My Mother worked for a consultant in gynae and obstetrics in the 1960s to 90s. She got phone calls she told me about from Saudi men requesting that women are sewn up after giving birth each time so they could be virgins again. The answer was always No, but it must have been yes somewhere else or there wouldn't be any phone calls. This virgin thing takes a woman's personhood away.

I'm a somali muslim. Thank God we don't have this nonsense. They used to do FGM to ensure we stayed a virgin. Thankfully that practice is now dying out. Regardless none of these misogynistic practices are islamic just cultural. The only thing i would advocate before marriage is a blood test and std test to ensure both parties are protected.

Agreed it should not be tolerated. Activists in the UK campaign against the control on women for education, work or dress code in their own counties in the East. I would love to see an undercover testing of these virginity examinations, to have various women (some who are virgins, some who are not virgins, and some who have already given birth) examined, and to see if the doctor can even tell the difference

Many of these women lose sexual function from having their lips cut off and clitoris severed, also leading to lifelong chronic pain. Thank you for highlighting this. It's been going on for DECADES. Virginity tests are also performed on young women and girls that are sold for their first sexual experience (nothing to do with religion or marriage but part of the sex-worker industry).

Hmm. I find it hypocritical. Most couples expect a man to know what he is doing on a wedding night. Why can not the same be true for the woman he is marrying. If she lost her virginity, and the man truly loves her, why not just accept her as she is. If the woman is a virgin on her wedding night, it is OK. If she is not a virgin, it is also OK. One is not better than the other. We are all different, and women have different personality types, so why expect the same behavior from all. Some women can choose and act on their choice to preserve their virginity, others can not. Also, practicing virginity is a religious thing. Overstressing and overfocusing on it is unhealthy. I think the best thing is to accept things as they are. If virginity is lost it is pointless to stitch it up. It would cause the woman unnecessary mental torment, that they are deceiving themselves and their partner about it. If the virginity factor is very important to the male, and they would not be able to get over it should the lie come to light, this could destroy a potentially successful marriage. So I believe, everybody should just be honest with themselves, with their partner and just accept things as they are. Reflecting upon my own life, I have come to realize that preserving virginity is not important to find a suitable partner, what is important is to find a partner who accepts you as you are.

For a religion that’s supposed to incorporate and I quote “kindness (to people and animals), charity, forgiveness, honesty, patience, justice, respecting parents and elders, keeping promises, and controlling one's anger” it sure seems like Islam has a lot to learn in its treatment of women and children! As one woman mentioned (sorry, I can not recall her name), it seems far more invasive and shameful, as well as less honorable, to have a doctor- especially a male doctor- looking at her and poking fingers in or doing surgery! Perhaps a grassroots effort is needed to educate in this area-maybe starting with the Imam, and/or the mothers. I understand it is rooted in cultural aspects, which are difficult to change, but by knowing the biological facts, things might slowly change. For example, "virginity" can not really be proven or not, not all virgins bleed the first time, and many that do bleed do so due to dryness and not being in an aroused state. Ok, that last one might be too much for now.

Think the way the Dr's are being portrayed is very unfair. Think its the 2nd Dr it was showing was very concerned for the 'daughter' and repeatedly asked if she's sure she wants to do it and told the 'mother' to not force her or pressure her. She did a good job and showed genuine concern.

If it was a real situation and the doctor refused to examine her, the mother would likely take her to someone else, maybe not as kind, maybe someone dodgy. If the procedure is legal in the UK, the doctor can't fight the system herself. I think what she did was choosing the least evil.
