Salmiakki isn't licorice, salmiakki is ammonium chloride and licorice is extracted from a root of a plant. Often blended together.

@elinahamalainen5867 7 месяцев назад
Yes, or referring to it as salty licorice is just weird. Unless they are referring to ammonium chloride as salt?
@shaairah
@shaairah 7 месяцев назад
Well, it is a salt. "It is a white crystalline salt that is highly soluble in water. Solutions of ammonium chloride are mildly acidic. In its naturally occurring mineralogic form, it is known as sal ammoniac."
@ArchieArpeggio
@ArchieArpeggio 7 месяцев назад
@@shaairah we made that in school and fumes of ammonium and chlorin combined under glass "dome" and the combined to solide form of very fine white powder. Black color comes from farmacial coal or from liquirice. Most of the candies are black, but there is few that isn´t totaly black or dark. Sisu Horna, Lakrisal and Fishermans friend are more of a grey or little bit brown (those three first that came to my mind and arent all even Finnish candies). Also if you buy salmiakki as a powder it isn´t ever black.

About the gifts: If you are just randomly visiting a friend for an hour or two you do not need to bring anything unless you really want to, but if you go to spent more time - like for a shared dinner or sauna evening at someone's place (go to sauna together and then eat/drink something afterwards) - it is polite to bring something. Maybe something to eat or flowers or if you know the people you visit like good coffee you can bring some a bit more expencive brand etc. Nothing too big or expencive, but it is polite not to go empty handed. Sometimes when you visit someone for a fancier dinner you might agree before hand that they will cook the meal and you could bring the dessert or the wine etc. No-one gets angry if you don't bring anything, it is just more polite to do so.

This is what I always say to forgein travellers I meet outside Finland: If you are looking for a huge party all the time and places with lots of people, amazing fun fun fun.. Finland is not your place. But if you want some peace and quiet for a change, fresh air, green nature, swimming in natural waters etc. then Finland is worth visiting. So it just depends on what you need for yourself if this is a good or a bad/boring place to travel to.

@herrakaarme
@herrakaarme 6 месяцев назад
@@Jantzku It's not a Finnish word if someone is speaking a language other than Finnish. Then it's a loan word. Loan words are exceedingly often adapted to the usual form of whatever language it happens to be. Finnish itself is absolutely jam-packed with loan words from Indo-European languages, mostly Germanic ones. We don't pronounce those words usually exactly the same as they were in the original language. Do foreigners complain to you about the added "i" at the end of a word taken from another language where it ended in a consonant? No, they will only laugh at the phenomenon, finding it funny how there's always that "i" (or some other vowel). But if a foreigner comes to you and says: "Anteeksi, minä haluan soona. Missä on soona?" Then you could tell them, in addition to telling them where to find the sauna, that in Finnish it's not pronounced like that, since they are trying to speak Finnish.

In Finland people who like mushrooms eat lots of them in the autumn time. Like I do. I pick my mushrooms in the forrest and then add them to all kinds of foods: soups, stews etc. There are a big variation of eatable mushrooms in Finnish forrests so I do recommed tasting them specially if you come here in the end of the summer/early autumn. My favourites are: kangasrousku, haaparousku, kanttarelli, suppilovahvero and musta torvisieni. And ofcourse herkkutatti (the one that is really popular in Italy). I have no idea if these mushrooms have English names, but they are all well known and available in Finland during the mushroom season.

Sweden have developed alot from making salmiakki candies over the decades. As i were child most of i remember were like those Pingvins. Hard hand you really had to shew those alot. Taste wasn´t so great either. We did have same kind of "coins" that we called merkkari (pirate candies that stucked in to the teeths). We just had better taste in those so those deffenetly are legendary candies. Those were later banned as becouse if you were just sucking the candy and you accidently swallowed (as a kid) it might got stuck in your throat and get you killed. There were also fruit version red and yellow. Well after some years those candies made comeback but the size had to smaller becouse that choking hazzard.

Salmiakki is very much an acquired taste. And it comes in many forms and strengths. These days there's also a small army of things that have salmiakki flavor. If I'm not too badly mistaken, salmiakki actually started out as a powdered medicine you could only get in drug stores. It was developed to treat low blood pressure. While eating a lot of salmiakki quickly can raise your blood pressure, it wasn't deemed a very effective medication and the drug stores noticed a lot of kids bought it as a snack instead.

The conjugation system is pretty much like Latin... so anybody who has learned Latin (or ancient greek) will at least know what to expect when trying to learn Finnish. Finnish has a lot less loanwords from Latin than even English does, but the system of prefixes, suffixes and the relatively relaxed order of words within sentences are similar. Latin is related to Italian, Spanish, French, Romanian, and Portuguese, BUT the grammar is very different and in fact much more similar to Finnish than any of the languages actually related to it. It's actually a very funny and interesting linguistic coincidence.
@elderscrollsswimmer4833
@elderscrollsswimmer4833 7 месяцев назад
Except that Latin has a gender system, complex preposition case combos, Finnish has no gender, and when we do use preposition it goes with partitive and any postposition goes with genitive. Thing is, IE languages dropped most cases while Uralic languages added more.
@ArchieArpeggio
@ArchieArpeggio 7 месяцев назад
Well when christianity came to Finland the priests were speaking latin and so i would not say that it would be so coincidence as you might quickly think. Highly edjucated people and those who joined the chuch had to learn to speak latin to disapate to the chuches teachings.

Sweden and Finland compete in hockey, Sweden and Norway compete in skiing. It's a bit sensitive to talk about sometimes. A hockey event from last year that I recommend you watch is the Maple Leafs tribute to the Swedish hockey player Börje Salming who paved the way for Nordics into the NHL (it's explained in the clip). Börje had the disease ALS when he received a tribute that most stars don't receive until after their death. About a week later he received an even bigger tribute in Sweden and I think it was about 2 weeks after that he died. People won't be offended for the sauna pronunciation. It's pronounced one way when it's in finnish and another in english, just bc the english word comes from finnish roots, doesn't mean it should be pronounced finnish way when speaking english. Finnish has plenty of loan words from other languages and we pronounce them the finnish way, not the way the language of origin pronounces them.

As a finn I agree with you that mispronouncing finnish word useualy dosn't offence us. I think finns undersstand that finnish is not easy laguage to learn for a english speakers. If some one not native finnish can say some finnish words its nice surprise. I feel that if a Finnish person corrects how to pronounce examble the word sauna, it is usually because this Finnish person thinks that it is nice that this foreigner speaks even some words of Finnish, and wants to help, to pronounce the word correctly. and this is again due to the fact that Finnish is such a difficult language for many foreigners. My favourite ice cream is salmiakki-ice cream. I also put some salmiakki in one of my favourite stews, it gives it a nice flavour. I would eat more salmiakki, but my blood pressure says no. There are a lot of different salmiakki candies to choose from. I recommend you to taste some, but organize a poll which is the best salmiakki candy, so your experience would be better.

just to make clear, finland was NOT occupied by sweden but incorporated into the swedish kingdom helsinki is named after the people who moved there (people from the swedish county of hälsingland), finland had finnish represetants in the swedish parlament etc... sweden and finland have never ever been to war, there has never been any war of independence or any rebellions to free finland from sweden like with scotland IF you want to try some salmiakki for beginners i would recommend you try the salmiakki chocolate bar, its a milk chocolate bar with salmiakki filling which i've seen people who normally doesn't like licourice enjoy

One fun thing to do with words learning languages is always crossword puzzles: even in one's own language - you learn a lot, they're good for memory, brain food and spelling skills. I use them in printed form, but you might find some in different languages online. Btw., that Japanese-Finnish comparison is good: if you add Latin to it you get three languages which are pronounced a little similarly (and which I like and have studied in my time, too, besides English and German).

Finnish dish with mushroom, here is one, metsästäjänleipä (a hunters sandwich) which has a white bread and a mushroom sauce on top of it. It's so gooood! And a funny thing about tourists in Finland what I've experienced. They get lost all the time. I don't know how many times I've called a cab or said at what direction to go from here. Once a japanise couple said to me that you work very well for your hotel, I said I don't, I'm just a pedestrian here helping you out. They had come to a wrong hotel and were baffling not knowing what to do and I saw it.

Well, as a Finn I'd say both licorice and ammonium chloride are both an acquired tastes and there are different kinds of candy from a number of companies and personally I can say some candies I do like, others I steer clear of even within the same company. If you ever feel pressured into doing something you are not comfortable doing, especially with things inserted into your body I encourage anyone to vocalize said feeeling of the situation immediately.

Salmiakki isn't my favorite but I don't mind it from time to time. Except Fazer's salmiakki chocolate, that thing is so good! It's probably my favorite candy, I definitely recommend trying it! Since the salmiakki is combined with milk chocolate it's not quite as harsh? It's like liquid salmiakki covered in Fazer's famous milk chocolate

Hey! Black licorice really is a taste that you have to get used to over time. There are many kinds of it and I don't like all of them either. I don't really like salty black licorice, but for example black licorice ice cream, Laku/Soft licorice and black licorice powder are good. The best is perhaps a self-made Black licorice shots made from Tyrkisk peber original & votka.

Salmiakki is the best thing in the world. But there is a good thing to compare it in the UK: Marmite. It is the Finnish Marmite, an absolute much try classic, but one that can divide people. I know a few Brits living in Finland who sometimes get the craving for Marmite and many Finns are the same with salmiakki.

Let's see -Mushrooms: some people pick them and eat a lot of them during the season. Some hate them. It's quite divicive. I don't feel like Finnish food is "mushroom food" because of that but I can understand why someone would. -No, don't take your towel to the sauna 😅 That's the fastest way to make sure everyone knows you are foreigner. If you want to cover up, you put on swimming suit. That works both in male/female only -saunas and in mixed ones. Often others follow suit too if someone (at least if you are among first to go to the sauna) uses swimsuit because we don't want to make things awkward for anybody.. Not always though. -As others have pointed out salmiakki (ammonium chloride, which is a type of salt) is totally different product than (black) liquorice (which is from root of Glycyrrhiza glabra -plant). But yes, there are Finns that don't like black liquorice or salmiakki. My husband is one of those. He is weirdo as a Finn 😁 But I totally love salmiakki and like liquorice. I think I liked liquorice more when I was kid but nowadays I feel it's a bit bland and I opt to go with salmiakki instead if I'm picking candy for myself 😄 -Don't disobey the rules isn't common sense to all 😅 Some countries are way more relaxed on the rules but we are really sticklers for rules. I have waited traffic light to change in the middle of the night waiting to walking across an empty road more times than I remember. Even if I know it doesn't hurt anybody or anyone will ever know if I just cross the street, I will still wait the light to change out of principle 😅😃 -There is tourists in Finland but we also have room to not have them all in one area. During summer there are tourists in cities (Finns are in summer cottages though if possible 😉) and during winter in Lapland. -Oh and one last thing: don't take pronunciation tips from that guy, you pronunciate Finnish better than him 😂

Salmiakki isn't my favorite but I can eat it and I have cravings for it once in a while. I personally don't like certain salmiakki like Sisu (it's too strong for me) and Fazer's Pantteri (I don't really like candies with sugar coating). Licorice is also mostly good (also depends on the brand etc.). I absolutely love Fazer's Tyrkisk Peber salmiakki candies (I just love the fact that you can suck a hole in it and try to get the powder from inside), I also never bite those. As a kid I always gave the salmiakki to my mum who loves it (even now if there is salmiakki in a candy bag/box that I don't like, I often just give it to my mum the next time I see her).

I do like Salmiakki, it's delicious as long as you don't eat too much at once, I like to buy one of the many mixed bags we have here with some salmiakki and some fruit flavoured candy, I find it balances out the Salmiakki quite nicely, but sometimes I do buy just Salmiakki as well and just eat it more slowly... Also, Dave Cad who I know you're familiar with, he's also brittish and when he first tried salmiakki, he absolutely hated it, now he loves it, it really is an aquired taste, not something alot of people are gonna love from the first time they try it And no, it's not really liqourice, thats just a comparison people tend to use

Ice hockey is a fun sport to watch. In Sweden, I would probably say that at least 80-90% like Salt licorice, of course there are always some who don't, but they are relatively few. I would think that the number is even more in Finland who like it because they have fewer immigrants (most immigrants in Sweden after a while start to like it too).

Swedish in the signs is only in the coast. You dont see that elsewhere in finland :) I always bring something when i go visit someone, unless it is kind of like a daily thing or so why we are meeting. It doesnt have to be a big thing, but just something. So at least i was brought up to that culture. I love salmiakki! It is not actually licorice at all, they are two completely different things.
