Do you have a military ancestor? Findmypast expert Paul Nixon is here to help you decypher regimental numbers and records.
With so many British Army service records destroyed by over-zealous Whitehall clerks on the one hand, and German bomber crews on the other, making the most of what does survive, takes on added importance. In this webinar, Paul will explain how the regimental numbering system was operated between 1881 and 1920 and how you can unpick your British Army ancestor's past by working out when regimental numbers were issued.

Many thanks to Paul Nixon for finding 8 members of my family in Ireland who had served in WW1 and before. I would have never been able to track them down.

My Grand Father had two numbers, one for the 21st Lancers and one for the Veterinary Corp. He served with the 21st until he retired, then was recalled from the reserve into he 9th Lancers, at the outbreak of WW1. Then transferred to the Veterinary Corp.

I found this very informative and helpful. I have been trying to track down the unit of a Military Medal winner (who’s medal I am privileged to own) who served with the Royal Artillery and then the Royal Engineers. I had some information, but no service record. Using your information regarding Regimental numbers and how to search for them, I was able to find the Brigade he served with and from there, the War Diary that mentions his award win. Thank you.

All service decoration, has the soldier's service number, name and rank inscribed on the edge of the medal. This should help to track down the service record. Both of my Grand Father's and Father's medals are inscribed

Not getting this. Richard Stevens moved to the 3rd London Regiment as 85263, and Alfred James moved to the Royal Fusiliers (a different regiment, presumably with independent numbering) as 85264. Had the numbering schemes been reorganised yet again?

Sorry for the delay, and you may already have had an answer. When moving from one regiment to another, a new serial number was allocated to an individual, which makes tracing a nightmare. It wasn't until after 1920 that numbers that followed the person were introduced. Even after this, numbers were initially issued on a regimental basis, but at least the number "followed" the the individual regardless of which regiment they subsequently joined.

The full title of 3rd London Regiment was 3rd (City of London) Battalion London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). I suspect that in recording the transfer one clerk abbreviated it to 3rd London Regiment while another clerk abbreviated it to Royal Fusiliers and so the two men had consecutive numbers in the same battalion. The alternative explanation of consecutive numbers in two different regiments seems unlikely.

My great grand father fought in ww1 and there is no regimental record for him which I am really disappointed about the information on it would have been amazing. I live in hope it may have been filed wrong but I doubt it. ☹️☹️

I found in the regimental number era marriage certificates of the groom's, the father of the bride/groom occupations gave basic but more factual information than army regimental number system. A system that reissues numbers once someone leaves a regiment was ridiculously open to merging records. People with the same name (and even occupation before enlisting) mistaken as someone else. This wasn't rectified for years as you don't talk back to the 'upper class' 'officers' who can do no wrong, unless you want a flogging.

So there was an even worse system before 1881? I thought it was the regimental number system lol.
