If you’re at a Mexican restaurant that doesn’t have complimentary chips and salsa, it’s either Michelin Star-rated, or they’re trying their best to not go under.

If it's not free on the table I will never return no matter how good the food is. I feel the same about restaurants with a 'bread program' that wants to charge for rolls. Nope!!

San Antonio might be considered the epicenter of Tex-Mex cuisine, although the farther south you go (i.e., closer to Mexico) the more "authentic" the Mexican food can be. With all its charm, people sometimes forget that San Antonio is also a large city, larger than Dallas. It's also a tourist area, so places like the Riverwalk, although a must-see, can be pricey.
@BTinSF
@BTinSF 8 месяцев назад
I would point out that Mexico is a very large country and the "authentic Mexican" food you might get close to the border will be "authentic Chihuahuan" or "authentic Sonoran" food not representative of all of Mexico. I live 40 miles north of the border in Arizona and the food around here as well as across the border in Nogales, Sonora is quite different from, say, what you might get along the Mexican Pacific coast or in Yucatan or even Mexico City. That's one thing I like about California is that there are immigrants there from pretty much all over Mexico and Central America and lots of them run restaurants so the "Mexican food" is much more varied than what you find actually close to the border.

It is absolutely worth it to take a river boat around for a tour. It's interesting and informative. I would recommend having drinks on the Riverwalk and having dinner at MI Tierra. Those places on the Riverwalk really are for the tourists. I'm not saying they're not good. But there is much better at Market Square which is still downtown just not on the river. If you absolutely have to go to a restaurant on the Riverwalk then go to Casa Rio. This was the first restaurant on the Riverwalk and has been around since the 1940s.

I have been to Rita's many times. It's not really "great" food. It's decent. You go to Rita's mostly for the atmosphere. Having said that, for you first foray into San Antonio Riverwalk, they're a solid choice. Chips and salsa are almost always free at every restaurant. Usually you'll get chips and red tomato based salsa and green tomatillo based salsa. Queso or cheese sauce is usually available at an additional fee. Rita's does have daqueries.

Almost all major restaurants have their menu online which gives a brief description of what each food is (what it contains and how it is cooked). For Tex Mex, especially, you might want to look up anything you think looks interesting to judge its spice level. It is nice for people to recommend things, but everyone's taste is different.

Yes the ride on the riverwalk is great. There is nothing like the sound of a sizzling fajita. You don’t have to put the Spanish rice on a fajita. Sour cream helps cool down the heat in your mouth. I sometimes make quesadillas at home for a snack.

If you order something like nachos off the menu (like from the appetizer section) then you pay for it. I’ve never been to a Mexican restaurant where you paid for chips & salsa, and often they bring several kinds of salsa or pico de gallo for you. Pico is my fave! And if you eat all the chips before your food comes out, you can ask for more and they’ll bring you more. Other restaurants will bring you bread or dinner rolls with whipped butter, so be careful not to fill up on those before you eat!

Sadly they just call plain tortilla chips "nachos" in the UK. I doubt most of them have ever had actual decent nachos.

May I suggest that you order different types of beans so you can taste the three most popular? Refried beans, charro beans and borracho beans. Also, fajitas are supposed to be only filled slightly so you can wrap it. Try the beef, chicken and shrimp.

The Riverwalk isn't the best Tex-Mex in San Antonia. It is rather 'touristy'. Ergo the planetary sized Margarita. You will need to do this one now the H's have done it of course. The best red dipping sauces are a very suttle spicy. Not too much. After your half way through the chips, your mouth is now on fire, but for some reason, you love it. If they overdo the spice ,it's too hot, and you won't eat much of it. Some restaurants do a cold red sauce, and some heat the sauce up to a warm temp. Either way, if done right, it will be delicious!!❤

If you listen to anything, listen to this. All BBQ and TexMex restaurants are not equal. If you come to Texas, get recommendations for the restaurants you go to. Just like anywhere, there are good and bad places. Some of the worst BBQ and Texas Mex I have ever had was right here in Dallas. But also, the best I’ve had as well. Get beef fajitas, queso and frozen margarita, you won’t be sorry.
@Rose-z4h6k

Amen. There is some scary BBQ and TexMex out there. In my experience, the quality of Tex-Mex is inversely proportional to size of the margarita and the trendiness of the decor. Also, if the refritos and chorizo are vegan, run. My little neighborhood in DFW has great Puebla, Veracruz, and nortenos style Mexican places. But most of the Tex-Mex places are hideous. And we have an outbreak of establishments that come up with cute names for weird mixes of foods stuffed into way over priced tacos. They are great for the hipsters, tho'.

Hi guys! Chips and salsa are free. They are in San Antonio which is more Mex than Tex, a great town. There are places all over town that have great food. Ask a local and they can steer you to some of the mom and pop places. In Fort Worth I found, with the help of my Hispanic friends, some really small places that don't even have a sign, and the food is incredible! Of course, there are also the big chain restaurants like Chipotle, Pancho's, El Fenix and El Chico that have some passable stuff as well as numerous taco places. Another really good bet is to find Mexican food trucks. They often have some really good stuff. Hope Archie is doing well, you and Millie too, of course. Bye for now.

Here in north texas the usual is two enchiladas o. A llate, sometimes 3, and the salsa verde is normally spicy. Every once in a while you get a tomatillo sauce which is less spicy. The normal enchiladas here are: chicken, beef, or cheese. Chicken being shredded stewed chicken with sour cream sauce or salsa verde. Beef being ground beef usually with chili sauce. Cheese normally come wiyh onion mixed in and chili sauce on top. All three are served with beans and rice. That is the norm here. Of course there are variations offered.

Big Bend National Park is wonderful. If you’re going to Texas please go there. Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas…big cities like every other big city….and then a lot of nothing special. Unless you’re visiting friends or relatives I don’t get it. Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Michigan, Maine, Montana, Wyoming, California, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Tennessee, Kentucky, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Hawaii, Alaska…..every one of those far more beautiful and more interesting than Texas. Where you want to go can depend on an event or a time of year, as you are already figuring out, so now that you know you want to go to Texas in X month (May, I think), now search the other states as to, ‘what to do and see in Maine in May’. You can buy TexMex and Mexican food in any state.

I was born in South Texas and cut my teeth on Tex Mex cuisine. At 81/2, my family moved to Illinois and I was deprived of Mexican food for many years. There are states that sell Mexican food, many sell their version of Mexican food. For years I differentiated between Cal Mex & Tex Mex before the phrases came into common parlance. It’s really misleading to say that you can get Tex Mex in any state because I’ve lived and traveled in several where that’s just not true.

Chips and salsa are usually complimentary, though they do charge for other dips like queso (cheese)

I did my undergrad in east TN. There is fine food there too. Some of the best country hams you've ever eaten come out of Madisonville. Trout from a mountain stream, ramps and eggs, biscuits with fresh made blackberry jam, sautéed fiddleheads, pawpaws.... There's also some lovely scenery. I do love those mountains. Dogwoods and rhododendrons in the spring...

It doesn't have to be too spicy ;-) Last time was at the Riverwalk, in 2001, I ate at the English pub, ate fish and chips with a heavy Guiness ;-) In 2010 in Dallas, I had fish tacos in blue tortilla.

This really is no shade on Texas. I've spent quite a bit of time there and enjoyed it. But. I do find it interesting that so many RU-vid Brits visit Texas. I've traveled lots, both in the US and overseas, and I just have never heard anyone recommend Texas as a major tourist spot. California, New York, Florida - those seem to be the big tourist spots. But Beesley's - MAINE yes! It's truly the most beautiful place!

For reasons I don't fully understand, Texas seems to loom large in the imaginations of some folks from the UK and Europe.

I like beef fajitas but I also like chicken fajitas too. Not sure if he did, put you need to put the salsa on it. If you want to check out the rivers, there are some really nice ones between Austin & San Antonio in New Braunfels, Wimberley, and San Marcos. Some of the clearest water I've seen. I grew up around here & have lived here most of my life & I love it.

FOR TEETHING: Try giving the Baby (Still) Frozen Waffle Strips... They're still soft to chew and the cold eases the teething pain.

A lot of people don't think about California also having Mexican American food. They just don't call it Cal Mex. Lol Same with Arizona. But they don't call it Ari Mex. Lol😂

Ha I’ll always remember visiting the one Mexican restaurant in Northampton about 15 years ago (long defunct). It was like, everything LOOKED approximately right, but taste was not … quite… right. Not much flavor or spice.

Texas girl, here. San Antonio is one of my all-time favorite cities. The River Walk is beautiful in the spring. New Year’s Eve fireworks are amazing, if you go in winter.
