I live in the Appalachian Mountains. No way to cross but on the roads, which will be guarded by a lot of hyper-patriotic folk armed to the teeth. There's more thermal sights in civilian hands in West Virginia than in the Soviet military, I reckon. They'd probably do things like block the way at choke points, using their tractors to move large trees, and then sniping the enemy when they stop to remove the blockage. Stuff like that.

Armed civilians in the US are just as much as a threat if not more to a potential invading force that's for sure. It's kind of the same problem the US had in Afghanistan of not being able to tell who the enemy is, as it could potentially be anyone

@rovers141 Год назад
@@wiijjdog except there wouldn't be many, if any civilians in the open if China or Russia were invading, and if there were then they would take much more extreme measures than we or our allies did in middle east. Another difference is that we weren't there to invade, we were hunting. Meaning we allowed civilians to conduct their business as much as possible while focusing on hunting the Taliban or other terrorists, this allowed them to hide amongst civilians. An invasive force would take control of everything and everyone. We would all be killed or imprisoned, or they would impose some sort of extreme martial law to control civilians. But personally I think they would herd us all into prison camps. That's probably the smartest thing for them to do.

The B61 Mod-12 light tactical delivery bombs are being deployed to air bases in Germany and Turkey right now and will reach full strength in March rather than May or June. The US flew bombers of a type that carry ALCM missiles over southern Germany where they could be spotted by passengers on Swissair flights. Not sure the planes had a load of missiles, but it still sends a message. The US has also had conspicuous missile drills since last spring. Meanwhile in Russia they talk about fantasy weapons on talk shows and release ten year old animations about weapons that likely do not exist. Living in Atlanta, EVERYONE has access to a firearm. Most of my male friends hunt(over half of the females do as well) and own literal arsenals. Including multiple hunting rifles, sport and protection shotguns, a variety of handguns, and thousands of of rounds for all of them. In one municipality, Kennesaw, has a law on the books requiring every household legal to own one to have one. I wouldn’t want to try to invade the metro area. Then you would see just how many well armed citizens that own 4 wheel drives, dirt bikes and quad runners there really are!!
@danhollifield

It gets worse for any hypothetical attackers in the country's rural areas. Some farm families alone have enough hunting weaponry to outfit 20+ people with a sniper rifle, handgun, shotgun & ammo each. Not to mention a tractor and plow could throw up some fairly decent embankments to slow down invaders while the hunters/snipers take out enough of the invader's officers to disorganize them.

@ptournas Год назад
You're mistaken about that. 28 submarines were built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in WW2. The largest builders were the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine which built 79 submarines and Electric Boat (now General Dynamics) which built 74 in Groton, Connecticut. Other companies included Cramp Shipbuilder in Philadelphia, which built 12 and Mare Island Naval Shipyard near San Francisco which built 17.

@@salyluz6535 Yes, Portsmouth was the highest producer during WW2 and received a citation from the Navy for having the quickest turn around time from order to launch. One day in 1944 they launched 4 new subs, three of them simultaneously, a record that still holds today. Groton, however, holds the record for all time most submarines built. They started earlier than Portsmouth and several years ago the Navy changed the Portsmouth mission from building nuclear submarines to providing overhaul, repair and modernization of U.S. nuclear submarines.

Also even though I don't want a gun or own one but is some stuff went down like and invasion all I have to do is walk over to my next door neighbors'house or a short walk through the woods to my uncle's house and say "I need a gun and some ammo" to help defend my homeland. Plus we will form a citizen militia. Plus I live out in the sticks in the middle of nowhere. So I know every road, back dirt roads, trails, creeks, ponds, and lake within a 30 minute drive. The ending comment about how the confidence in our democracy is eroding was interesting. Currently we are in a culture war with the Liberals using Democracy to describe our Republic. Their end goal is the popular vote which is Mob Rule and would mean the end of America. We are a representative democratic republic which ensures that our vastly different populations and demographics are equally represented. Straight votes would mean that the cities would outvote the rural populations and that's not going to happen. Our culture war isn't much different from what's happening in GB right now.

In the Mexican-American War in the 1800s, Mexico’s army just got bogged down and stranded in North Mexico, while the US just sailed past them to make a successful amphibious invasion further south.

The draft ended in 1972. The authority for the government to induct ended in 1973 and registration with the Select Service System was suspended in 1975. The military in the US is for the most part voluntary with a few exceptions of those given the choice of jail or military service. The concept of mutual destruction has kept the major powers from using nuclear weapons. There is a very good novel called the last ship which explores the concept of mutual destruction due to use of nuclear weapons.

IF an invader were to actually land on the “soft underbelly” of the Gulf of Mexico Coast - if they manage to get past the military installations and the coastal redneck residents … and they can’t really utilize the roadways, which will also have a heavy presence of military and law enforcement personnel aiding in defense and evacuation… So the invader tries to move overland off-road - and guess what ? They’ll be trying to make their way through *alligator infested bayous and swamps*… oh, and gators also love ponds, creeks, rivers, golf-course water hazards… and sometimes swimming pools. For a few hundred miles heading northward, any suitable fresh body of water might just have an unpleasant hungry surprise waiting for a snack. -- and all the while, armed backwoods guys and gals (who had refused to evacuate) will take shots at at the invaders at every opportunity. Oh… and rednecks and alligators are just 2 of the lethal species ! How about cougars/panthers, black bears, snapping turtles, feral pigs, wild boars, multiple species of venomous snakes, same with aggressive venomous fish, nasty dangerous spiders, ticks that carry Lyme disease, and so much more. Rednecks ain’t the only human hazard either - nearer to the towns/cities, that pretty little church-going southern belle woman wearing the pink twin-set sweater and pearls ? I’ve seen her at the gun range mealing out the paper man-silhouette target’s center-of-mass and head with her pink handgun. (True story - watching that lady’s accuracy was impressive lol)
