Modern Finnish houses have triple or quadruple glazing. I think double glazing is not even allowed in new buildings. The windows that look like they have only two panes of glass (like the one in this video) might actually have two "thermal elements". Each of those elements are made of two sheets of glass with inert gas in between. This makes it a quadruple glazing.

Insulation works both ways. It keeps houses chill in the warm weather too. And we also have AC’s here as well.

A well-insulated house keeps the heat out in the summer better than an uninsulated house. Most northern Europeans open the windows to make it cooler, but that's wrong. When it's hot, you shouldn't really open the windows until the evening when it's cooler outside than inside. Otherwise, you let the heat in. Before that - barricade the house and draw the curtains.

I’m surprised he doesn’t know this, but that is actually triple glazing window, almost all Finnish houses have those and if not, the regulation forces you to get those when it’s time to replace the windows. And how do you know it’s a triple glaze, if you look closely, there is medal stripe between the two inner glass panels, they are approximately 0, 5 cm apart from each other, and then there is the independent outer layer. The construction of the two inner layers is air tight and you cant’t pull them apart, so you only have four surfaces to wash.

We have many bomb shelters here in Finland. If I remember correctly over 50000 shelters for over 4million people. You should watch some videos about them , because there is many interesting things in them.

I live In 50 years old apartment house and only differences are that sauna like all common spaces are at ground level and the locks are not Electronic. One key still matches all the doors you need. This has been possible In Abloy locks for ages.

Dwayne 👋 The dishwasher uses less water than washing by hand, and the water in the machine is also hotter than our hands can tolerate, so the dishes will be cleaner. Of course it is possible to manage without a dishwasher, like as a student or single person/ small family household. 👍

Why do we have a key instead of a card? Programmable key is made once with the landlord and it cannot be copied. Electric card can be maliciously read AND you need an electric lock. Preprogrammed key is inert and cannot be read. It is active only in the moment it is programmed. All the other times it is just a regular key and all the doors have a regular lock. It is failproof and can take a lot of beating compared to a card. And no the key does not MORPH automatically. It is made by a cutting machine that cuts the shaft of the key to match the code.

An electronic key is much safer than a card. You need both the programming AND the correct key-base, and you can't just copy a key with a skimmer from a distance away, like you can do with a card... at least if the key is correctly constructed.

Those storage units often are used for seasonal storage, like winter clothes in the summer, and summer clothing during winter... And as we do have double tires for the cars, we often have the other set of tires in the storage.

I also have an electronic key. Access rights are programmed into the keys when they are handed over. Electric keys look like traditional keys, but work electrically. When the key is inserted into the lock, it generates the electricity needed to open it. Electronic locking increases security, because the codes of old keys can be easily removed from the system. Each key is digitally identified and equipped with an integrated chip. The key is easier to store than the card.

triple glazing windows also protects us from warm summers, just like a dogs double coat does =) I just have a fan on in the summer to move the air around. I have mosquito nets on my balcony door that is slightly open during the night and shades down during the day.

The way the Finnish iLOQ key works is that you don't need an external power source to operate the lock. The key, when inserted, produces the necessary electricity to read the coded key and unlock the electric lock. Then turning the metal key opens the mechanical latch itself.

How do we keep cool during summer? We open windows on the opposite sides of the apartment. Altho modern houses often do have AC pumps.

I would say that all apartment buildings have these in Finland. Maybe not the roof top sauna and free suction outside, but everythings else. I've lived in 11 towns/cities across Finland and these are just the normal way.

I have almost the same things here in Sweden, a laundry room, a storare room, a bike room, a sauna in the building, recycling area, electronic keys 🤔 no tripple glacing though, or the freekishly smart drying rack! :o I'd feel so much at home in Finland I think.

Oh and the smart key = the knob of the key is the "card". Physical key doesn't get changed, that's just for YOUR door, smart part is the black handle which has rdif (?) chip.

The thing about the storage in Finland is that Finland has quite extreme seasons so you might use a lot of items in the sunmer that you don't use for up to 6 months. One example would be winter and summer tires for your car due to the seasonal driving conditions.

As far as I know, double doors are nowadays illegal to build since in case of fire, there might be so big pressure differential due to the heat that you'll be unable to escape since you can't get the inner door open. At least those need "route for air pressure" "The fire creates overpressure in the apartment, which makes it impossible to open the intermediate door"

Before electric keys, our abloy-keys are in "key and lock serie" which means that apartment's key goes to all other doors. Last apartment I had an issue where my house was in a old building and my apartment's lock was switched some time before which led to situation where a locksmith hadn't used a lock from same serie than other locks, OR they couldn't get a new lock from the old serie. So I ended up having a separate key to all doors instead of a one, it was so awful to carry a 7 different keys...

The key still has to be turned because it is a lock and not a card reader. It also does´t need to have that extra electronics in the door that a card reader has to have so it is cheaper and also more secure. Those are actually a type of swedish locks from Abloy and I think Abloy locks are the best in the world by far.

My house also has awnings/marquesses on south facing windows to stop sun from heating them during summer. Almost everyone I know has an AC, including me

In summer, keep the windows shut and close curtains(if needed) to stop the sun from getting inside

In the summer if it's warm, we open our windows and spend the day outside. :P Then it's cool enough when we return in the evening. I think there's triple glazing in my windows, but double glazing is more common. And I do think double glazing would be enough in my flat as it's a concrete building. It keeps the temperature surprisingly well over the year. In the summers, it never get warmer than 24 - 25 C inside while it can blaze off at 27 or more outside. And in the winters, it never gets colder than 22 C, this may be the thermostat, though which I have no control over as the system is automated... xD Yeah, and I got key tags in my building, when I moved in I was given 3 different tags, the main tag is for opening the door out of the building, the rubbish room and also the door for the laundry room as well as booking. The 2nd I think is a reserve if I lose tag nr 1. But the last is specifically for the bicycle room.

Modern dish washers use less water than you woud use while hand washing and in my experience they don't use too much electricity either. You also don't have to pre rinse the dishes if you don't want to, only scrape the leftovers to the bin like you would when hand washing. I lived for 15 years without a dish washer and it's my most important appliance these days. I used to have mountains of dirty dishes in the kitchen and now it's so easy to put the dirty dish in the washer after eating and be done with that. I live alone and run the machine like three times a week and in the mean time I don't have to think about dishes at all.

I love that you realised the problem with cagestorages right away. I have so much stuff there that I just wanted to push away and now I'm moving and I have to go through all that, it's absolute nightmare.

The lock is electromechanical. So there is no need to bring electricity to the lock. When you insert the key into the lock, a small generator produces electricity from the insertion of the key. A small microcircuit reads the code from the key and opens the lock if the code is correct. There is none bittings in the key (=key is flat). More information about that smartloc (iLOQ).

There were that suction garbage thing in some places in Sweden in the 70ies, albeit no recycling back then, but I guess it was too early to try that tech because it fell out of fashion. As expected, most things are the same in Sweden, the locks and saunas are exceptions, they do exist but are not very common. We typically have one storage room in the basement AND a storage room in the attic.

that key provides needed electricity for the lock, while you turn it. with card you'd need constant electricity in a machine for it to work

Damned be those trash pipes. I used to live in the area back in 14-15 when it was still a huge construction zone... those trash pipes were stuck all the time by random stuff or pizza boxes, and can't even fit one full trash bag there. Maybe this situation has improved, but when those were first installed, it was a living trash hell :-D

Actually, the electric key creates enough electricity when you turn it to read the key data so there is no need for wiring like with using cards so this is more advanced and sustainable solution. This is one genious finnish invention in my opinion.

I think many people buy a washing machine dryer combo. I don't really know how door locks with cards work, but I suspect that they need some kind of drive with external power, like a cable. The keys he showed are the kind we have, they don't need external power. when the key is inserted, current is generated which starts the electronics in the lock so it can read the key.

I guess if the card doesn't work/breaks in some way you're locked out until you get a new card but if you have a key you can use it just like a regular key and it doesn't break that easily?

Can't say that it's the same for others, but personally when I moved out and had enough spare money the first "luxury" item that I would buy was dishwasher and it was a big milestone for me. My first apartment didn't even have a place for it if I wanted to have washing machine. Also with quick google there has been a study on the water usage in Germany that found out that on average hand washing uses almost 8 times more water than dishwasher would use.

If ye have a shared laundry room, The pricing policy variates between landlord. My apartment doesnt include Laundry Room on rent. But the price is reasonable, just 5€ per month.

That thing about the locks... there's a reason I'm pretty paranoid about having my house keys IN my hand when I step out od the door; that wai I know I had them at least some point outside my apartment. About the diswasher; when you hire someone to do the job, they are the ones responsible if there's a leak. Friend of mine had to get new appliances and the plumber had to redo all the plumbing from that spot, since the contraption previous owner had created was just unsafe. And I myself don't have one. And I never want one. I handwash dishes so I can be sure they're clean and sterile. You need to do regular maintenance on your dishwasher and clean it often, remove any gunk gathering inside, do cleaning washes. And yes, saunas are very important to Finns. A house without a sauna is not considered a 'true' home.

I would disagree with some points on what you said about dishwashers. I have never heard that anyone would do regular maintenance on them. In 10 years of use I ones had to replace the power button for my dishwasher since it broke. That was very easy to replace and the part was only about 10€. I have never had to clean them other than wipe the outside front if I spill something on it or touch it with dirty hands. No gunk or cleaning cycles needed also.

Regarding the dish drying cabinets, I don't think it's so easy to install yourself just anywhere. Depending on the dimensions of your cabinets, you might have to get the shelves that allow the water to drip throgh custom made and such, I don't think I could just buy a set of them here in Finland, move somewhere else and install them in the cabinets there cause im sure the dimensions of the cabinets differ between countries as well

I love idea how much imagination Finns have used their Saunas! Someone build underwater Sauna his pool, one man took old small airplane and made Sauna that! And lot more saunas are not mentioned!
