British Airways Concorde G-BOAC take off from Edinburgh in 1994

Concorde G-BOAC made an unexpected visit to Edinburgh airport operating the Edinburgh-Heathrow shuttle in place of the normal 757. Certainly turned a few heads when it appeared on approach! I took the video from the old rooftop viewing area at Edinburgh before it was closed. Apologies for the poor quality. Beautiful plane, it was always awe inspiring to see it.
More videos of Concorde can be found on the excellent TheConcordeChannel youtube channel at ru-vid.com

Have just seen this video. I was the fortunate Captain that day; we were called at home to see how soon we could be at Heathrow and my crew assembled ready for a midday departure. It was St. Andrew's day and, in my opinion a clever commercial idea to substitute the Concorde. We flew London to Glasgow via the North Sea route to go supersonic reaching 60,000 easily (we were climbing like an express train at 59500' and felt slight negative g as we levelled off). We then flew from Glasgow to Edinburgh in poor weather with much low cloud which was unfortunate because we carried a special group of passengers, children all with some disability and all escorted by carers. We finally flew from Edinburgh back to London, again at Mach 2. My best memory of the day was meeting three passengers (all passengers visited the cockpit in those days if they wished) who worked together, were on our first leg to Glasgow and who were due to fly home from Glasgow on the Shuttle later that day. Hearing of our plans to fly back from Edinburgh, they hired a taxi and drove to Edinburgh, so we met them again on the flight back to Heathrow. Happy Days!!

When I was about 6 or 7, I flew in Concorde from Heathrow to the Air Tattoo airshow... It was only a 20 minute flight and we didn't go supersonic, but that doesn't matter I can remember little bits and pieces of it but at the time I didn't understand the importance and uniqueness of the plane. You are all probably not interested about that, but if you have flown in Concorde you just feel like you have to tell everyone about it - I can't help it. You'd think I was the bloody pilot.

I was just a kid when Concorde was withdrawn, didn't really appreciate her at the time. Having since seen the other Olympus-powered delta quite a bit, it reinforces my respect for Concorde as a fabulous white elephant. The very concept of a delta-wing narrow-body reheated public transport airliner! Audacious, absurd, awesome.

It probably should never have been built, it was a daft idea, a dead-end dick-waving exercise that the Yanks had the good sense to back out of before even attempting to build a prototype... but I'm glad it existed and that I saw it fly. It was a creature very much of its time - but it had its time and became an obsolete dinosaur competing against much larger, more luxurious, quieter and roomier aircraft, speed its only trump card. Even without Paris and the ensuing grounding of the type, I don't see how it could have survived economically against the A380. It was a magnificently mad machine, and now, rightly, a museum piece.

It was a tremendous feat of aircraft engineering and far beyond its time, we are now in 2020 and no sign of supersonic air travel on the horizon. Aircraft designs are now extremely boring, adding to the overall experience of air travel of a frustrating exercise of trying to get to a domestic or international destination in a timely manner.

Aircraft designs have become rather generic, that's for sure. Back in the day, apart from the Concorde, the 747, 727, Constellation, Trident, DC-10, L1011, Caravelle, etc etc, were all distinctive, but I think engineers have wrung every last efficiency out of the design for performance and have settled on the optimum look, which most passenger planes seem to have these days.

They only generated a sonic boom once they passed the speed of sound, although the engines gave a nice roar on take off! If you've never heard a sonic boom before it's extremely loud, so they didn't usually go supersonic until they were out over the Atlantic. You're right, it was an absolutely beautiful plane and those who took the decision to ground it should be hanging their heads in shame, but sadly, I doubt they really care.

Yes I agree, I remember when my local international airport (Melbourne) had a viewing platform where you could go and watch the aircraft come and go. It was removed years ago and you can't do it now. There seems to be more emphasis on squeezing retail dollars out of people. Then again, airports have to make money, I suppose.

It was quite rare for Concorde to visit Edinburgh as it mostly flew from London/Paris to New York due to the sonic boom. But even though passengers in this clip were lucky enough to fly this plane they would not be flying faster than the speed of sound. Simply because the plane was only going as far as London and it only takes an hour and a half to get there so if it flew at super sonic speed it would take 45 minutes roughly to get there which is a waste of fuel.
@JukarTazaniaMan
@JukarTazaniaMan 6 лет назад
rstein926 much the reverse actually; Concorde flew the cross-Atlantic mainly because it was the most efficient (possible) route for supersonic flight, and she never flew supersonic on Edinburgh to London mainly because of the sonic boom.

They replaced a 757 with Concorde on a domestic shuttle route? Sounds very unlikely; the revenue from the fares wouldn't even pay for the extra fuel consumption.

'but BA did not want it to go to Richard Branson.' Errr Richard Branson is a bullshitter. BA did not want to retire that aircraft but the French parts manufacturers did not want to continue making parts as Air France did not wish to continue operating as they were making a loss. The chances for keeping Concorde in service were stifled by Airbus's lack of support for continued maintenance. Without parts, the aircraft had its flying licence ended which is why there are no exibition flights. It cant be flown and Branson giving the impression he would operate it was just a publicity stunt. And people fall for it!

@Doomsday2060 You heard wrong on both cases. The only Concorde left with fluid-transfer capability is F-BTSD, and even then she's badly suffering from internal tanking corrosion. As far as the concrete thing goes, some was put in the engine casing of one to act as a weight balance, but none was put within the actual ships themselves. Also, the only reason any were "cut up" is for transport to their final places, all were reassembled, though some superficially. G-BOAD now has a "fake" nose.
