That is why Americans are so patriotic. Most Europeans mistake it for nationalism in the European sense, but it's not actually our country that we're so passionate about. It's the principles and ideals that our country was founded on that we revere, the idea that every human being on the planet has rights that aren't granted by the government, but you just naturally have. In fact, if your government does violate those rights, then the people have the right and duty to overthrow that government. It's why our government officials and military swear an oath not to the country, the president or any other politician. They swear to uphold and protect the Constitution.

I thought I heard you say, either your going to visit the U.S. or move to the U.S. next year! If you want to see that very Flag, that stood at the battle called the "Defiance of Fort McHenry"! It is on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.! Approximately 28 soldiers died, and 50 wounded during the overnight battle!

I know what the colors stand for, but Dad told me every time he saw the red strips, he thought of every drop of American blood shed for our freedom. Athletes have the right to kneel, and protesters have the right to burn the flag. But they only have those rights because of the red stripes. And I have the right not to like it.
When I was in elementary school back in the 1970s every student in my class was required to sing or recite the Star Spangled Banner from memory. We also had to explain the meaning of each line of the song. As for how it was written we learned that Francis Scott Key went out to a British ship as a negotiator. When he was finished he could not get ashore as the tide was out. He could do nothing but watch as the other British ships attacked the unnamed American fort. The next morning when he saw the American flag still flying above the fort he was inspired to write a poem that was later put to music that we now recognize as the Star Spangled Banner. We did not learn about any conversations he had on board the ship or of him visiting the fort the following day. This next part is something I once read in an issue of Reminisce magazine about 25 to 30 years ago. I’m doing this from memory so please excuse me if I get something wrong. At the start of the 20th century the United States of America did not have an official national anthem. The Star Spangled Banner was only one of about four or five different songs that the American people were asked to vote for to be the official national anthem for the United States of America. For many of the adults the Star Spangled Banner was the last song on the list that they wanted to be the national anthem. The American people wanted the American government to stay out of the conflicts that were going on in Europe and Asia at the time and they viewed the Star Spangled Banner as a song that glorified war. As for the other songs on the list they could have chosen from the adults could not agree on which one song should be made the national anthem. As this was not an election to select a political candidate or some issues school children many of them attending one room schoolhouses throughout the country were allowed to vote. The majority of the school children voted for the Star Spangled Banner and as it received more votes than any of the other songs after it was ratified by the American government it official became the national anthem for the United States of America sometime in the 1930s.

Yes the story is a bit embelished, but the spirit of mythos is to describe a sentiment or endeavor. The song is true and the commitment and bravery were real. That is the point. Everyone in the world can find inspiration in the American story. A story like no other in history.

Yep the flag was still up & in tatters....it was @ the fort (with the paper w/ the song written on it) until both got sent to the Smithsonian Institute...natural history building.
You can actually see in person that flag from fort McHenry from the battle that night on September 13, 1814 at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History at 10th Street & Constitution Ave. NW. Washington, DC 20560. It is so unbelievably amazing to see in person it gives you a whole new perspective on what happened there that night.

I live in TX, can't remember the song but south was fighting for states rights, that was what the Civil War was mainly fought for Abe Lincoln republican northerner then changed it to abolition of slavery to get more people to fight
South during Civil War used to be democrats pro slavery and small government things seemed to have changed Republicans small federal government and leave it up to each state

Thanks for reacting to this. I was a Medic in the North Carolina Army National Guard from 1981 to 1987. You now know why the American Flag is not to touch the ground. One Nickname for the American Flag is Old Glory. The American Flag consists of 50 Stars to represent the 50 States and 13 Stripes to represent the original 13 States. There are 4 Verses to the National Anthem. Please react to all Four Verses of the National anthem.

Another part of this story is that the fort commander had some ladies sew a new much bigger flag to replace the battle worn flag. That flag is on display in Washington.
"Battle Hymn of the Republic" was the unofficial battle hymn of the Union, or the "North". There is an amazing rendition of this tear jerking song by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir that you really must listen to. I cannot help but get choked up and ultimately crying my eyes out whenever I listen to it. You MUST listen to it, even if you don't choose to react to it on your channel.

As one American, I am PROUD how well you were able to bring in the ACTUAL historical details to correct the story. Most people don’t even know we fought the Brits twice lol, over many videos I’ve tried to at least share my love for our country and this story of our history, while at least given more clear context to give a better accuracy. All in all though, this has seemed to contribute to an uplift in American spirits, if not that, have a lot of foreigners actually UNDERSTAND American patriotism and how our flag and national anthem is the core to our spirit and why we are very protect of it. A lot of other countries have made the mistake thinking we’re like them, the flag is about the government and the national anthem is a call for rallying the country. Many of them get a reality check that there is a deeper meaning that many Americans who know their history holds dear to our hearts, why every time we listen to a national anthem live we have this build up of love for our country and honor and respect to anyone who has died for that flag, the representation of freedom, the symbol of the American citizens. It is not about showing off being prideful, it is about reflecting how our country exists because an American fort defies the odds to face the superior British empire but remain standing, and how blessed we are to have inherited such a gift, to hoping to pass this gift on to the future like our ancestors did fighting for the flag to stay up.
I'm American. My family have lived in Florida for 5 generations (before that Spain and Cuba). From elementary school every morning to start the school day the entire class stood at attention with our right hands over our hearts facing the flag while the national anthem was played and afterwards we would recite The Pledge of Allegiance. Every school day. I remember how they first started teaching us in maybe 2nd or 3rd grade about the various wars just introducing it at kid friendly levels with music and songs and we learned the words and sang them. When we got to the Civil War we learned Dixieland first (of course being a Southern state) and then The Battle Hymn of the Republic as the Union troops' song. We also sang America the Beautiful and God Bless America . There was also a funny song about , "eatin' goober peas" that made me laugh everytime we sang it. That went, "peas, peas, peas, peas eatin' goober peas. My goodness how delicious eatin' goober peas." That was also a Confederate songl. Goober peas are boiled peanuts which are cultivated in the South. The National Anthem always chokes me up every single time I hear it. I confess that I struggle a lot with the corruption in our government and the stranglehold corporations , especially pharmaceutical, have over our politicians and I feel very depressed and concerned for the future of our republic that so many have bravely fought and died for. My own family have been in all branches of the military since WW2 with my grandfather fighting and being wounded in Europe before being honorably discharged and being sent back home to the states to my grandma and their children. He loved to show his scar from the bullet and was such a proud patriot and loved this country so much. No matter how far this country strays or how troubled the times, the national anthem always brings me to tears and gives me the hope that we, as Americans, can get through this. We have been through many perilous fights and our flag still waves over the land of the free and the home of the brave. God bless America! 🇺🇸
No one could narrate like Paul Harvey, hey? (And now I'll tell you rest of the story) Hearing this always brings emotions up for me. It gives people from other countries an insight as to why Americans are so patriotic towards 'Old Glory'.(another name for the Stars and Stripes) Although patriotism is being attacked all over the world right now, I believe more people will wake up and realize they need to stand up for their rights and appreciate their countries, not let them be destroyed right under their noses. Nothing will change if WE don't change.

They'd been around the western hemisphere taking control of countries and claiming them as their own. This was there biggest pill for them to swallow. The fact that most patriots came from parts of the UK where they had been treated like peons for centuries, came to the Americas to get away from English rule, made them all the more determined to rid themselves of that monarchy forever. Speaking for myself, I'm grateful for every patriot in America at that time.

We had to argue about it for a while. The union song was a hymn - The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Written by a Southerner, while the Confederacy used the song Dixie which was originally written by a Northerner. We’re just weird like that.
Can you imagine when Francis Scott Key was informed that he would be the one to negotiate the freedom of prisoners..He was probably in his 20's.. Scared out of his mind.. Just that in itself makes me say what an incredible person he is. God bless and peace in the hearts of all.
I am an American and a 30-year veteran of the United States Air Force. I'm grateful British people would even care to watch this. I'm also very grateful to Mikey for looking up the actual historical facts and pointing out the glaring and ridiculous inaccuracies of this video, e.g., the United States of America had already won independence and was no longer "the colonies," Mikey is a man after my own heart with respect to presenting things historically accurate (I appreciate that he didn't also point out the inappropriate depictions of Lord Nelson as he was not involved in this conflict, and even as an American I consider it disrespectful to include such renderings as a part of this story--Lord Nelson's accomplishments far outweighed those in the War of 1812). The story of the Star Spangled Banner is a great story, and it pains me that the story is sullied in this video by gross historical embellishments and inaccuracies, and numerous grammatical and spelling errors. God bless America, and God save King Charles III (we lived in England for a brief period during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, and although I am not an advocate of the institutions of monarchies, Queen Elizabeth was an amazing woman and monarch; not being familiar with all British traditions and conventions, I hope it's not inappropriate for me to add, God rest the soul of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II).

Glad you pointed out some of the inconsistencies in this version! Not sure where you’re headed in the US, but if you ever go to Baltimore (not far from DC) Ft McHenry is worth a stop.
You can still see that flag in the Smithsonian museum, on the National Mall. They have restored it, it is still shell pocked and delicate, but it is the original Star Spangled Banner. It still makes me cry.

The flag is in The Smithsonian!!! What most do not know is that if Ft. Mc Henry had actually fallen, The States would have been split in two---much like what Gen. Sherman did to the South during the Civil War. It would have been extremely hard for us to survive. The War of 1812 basically ended in a tie. It did not become the National Anthem until the 1931. But, this incident is also why the USA does not bow our flag like others in ceremonies, etc. Sometimes we squabble about our country alot. But, we do have principles that are above all of that regardless of race, religion, politics, gender, or nationality. The anthem for the northern states during the civil war was 'Glory Hallelujah', for the southern states their song was 'I wish I was in Dixie'. My great grandfather served the southern states my wife's great grandfather served the northern states. they faced each other in the battle of Antietam which is why my wife and I got married, so we could keep the fight going. Other than that the USA never had a national anthem until the one we have now
Slavery filled the earth through serfdom and trade, but the flag being lowered, meant the Americans on land, were surrendering and were returning back to slavery under king George. But they had a taste of freedom and were never going to be slaves to any monarch, ever again. Though, the Star Spangled Banner is uniquely the American anthem, its truths are universal, meaning that it is humanity's anthem and why those who are drawn to the truth of freedom at all cost, bravely lay down their lives for it, so that others could immigrate here and above all other nations, finally have freedom. And think of how freedom traveled around the world, because America was free and helping others to be free. Americans have many times, in many battles, held other nation's flags high, so their lands too can be free, by the sacrifices of the brave. 🇺🇸
I am 42 years old and I was born and raised in the U.S.A. and I've always loved our national. With that being said I was never taught about the story behind it, and most people I know had no clue about the back story of it. It was about 9 months ago when I first saw this video. Like I tell my kids, never believe everything you come across on the Internet. So I did my own research and found it was mostly true, embellished a bit but still not far from the truth. That pic you showed was so memorable that we made sure it lived on forever. Today if you visit Arlington national cemetery those 6 men are lifting the flag in a bronze memorial to Iwo Jima. It is just one of many memorials on site. As a 20 year navy veteran I try to make it out there every year to celebrate Memorial Day.
Who would F king care if you believe the story or not. The fact that many people died fighting under that flag while fighting for freedom of not only America but also of other countries around the world makes this flag precious. When you and your country fall into despair and wish for assistance then this flag will be the most precious thing you wish to see coming to your rescue. So F off if you are bothered by the story.
"Hail, Columbia" served as National Anthem purpose at official functions for most of the 19th century. "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", whose melody is identical to "God Save the King", the United Kingdom's national anthem, also served as a de facto national anthem.

My 6th times great grandfather was a Colonel in the revolutionary War. He was also a friend of Gorge Washington. I am very proud of this country and what we fought for. Or should I say, What my grandfather fought and bled for.

Y’all should watch Whitney Houston singing the National anthem at the 1991 super bowl in Tampa, Florida one of the two best performances ever in my opinion the other being by a country singer Chris Stapleton also at a Super Bowl - two gorgeous performances I believe y’all would enjoy throughly.
