Both George and Elvin are incredible showmen. On a sweeter more brotherly note. Elvin Bishop helped Jerry Garcia come back from his stroke. Garcia was really discouraged. Elvin put in the time and effort to help Jerry Garcia heal. "You can, and you will play guitar again, I'm going to stay here, and help you." That's brotherly love.

I have a George Thorogood story from back in the day. A few weeks or months after George Thorogood's second album came out; so around late 1978 or early 1979, I saw George and the Destroyers play at a small country and western music club; the Palomino Club, in North Hollywood, CA. This place had been around since sometime in 1940's and I think it lasted until the mid 1990's. You were far more likely to see someone like Waylon Jennings, or any of the country music outlaw crowd, than any rock n' roller at the Palomino around this time. I wasn't old enough to purchase alcohol yet, but I had a fake I.D. and I had got one for a young women I was dating at the time. (Don't do this kids as it is illegal. Do as I say, not as I do.) I had used this card at least half a dozen times with no problems, but the Palomino's two doorman/bouncers spotted it right off. I'm 6 ft.2, but these bouncers made me feel like I was 5 ft. 2". These guys were huge, maybe 6 or 7 inches taller than me and they each had at least 150 pounds on me. One of the doorman looked at my I.D. then showed it to the other one, and then they both laughed and one of them said, "I guess he's tall enough to drink." They didn't even look at my girlfriend's fake I.D. when they realized she was with me. So what does this have to do with George Thorogood? Both Jessica and I had a beer or two before the show started. I don't remember if there was an opening act or we just had to wait a long time, but just before George went on to do his set I decided to use the men's room so I wouldn't have to do so while he was playing. When I walked into the men's room, George Thorogood was standing in line to the urinals, directly in front of me. Now, I don't think I would have recognized George Thorogood just from seeing the back of his head. However, I knew it was George because he was clutching his Gibson ES-125 with his left arm against his body. As I was thinking to myself; "There's something you don't see everyday, a guy going to take piss and taking his guitar with him" when someone who was leaving the men's room stopped, looked straight at George and said, "George, what are doing in here? I mean, I know what your doing in here, but doesn't the club have bathrooms backstage?" George replied that the toilette backstage was cracked and overflowing at the same time, his band was setting up and he didn't want to leave "his baby" unattended. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen at or before a show. George looked awkward as hell, trying to protect his guitar as he had to pull it behind his back, while continuing to hold it by the neck with his left hand, when he got to front of the line. I suppose he had to do the same thing when he washed his hands. Whoever was controlling the club's stage lights must have seen George go into the men's room, because when he stepped outside they put a spotlight right on him. I remember this because I walked out right behind George and the light was in my eyes. George held his right hand in front of his eyes so he could orient himself and see which way to get through to the stage. The place was packed so he had to navigate his way around people and a few tables. Jessica saw me cut to George's left to get back to our table. For a moment it must have looked like George and I were standing side by side, even though he was heading towards the stage and I was cutting away from it. When I got back and sat down Jessica said to me, "I saw you standing next to George Thorogood. Do you know him? Did you go backstage right now?" Now there were a number of things I might have said to Jessica that sounded cool, but they would have been lies so I told her the truth instead. She couldn't stop laughing after I told her. I think George was halfway through playing his opening number; House of Blue Lights I believe, before she settled down. It was a great show, by the way, but very, very loud. If anyone ever actually could have an amp go to 11, it was George Thorogood that night.

Worked crew once on George’s show in 80’s. He didn’t make the sound check, I played it for him with his band. Fun, and the rig had that exact tone of his even in my own hands. I told him later, just gave me a confused, slightly inebriated look lol. A silly story indeed. Ahhhh, the 80’s

Yes, George is a great storyteller. And it's not that there was really much of a story. He just was a master at creating an ambiance, an anticipation. By the end of the tune you don't even care, the journey and the feeling were a blast and you realize, Hey, that was the whole point in the first place.

Nice analysis Fil. In the video, George mentions Hound Dog Taylor😃 Early in his career, George was a roadie for Hound Dog Taylor. George was based in Boston in the late '70s, and I remember seeing him quite a few times in small clubs in Boston and Cambridge (in and around Harvard Square). You should do an analysis of Hound Dog Taylor. He was a Chicago blues guitarist, and was known for his slide work. He played Japanese Teisco guitars😃 Hound Dog was elected to the Blues HOF in '84. There are half a dozen or so videos on RU-vid of him playing live, but unfortunately the video quality is not very good.

This one of the best nights of my life! Every time i hear 'I Fooled Around And Fell In Love', it brings me back to that night , @ A fabulous club in Cicero, Illinois Called 'The Black Night' and Elvin Bishop! My 30th birthday, was even better, 3 different parties, my youngest brother had just gotten out of The Marines and brought another Marine with him, Gino Ferrari, from Pennsylvania, he stayed @ my parents house with my brother, i dated him the whole time he was here, he asked my brother, if he could take me out, lol! He said, why you asking me, i'm not her keeper, ask her, he was younger than me, he was so sweet, but @ the time, i was in to older guys, i told him that, he was disappointed, he went back home met a girl, got married and had 3 sons, and named one after my brother... One of my all time favorite musical entertainers...Elvin Bishop is an old Sacramento favorite. He was and still is all around like a cheap suit. I must have seen him well over 2 dozen times. My friends and I met him at Crabshaws Corner (named after him) social club/bar. We went in for a beer on an exceptionally hot summer day. A guy in coveralls and a farmer's hat came over to say howdy. We bought him a couple beers as I recall. We did not recognize him. He was just a nice guy in a bar who told great stories. Last time I saw Elvin on stage was at Armadillo Willy's. Hell of a nice guy with a hell of a talent. He also tells a mean story, often in his songs. I last saw George Thorogood opening for Mr B.B.King. Good performance, but over shadowed by B.B. of course, THE KING.

Been working on the 1966 John Lee Hooker version with help from my gee-tar teacher on Zoom. He pointed out that John Lee Hooker version of this song (and other songs he plays), he avoids the 12 bar (or 8, 16, etc.) format and tends to change when it feels right for him. The band, when he used one, had to follow him. It sounds great when he does it as it’s more organic, less formulaic. It seems Thorogood does this too, as you pointed out. Thorogood’s version of “Who Do You Love?” is smashing, too. Thanks for the video!

The story at the beginning, that you cut out, isn’t actually George’s own creation. It’s another John Lee Hooker song, House Rent Blues. George weaves the two songs together perfectly.

Yes, props to the Black Chicago bluesman who are referenced, indeed, copied, and never received the credits or the royalties. The Stones, Thorogood and Bishop all owe their careers to the original American musicians who kept blues alive in small venues during racist repression. And further, they would never risk their lives by mingling with a white audience, which Bishop has the freedom to do.

Watching Bishop made me think of a documentary that I saw about the great Blues artist Robert Johnson. You have to remember, no one, until Johnson, played with a slide and also would wrap their thumb around the neck to play the bass line also. They say that if Robert caught you studying his style that he would turn his back to you or quit playing altogether. The docu also mentioned that he strung an extra string onto his guitar, so that it had seven strings instead of six. We have all heard the basic blues stuff a million times, but no one had heard before Robert Johnson. Let that sink in. He inspired Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, John Legend, and countless others. I guess that you could also say that he was the founding member of the '27 Club'. Would love to hear your thoughts on Johnson. Netflix has a good documentary on him right now. I'm also including a link to one of Johnson's 29 tracks that is left of his legacy. That's it, we just have 29 examples of his genius. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yd60nI4sa9A.html

Loads of guys used bottleneck before RJ. Sonhouse for example
@shannonmccullough8324

@@mikeroberts510 , yes, but no one used their thumb over the top of the neck at the same time. Johnson's fingers were extremely long and he could do things that no one had seen, yet. When Sonhouse saw Johnson play, he couldn't believe what he was seeing. He had seen Johnson play 18 months before and he told him to quit making noise. Johnson found a mentor and practiced for a year and a half and the results are legend. When people heard Johnson, they thought that there were two players.

Very very cool! Back in the 70’s and 80’s I loved hearing GT on the radio. Great analysis as always Fil! Especially liked how you were describing GT technique. This would have been a great show to catch. I saw John Kay and Steppenwolf in a smaller venue like this back in 80’s and it was killer!
