tremendous surplus of variety and choice.

And to think, in the city I'm from, there are grocery stores like this spaced out every couple miles or so and sometimes competing ones next to each other.... and there are at least 25 cities bigger than mine and another 20 or 30 the same size. When I was in St. Petersberg a Russian told me a joke: A man takes the early train into Moscow to buy some meat. (Russians get that there's no meat in the country.) He runs from the train station to the market to get there early. He runs into a store and asks the clerk, "Is this the store that has no meat?" "No," says the clerk. "This is the store that has no fish. The store that has no meat is across the street." Another one: The Commissar visits a collective farm and confronts the manager. "How was the harvest this year, comrade?" "It was great," replies the manager. "How great?" asks the Commissar. "We had so much wheat if you piled it up it would tickle god's beard," assures the manage. "Wait, there is no god," says the Commissar. "That's alright," says the manager. "There is no wheat either." A few comments. The typical Walmart Super Center is 178,000 square feet. You will find these sections: Grocery. Bakery. Fresh meats and dairy. Fresh fruits and veg. Frozen everything. Clothing. Shoes. Pharmacy. Health and beauty. Crafts. Stationery. Tools. Automotive. Toys. Books. Garden. Seasonal/holiday. Pretty much anything you would want or need. In my potato salad, I peel and cube the potatoes and boil till tender. Drain. Add chopped hard boiled eggs, pickle relish or chopped pickle. Chopped onion. Mayonnaise and a bit of yellow mustard-not the powder. Another recipe calls for chopped celery, bacon bits and Parmesan cheese. Some people make this salad like mashed potatoes. I prefer chunky.

Many people add pickles, or relish, onions, diced radishes, many add-on's to choose from. Love it !! Mostly a summer dish. Then there is German potato salad served warm. Good for winter time. Homemade is always better than store bought - they tend to put too much mayo in it. People with large families buy the huge bags of cereal. Take them home & put it in Large plastic cereal bins for easy access. Slim Jim's are smoked sausage, a bit too greasy for my taste but they are very popular & taste good.

@@loriannrichardson7644 Still watching the video, but you make it sound like she never hit the spices aisle. I'm in the Southwest; no grocery store is competent without hot peppers, both dried (ground and whole) as well as fresh. Other than that, I'm pretty sure "American" food lost its historical character during the world wars, which was when and why we transitioned to so much dry-preserved and chemically-treated food from the grocery store as a culture and then got addicted since it's basically producing gut-alcohol. The channel Tasting History did a neat episode on the history of Chef Boyardee dinners that really made the lasting impact and breadth of scope of 20th-century war-rationing had on us apparent to me; as well as (peripherally) the freakin war research, during and decades afterward, such as the induction of over 1,600 disgruntled and likely still hostile German researchers into our own higher-research institutes-such as health and agriculture. So, it's practically NO WONDER American culture has been largely just about street drugs, pharmaceuticals, and chemicalized & GMO agriculture, and foodstuffs SO extensively processed that they're practically plastics, as well as supposedly-inert fillers, texturizers, and pigments that never even were food at all, ever since... 🤐🤬 Another major change was the creation of the Federal Department of Education in 1980 that ultimately did two CRIPPLING things related to food: took kids out of their parents' care, where we WOULD have otherwise learned more continuity of our family recipes that had carried us up to that point, and then systematically eliminated culinary education as a primary subject by blacklisting it as misogyny; which had the combined effect of making generations DEPENDENT on restaurants for prepared, hot food, and not simply because we have busy lifestyles. They also make the paper towels. They supply to the whole US Southwest. They run the plant 24/7 and every day but Christmas. They never were out of any of the paper that they warehouse. Their plant was never shut down during the whole government shutdown scam. Side note, they were one of the few customers I had that required the ridiculous face masks which you could tell did nothing because the paper fiber still managed to get in behind it. Americans have been chastized for not eating enough fresh produce, but every supermarket has a great selection of such. She was refering to a Subway sandwich shop in the entry area. Some Walmarts have McDonald's as well. You can buy bed mattresses and sofas and other basic furniture, at most Walmarts. Camping gear, sewing machines, art supplies, clothes, basic kitchen aplliances, bicycles, computers, smart phones, clothes, toys, pet stuff, jewelry, school supplies, plants for the outside gardens, outdoor furniture, household cleaning supplies, small auto parts including batteries, tires, detergents, house paint, eye glasses and they have usually a pharmacy. The thing most people think about is that some of our smaller states are bigger than England. I dont mean it as some kind of flex but some of those states are entirely dedicated to farming and ranching. Imagine if Germany, italy and France were entirely dedicated to producing food for Europe. Now imagine that you can fit those 3 countries into the state of Texas with room to spare. Our issue is not a lack of fresh foods. Our biggest problem is being able to move those fresh foods to places that dont farm to provide food for everyone without it spoiling. We throw away more produce and meat than the rest of the world combined because of the logistical problems involved.
@davestang5454

That's only 1/2 true. Not sure if you have ever done grocery work. Inventory and timing play a big role. Grocery outlets often have TOO MUCH of an item like perishable produce arriving at a certain date .It sits there and rots. That shows just how much produce comes from the U.S. farms. Same with meat production.

Yeah, I grew up in NJ, "The Garden State." We lived in a rural area, and there was a guy down the street (country roads, no lights, almost no one on them) who had a huge, international, tulip bulb business, but he also grew a bunch of produce, like asparagus, and my stepdad was always driving over there and coming back with amazing stuff, picked minutes before he got there. Often someone would walk into the stand with a bushel he had just finish picking and say "Here, these are even fresher!" I can't eat tomatoes, but apparently we have some of the best anywhere. Also, living out in the woods, we had a big clearing we called "the orchard," with about 40 fruit trees, most of them peaches. Again, I can't eat them (I have a lot of allergies - the pollen was horrific there!), but those peach trees would each create hundreds over a month or so, limbs weighed down to the ground. They were the size of grapefruits, and by all accounts, amazing. We had a little rider tractor with a tow-along trailer, and we'd put a bunch of bushel baskets in the back, and fill it to teaming several times, and still miss hundreds that fell and rotted, or that the deer picked off. Mom would bake a bunch of pies to bring to everyone. Also farmer's markets are huge all over the US. I went to college in FL, and there was a big one full of fresh produce each week, and you can see literally dozens of tractor trailer sized wagons of oranges in huge caravans heading from the absolutely massive orange groves down the highway, and the local mail place where my mom used to live there in Ft. Myers was also an orange distributor with a big operation in back; you could watch conveyors full of oranges being packed and shipped all day every day. I live in CA these days, and it's bursting with produce and farmer's markets. Everywhere I've lived, 3 corners of the US, has had no end of amazing fruits and vegetables.

Ingredients: - 2 pounds of potatoes (preferably red or Yukon gold), peeled and diced - 3 large eggs, hard-boiled and chopped - 1/2 cup mayonnaise - 2 tablespoons yellow mustard - 1/4 cup chopped celery - 1/4 cup chopped onion - 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish - Salt and pepper to taste - Paprika for garnish (optional) - Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional) Instructions: 1. Place the diced potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 10-15 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mustard, celery, onion, and pickle relish. Stir until well combined. 3. Add the cooked and slightly cooled potatoes to the bowl with the dressing mixture. Gently fold until the potatoes are evenly coated with the dressing. 4. Add the chopped hard-boiled eggs to the potato mixture and gently stir to distribute them throughout. 5. Season the potato salad with salt and pepper to taste. You can also adjust the amount of mayonnaise, mustard, or pickle relish according to your preference. 6. Cover the potato salad and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld together. 7. Before serving, garnish the potato salad with a sprinkle of paprika and chopped fresh parsley, if desired. Enjoy your Southern-style potato salad as a delicious side dish at your next barbecue or picnic!

Our grocery stores definitely have plenty of fruits and vegetables. However, there are pockets, especially in urban or extremely rural areas, that won't have access to a grocery store. This is referred to as a food desert. There will be a store, but it will sell mostly junk food, no fresh foods. People may not have transportation to get to a grocery store. Rural areas don't usually have public transportation, and urban areas may not always have it either. Maybe this is what you had heard about? It is nice to have the options, but it can also be overwhelming.
