The reason the guy in the video does not seem to have the classic swedish rolling "r" sound, is because he is from Skåne. The reason they talk like that in Skåne is beacause Denmark is really close by.

Finland has two official languages, finnish and swedish. It is mandatory to learn swedish in school.

They were closer than they thought. "Pesukarhu" and "tvättbjörn" both literally translate to "washing bear" or "washer bear". For raccoons can wash their food in water.

the finnish sentences are in wrong tense quite often in many of these like ""pesurkarhu söi" means a raccoon ate; instead of is eating ("pesurkarhu syö"), pony= poni whereas a horse = hevonen etc.

Definitely that Finns understand Swedish better than the other way around. Finns learn Swedish at school, in the past during the 60s-70s and 80s many Finns also came to Sweden to work, so there was much more integration from the Finnish side to Sweden than the other way around. In addition, you have parts of Finland that are Swedish-speaking (we also have Finnish-speaking parts in Sweden but these are very small), but also those that are mixed, so even if you are not Finno-Swedish (he obviously did not include these but I wonder if maybe the first girls weren't, or at least had a parent who was because their Swedish was a little too good), so if you come from certain parts of Finland, you probably have a friend who is and you pick up a little of the language. Another thing is that Finns know English very well and it is, as you said, easier to understand Swedish as well. As an Englishman, it is definitely easier for you to learn Swedish compared to Finnish.

Finns often learn Swedish in school, I think that's why this challenge was easier for them :)

That finnish sentence ''Mustan kissan paksut posket'' is actually a thing here! It's like test ppl to say it that sentence several times in a row and get good laughs when they get it wrong saying as quickly as possible, I heard you also have a sentence ''she sells sea shells by the sea shore'' thats a tongue twister to me lol

this swede got a very heavy accent that is more like danish than swedish

Estonians don't speak Swedish. That's why the girl couldn't really repeat the Swedish sentences unlike the Finns.

In the end of the video you asked about studying languages here in Finland. Most of us have began to study English from the 3rd grade and Swedish from the 7th, so that's one reason our English is usually much better than Swedish. Of course there are other things like internet,. movies etc. that cause English to be everyday foreign language. Some of those people translated the sentences a little too complicated way. Eg. one of them translated "alien" as "avaruusolio" which is literally a "space creature" which is not short in English either. She could have used word "muukalainen" for alien.

It is nice to look at you having fun with languages! I am Finnish and fluent in several languages but at the moment studying basics of Japanese and Korean on my own. And I get these similar kind of feelings while listening and trying to pronounce Japanese and Korean words/sentences myself. And I am so happy when I get right even a word or two! 🙂

We (Sweden) learn a bit of Finnish in school, but not much. I know yksi, kaksi, kolemi, neili. And I know that a pint is a Yks Pitke (a long). And of course Voi Vitto, Ruotso, Sauna, Suomi, Perkele, and some other random words. Finns, because of history have mandatory classes of Swedish, but many don't remember much, much like my skills at German and French

Hi! Funny video! At school in Sweden (40 years ago for me 😂) we had to learn english quite early, but in seventh grade we had to choose between german or french as a third language. I choosed german but can't remember a word... But in Finland they are learning swedish in school 👍

His dialect made everything much more difficult, but many Finns speak good Swedish.

It gets a little wrong when the guy with the mic is from the Skåne region in Sweden. In Skåne, rolling R is not used, so it will be a little difficult for the Finns to understand

Swedish has prepositions like English. Finnish has postpositions.

That las sentence is really "Marssissa on elämää". There was also some other miss translations, but close. U had nice pronunciation!

Some of the Finnish sentences were written incorrectly, such as "Mustan kissan paksut posket" and "Marsissa on elämää". 🤷‍♂️

I had a Finnish-Swedish friend in my youth. If she was in a bad mood or depressed, there was a perfect and simple way to help her. I said to her: If I don't get a smile soon, I will start speaking Finnish. The thing is, it's practically impossible for a Swede to get the pronunciation right in Finnish. Every time I tried, she laughed so hard she almost peed herself.

To ease you on Finish languae another Nordic language, its a totaly different language! Our history, is that Finland was conquerd and was Swedens east part, for at least 700 years! Another topic that nobody tell you is thats now northen sweden, was the land of finns and Samis! They got assimilated.. they was put in Swedish schollar system.. to become swedish speaking citicens! However, after we lost finland to Russia, they become a Grand dutchy of Russia, the elite was still swedish, they actualy increse there trade to sweden in that period! In anyway, Finish language is an finno-ugrian languege, (sami fits in there to, but with 3000 years behind), its no conection to germanic or slavic languages, there cousins is Estonia, and there long lost ancestry is Hungarian! Its easy to learn a Finish words.. the problem is, one have to learn all the 14-15 causes of that word! In English and swedish (norse languages) we use 3 causes, sometimes a fourth for old words! However, there is a lot finns living in sweden and they altso have there own comunitys/clubs.. most of them is "swedish speakers", and at Åland, all of ther population is "Swedes", but finnish citicens! Its this, in finish its get a lot of letters, becuse of there 14-15 causes, they put at the end of words, so it means somthing! In English you use "The" in swedish and Norse, we put it in the end of words, still tre causes sometimes four! But Finns use 14-15 causes at the end!

This was fun to watch! I'm actually really bad at Swedish but I'm really good at English, sometimes even better than Finnish lol even if it's my language , we learn Swedish in school and English too but I was always so bad at Swedish lol, I know some words and can imitate the accent but can't talk properl it lol , I think this challenge was so easy for Finns cos it looked like a lot that they filmed this in Helsinki! Soumi is very close to Eesti, but also Magyar. I had 2 friends actually having a conversation, one spoke Soumi and the other Magyar, and they understood eachother quite ok. Sure they used Svenska and English and maybe some Deutch as a crutch. The Finnish and Estonian national anthems are actually the same song, but different lyrics, it also has Swedish lyrics (known as kungssången/the Kings sång).

Swedish and english are not only related, a huge number of "vikings" especially danes settled in england and actually changed the english language. English is basically partially a creole language (also mixed with gaelic and dutch and lots of words with french origin). Not sure why it's not talked about more. On the contrary, it's downplayed.

Many Finns and also some Swedes get the common history of the two countries a bit wrong. No doubt there were Swedish colonies in Finland starting from the 1200's - there is even an entire region still existing, Uusimaa, in Swedish Nyland and in English literally New Land, which has gotten its name in the same way as New York. (The Norwegian Vikings tried to conquer Finland around the year 1008 without any success, but there is no such information of any battles agains the Swedes.) From 1249 until 1809 Finland was an integral part of Sweden, with the right to vote for the king as long as Sweden had elected kings, and with every right for the Finns that the Swedes had. Finland was Sweden.

It is off course easier for the finish. Swedish is second language in Finland. But in Sweden we dont know mutch finnish. Sweden was collonized Finland and have for long time seen finish people kind of under the swedish.

Every Finn need to learn some Swedish. Second girl have skipped the classes. Perhaps she is from the Eastern Finland when coastal and Northern Finnish understands Swedish the mist people can speak ok.

There are about 445 Indo-European languages. Including English, Spanish, Russian, Hindi, Bengali, Persian and many others. Oh-no, I have gotten myself interested in languages now. But there are over 7000 current languages today.😵‍💫

No wondering, becourse Finnish people has to learn so called Swedish in school, but its not common Swedish, its Swedish/ Finnish, not same you talk in Sweden. In Sweden you has right to read Finnish, only if it talked in your home, not forcering , like they do in Finland whit "Swedish" langues.. that "tosi" on the sweaty part should have been "erittäin" cause it might be a spoken version but its the same as saying "wacha name?" instead of "what is your name" that pony part it should actually be "ponilla" not "hevosella" cause hevonen is a horse not a pony lol you said what translates to "foam poop" when you tried to say "vaahtokarkki" the cat part was a Finnish tongue twister but the word "paksut" is actually thick and not big mars bit was written wrong it should be "marssissa on elämää"
