Yet another National Treasure of the UK, and adored by people worldwide is Julie Andrews. And the music of Richard Rogers, and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein ll are so magical, put together with Julie's singing, and we have music so epic it will last forever. I remember in 1965 I was so mesmerized by the songs of "Sound of Music", I never get tired of hearing them.

Amazing singer. No change of color throughout her range, perfect diction, great phrasing and breath control. People often say that singers use an American accent, but she sounds quite English to me, as is only right. And she makes it look so easy. And she's connecting to the audience.

It should only take a few notes for anyone watching to realize they are watching greatness, whether they previously heard of Julie Andrews or the Sound of Music, or not. Her vocal range was amazing. She should have been cast in the Camelot & My Fair Lady films - she nailed the theater versions, but Hollywood wanted movie stars who either had to be dubbed (Audrey Hepburn) or weren't great singers (Vanessa Redgrave). They gave wonderful acting performances but Julie had both the acting & singing talent. Her astounding range is on full display & perhaps best seen in Victor/Victoria, a film where she sings as a female impersonator, hitting deep & high notes effortlessly. Thanks for showcasing Julie Fil - I gotta go dig out my musical soundtrack vinyls to relive those great performances. Cheers!

While Julie was not offered MFL, she WAS offered Camelot according to Julie. Because of all the “kerfluffel” over her not being chosen for MFL, Julie was concerned that if she accepted the role of Guinevere, it might seem like sour grapes or an “up yours” so she turned it down to avoid any repercussions or more Hollywood pettiness.

I was 8 yo and mom and dad took us 5 kids to see “The Sound of Music”. I didn’t really understand the whole story and the era at the time. Over the years I understood everything, I grew to love the story and music. Now, fast forward to late December of last year. I bought mom a DVD player and videos, she was 98 and in a nursing home, one of the movies was TSoM. Unfortunately I’d couldn’t get everything hooked up and working yhat day, two days later mom passed away on December 31. The movies I got for mom I gave to the nursing home hoping that the residents will enjoy them. Fiddler on the Roof,, My Fair Lady, The Music Man, The African Queen, The Ghost and Mrs. Murr and of course The Sound of Music. I had tears in my eyes giving them away and was choked-up I could hardly talk. But I’m going to pick up The Sound of Music and keep it. Thanks Fil!!!! Funnily enough, since she is classically trained, the entire medley is nothing for her. However, what is amazing, is how she phrases her entire piece. No one has that clear diction and what you say her "tonal consistency" as Julie. Listen to her singing Sleigh Ride from her 1991 and do a high A with incredible ease. Or her singing "This is My Beloved" from her 1977 live Japanese concert show. Finally her singing Love is Where you Find it from her radio show. My childhood, too...my dad had all the great musical albums and I had them all memorized! 'My Fair Lady' was my own favorite, but loved Julie Andrews in everything she did. I started being happy as soon as I saw her name, have been hoping for this since the Petula Clark one. Thanks for explaining what made her so amazing in voice and life!

A heart felt thank-you for this choice. There are a lot of 'vocal coaches' out there doing this that somehow have missed this classic broadway voice. I am going to suggest you go the opposite direction in the same genre. What makes Carol Channing or Ethel Merman, Zero Mostel, Anthony Newly, Elaine Stritch etc so incredibly good doing the same thing, with are very unconventional and virtually untrained voices. Again, a lot of us who could not pinpoint what Andrews was doing, are grateful you could

Of Eliza Dolittle, "It is the definitive role for a woman in the musical theater," Julie Andrews told The New York Times in 1993. "It's terribly demanding. You're a screaming cockney girl to start, with all those rage-filled songs, followed almost immediately by pure singing, followed almost immediately by long scenes of acting. Maria Callas came backstage once and said she couldn't believe we did eight performances a week.”

What is truly amazing about that lady is that even after all these years and that video being reproduced countless times you can still see the the kindness and the joy that emanates from her very soul and out through her eyes when they do a closeup of her face! THAT is what so many modern singers and actors have lost, the honesty and joy of who they are and what they do! There are some still but not like the old entertainers! This lady could sing an instruction manual and make it sound like a concert!

You never cease to amaze me with your ability to see and hear everything in a song then have the ability to break it down and explain it so that even those unfamiliar with music can understand. On top of all that, you also seem to get better and better. Dang, Fil! Your talents go way beyond music. Thanks for all the work you put into each and every video. The poem by the WWII fighter pilot, John Gillespie Magee "High Flight" has a verse in it where he wrote "Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things". Magee's poem was composed in 1941 and he sent a copy to his mother a few months before he died in a mid-air collision. The song has some eerie parallels to "I could have danced all night", from "The Sound of Music". In his poem he "danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings". In Julie Andrew's song she "did a thousand things".

IN THE 60'S THAT POEM WAS READ ON TV AS A SHORT "COMMERCIAL". THEY SHOWED FILM FOOTAGE OF AN AIRPLANE IN THE SKY, THE NARRATOR READ THAT POEM WITH GREAT FEELING AND "TOUCH THE FACE OF GOD". WOW. I'M SO THANKFUL I HEARD IT BACK THEN. NOW IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SHOWN. GENERATIONS HAVE MISSED SO MUCH BEAUTY.

I had the privilege of actually meeting Julie Andrews when working for TSA. I did a private screening for her at Dulles Airport. She was so humble & generous with her time. I of course was awestruck & she talked with me as if I was a friend. I hated that job‼️‼️That 1 chance meeting made it all worthwhile. I absolutely CANNOT say that for a lot of the other “famous” people I encountered. There were so many.

I remember this from the film when I was growing up. Songs were sung without wavering notes and the clearest of annunciation of each word. I hope the younger generation learns from old musical performances.Singers , in those days , often covered a range of three octaves. Roy Orbison up to four. I might sound like an old geezer but I miss the singers could do this today. Your comments about talent, practice and hard work was employed. Linda Ronstadt is an ideal example of this.

The Sound of Music, to me, is a masterpiece of performance, both in the character and in her musical performance. I don't watch it too often (intentionally), but when I do it never disappoints. The entire cast was brilliantly assembled and directed to be sure, but this is a review of Julie Andrews' vocal talent. Thank you, Fil!

I was 7 years old when my mother took my sister and I to see The sound of Music. I was enthralled from the opening sequence with Julie singing on the lush Green mountain top. Great score by Rodgers and Hammerstein and great performance by Julie Andrews. In this video on the ending climax of I could have danced all night, when she hit those last two notes on the words "all night", they were so high, the screen on my phone cracked 😂 Seriously though, another great analysis by Fil, and another great artist for us all to enjoy.
