How prevalent is islamophobia in the UK? How can we help Jewish and Muslim communities at this time? Why have the Oslo Accords failed?
Rory and Alastair are joined by the first Muslim woman Chair of the Conservative Party, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, to discuss her politics, life growing up in an immigrant family in Northern England, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and much more.

@@PoldarkGodzilla Tories and labour are proven authoritarian arseholes to me. Evil is inherent in that. Only difference at the moment is that Tories have been proven incompetent this time round and labour are presently untested. But speaking as a northerner who grew up in the 80s... I'm certainly not inclined to ever give Tories any benefit of the doubt, no. But warsi doesn't need benefit of the doubt cos she's always been fairly clear of thought and on the side of compassion - even when I disagree with her economic views. I equate the current Tory government with much evil. That's not the same as all Tories. And it definitely doesn't make me pro labour. And I don't know what any of that has to do with woke, both parties are unfeasibly censorious and thin skinned, I've no time for either of them and I've no time for identity politics whichever side of the made up fake divide you think I'm on.

Idk what the popularity of this channel is by country, but for non-Americans and Americans that might not be familiar, look up Ben Ferencz. He was one of the prosecutors at the Nuremberg Trials and one of the founding fathers of the International Criminal Court. His passion for international law and accountability was incredible. He passed away in April of this year and the world would do well to embrace his legacy.

One point of disagreement I am not fond of Cameron. Especially his rapacious greed. Warsi, I knew not much about. Very interesting with her background, her parents were a firm base for her to achieve. And that is where a lot of our values stem. They talking history and current affairs at the dinner table and the infinite importance of education. Ordering Uber eats and sitting in front of GB News, is a road to ruin and perhaps why these days many only learn how to shout and scream at each other, and have lost that route to healthy debate? It was a good conversation. I wonder what Braverman was like at the kitchen table, I shudder to imagine?

This makes me wish we could move beyond the old party boundaries, origins and sponsorships. Indeed, we probably have to, as the world changes further. What cartoon groteques and horrors we have unleashed into power these days.

Just a reminder of the absolute shame that Alastair Campbell is still able to hold sway in the UK zeitgeist especially over Middle Eastern topics, given his high profile role in pushing the UK's involvement in the Iraq war and causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians. He should hold shame for the rest of his life - no matter how eloquent he may be on a podcast.

For mosts parts i agree with Sayeeda warsi. However one aspect i disagree with was iro the role of the state. If the state did not offer free education i suspect many working class people would not have gone onto further education. Equally the NHS, social securty, social housing. All these were snd are neccessary. Unless of course one wants to go back to the Victorian era or perhaps emulate the USA. I for one prefer the european model of care and government intervention.

There are people in every society that need help to succeed. The immigrants that come to the UK are usually the aspirational go getters of their societies with strong supportive families, which is why Warsi may think that people can all succeed on their own and government should stay out of the way (her philosophy of why she's a Tory and believes in small government). She's fighting for the Tories to get back to the centre ground but I don't think that's going to happen now. It's unlikely in the foreseeable future. Otherwise her views are informed, intelligent and wise.

As an Israeli, I want to commend Sayeeda for her insightful understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is often rare among foreign politicians. While I also support the two-state solution, I'd like to highlight a specific obstacle not covered in her talk. To simplify the matter, there are two primary concerns in Israel regarding this issue, each potentially pointing to a different solution. The first, which supports a two-state solution, as Sayeeda explained, is the fear that annexing the West Bank and reoccupying Gaza could jeopardize Israel's status as a Jewish state. The second concern, leaning toward a one-state solution, relates to the potential of a weak palestinian state becoming a terror state in the West Bank, akin to the one in Gaza. This fear is rooted in the 2006 experience in Gaza when Hamas won elections, used its power to undermine democracy in the Gaza Strip and started posing a direct threat to Israel. To understand the gravity of this concern, consider the scenario where a situation like the one in Gaza unfolds from the West Bank, if in the not so populated south Hamas massacred 1,400 and took more than 200 civilians hostage, what might happen if terrorists would breach the borders near major cities like Tel Aviv, Kfar Saba, Herzeliya, and others which are much more densely populated. This issue represents a significant fear among Israelis regarding the conflict. If not for this fear, many on the right in Israel would probably support a two-state solution. While I'm not a historian, feel free to ask me about the conflict or the situation that happens now in Israel, I'll try to answer to the best of my abilities.

Ultimately, the Palestinians are being occupied by the Israelis who seem hell bent on expanding settlements and deleting Palestine. And how has Israel’s policies provided security for its citizens? Commit to peace and you shall have security but instead, your nation has chosen expansion and the continued dispossession and expulsion of Palestinians. Denying them the same rights you enjoy due to ethnicity. A legal system that discriminates them. 2006 Hamas elections - what a fairy tale you have woven there. Your country along with the US tried to engineer a coup for the PA to oust Hamas and Hamas foiled that attempt. Your nation repeats the slogan that there is no partner for peace while it continues to expand settlements. Your nation has no interest in a 2 state solution.

So I think that saying that we dont have peace because we didnt try is just objectively wrong.
@narmi218
@narmi218 10 месяцев назад
@@mangonamnam6855 you say couple of years but then refer back to recent so called peace attempts which actually go back to 2008, 15 years ago. And that striving for peace as you call it such as unilaterally leaving Gaza in 2006 but still controlling it externally by land air and sea. Olmert’s 2008 unilateral plan to annex most of the settlements in the West Bank. Ehud baraks peace plan where shlomo ben Ami the foreign mister at the time admitted himself that had he been Palestinian, he too would have rejected it. While all at the same time, the approval and expansion of further settlements continued. This is not striving for peace but subjecting the Palestinians to accepting scraps. Talk about peace while gobbling up all the pizza slices and throwing the scraps to the Palestinians. What did the PA in the West Bank get in return for denouncing violence, giving up armed resistance and recognizing the state of Israel. Did they get peace in the West Bank or are you going to blame that on Hamas too?

Warsi who demanded we disarm Israel and arm Hamas? The good Baronness who tells us that we must listen to the 'extremist' Islamist groups because 'they are the representative voice of the Muslim community.' Not sure she is the voice we need to listen to.

Baroness Warsi is an absolute credit to her parents. She's also a precious asset to Britain and really should be heard more often. More and more people like her, with the ability to reason, demonstrate why we need to dispense with the party system and adopt proportional representation. Imagine a cabinet formed of people from both left and right based on integrity and a desire to create policy based on clear thinking and what is right for the country and all its people.

@@jasonburder3963 Her parents longing for male offspring seemed natural to me though.E.g like her grandfather and father worked in the military for it's natural for them to want that male representation in the military.

There are extremist faith schools in the Uk. I dont believe there should be any faith schools in the UK as it means separating children by faith and this includes disbanding Christian schools. It doesnt work well in NI or Lebanon and surly will end up not working in Britain.

Very down to earth and intelligent woman. As someone who is not only Muslim but who is from the north and from a working-class background, she probably has (the potential for) wider reach and the ability to connect to and understand the masses of ordinary people in this country. We need more people like her in politics, and in Cabinet roles, and less people like Rory - who, as much as I do indeed like the chap, is unable to connect to and understand the majority of ordinary Brits.

Absolutely fascinating woman and her views marginalized by a government and opposition only interested in Israel's right to defend herself. Impressed they didn't ask her to condemn Hamas multiple times before they allowed her to speak. Please interview Jenny Mason from Jewish Voice for Labour also. You may then talk about the weaponisation of anti-Semitism and how successfully criticism of the state of Israel has been completely silenced.

The so-called interviewers should have taxed Baroness Warsi with case of the schoolmaster and his family who have been in hiding for months after threats of murder by muslim thugs. It started in Batley, just two miles north of where the Baroness grew up. Even worse, why did she not offer an opinion on the case, unprompted?

Why does every Muslim have to account for what every other Muslim does? How is that even possible? There are batshit nutters in every community……..and those that inflame the comments made by these batshit nutters and pull them right out of perspective in order to cause divisions. Just look at the Trojan horse scandal.

I have worked with numerous muslims over the years and I do get disturbed by their culture at times. Some Muslims I have met openly say they are committed to introducing Sharia into England. I also have come across many instances in which women have accepted (powerless to resist) massive decisions like forced marriage as part of their culture. I have been disturbed at how Muslim men treat their wives and girlfriends. I've had deep seated concerns about men from Bangladesh having multiple wives whilst living in England which is widely accepted and experienced deep hints that the imam? at the mosque can make decisions such as granting a second wife providing a financial payment is made to the mosque. I suspect these cultural aspects will wash out over several generations as women become educated and gain financial independence but it feels like these muslim women are controlled and are deeply unhappy as a result. I don't respect the Muslim religion and feel it is very backward. I am a white atheist. I do think religion is a system used to control the masses and established by people who seek control.

Cannot abide most Tories, but BSW is clearly a decent skin; intelligent, thoughtful, authentic and just simply likeable. To me she seems like someone who is telling the truth; albeit her truth. And I've always thought so, even a decade ago when she was in Smarmy Cameron's government. She is simply a credible character. And I say this without agreeing with her on policy issues much at all. She is clearly a person of character: most people in her situation in 2014 would go along to get along; but she didn't; she walked away from a Cabinet seat and a promising career because she genuinely stands for something. I really respect that.
