British guitarist analyses Redbone's 'Come and get your love' live in 1974! 

Props to Redbone for Including their native ceremonial dance in the intro of this song which was such a big hit at the time.

Really wish these guys would be recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They so deserve it. Lolly's gone, but I'd love to see Pat accepting the induction. I've been a fan for decades. Thank you, Fil, for your thoughtful observations. Well done!

I love the fact that much of your audience is near my age (60). You are allowing us to relive our youth and all those good times. I think that the 70's created some of the best and unique music. Everyone was trying to develop a unique sound, not just copying everyone else. Musicianship was also a goal and this is something you continue to express and explain. Thanks again for another great evening (for me at least). One last thought, I grew up in New Mexico (USA), the land of the three cultures: cowboy (Anglo), conquistadors (Hispanics, Mexicans and Latinos), and the Indian nations (23 nations). It is and was a great place to live.

Thank you for such an in-depth review. This is the reason we liked European audiences more than American. When we toured Europe in 1973, our fans would come backstage and pick apart all our songs like you. Very knowledgable people...And your review of my old Bosses version of "Unchained Melody" was spot on!...

I listened to this so many years ago but had no idea who was singing. It was a song that everyone knew the chorus to and would sing along with. I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know much about the group. I appreciate the knowledge that you give everyone Fil.

I'm thinking that Fil is an old soul in a young man who has a great appreciation/passion for searching out and sharing treasures/gems!

So cool that Fil is covering this band, a very pleasant surprise. The Native American contribution to American music is greatly under appreciated. African Americans and native Americans have had a long cultural association due to their shared oppression and this extended to music. Significant historical music figures such as Delta Blues musician Charlie Patton and Jimi Hendrix, just to name a couple, had Native American ancestry.

Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert were an absolute weekend staple in my home. After the parents went to bed of course. Great time to be alive!

Unfortunately, I was not aware that Redbone was a Native American band until I saw their video. Now, I don't think I have any Native American blood in me, I'm predominantly Irish, but I do love the Native American culture!! ❤️🥰 Keep it up, Redbone!

Can you imagine an act like this making it today? What An exciting and wonderful diverse musical environment existed in 1974. Midnight Special was the US version of Top of the Pops and was on Friday nights. Great job Fil

Great memories for us old folks

Having Cherokee blood flowing through my veins, I approve of this video :-) My grandmother was Cherokee from the Eastern Band of Cherokee's. Went to many family reunions back in the 70's - 80's with her and my father on the Cherokee reservation in western NC, they treated her like a queen!!! (They treated all the elders like queens and kings... we might could learn a thing or two from them... :-) Enjoyed this one Mr Fil, Thank you!!!

I so remember this song. To me this is a summer song, Summer of ‘74. I was 17, working on the Mississippi River on a tug. Working in the heat of the summer, but being young and strong and it didn’t bother me that much. This reminds me of the joy of getting off on a Friday afternoon, my friends getting together at 9 O’Clock, and going out till 3am. What a great moment in my life.

Thank you for reviewing one of my favorite bands of all time. Their music was nothing short of fantastic as most people don't realize what great musicians they were. Wovoka was a standout album, and I'd put it up against a lot of other so called "hit records" of the day. I actually was so enamored with the album and the look of that red Telecaster Deluxe that Lolli played, that I had the local music store order one for me. Got to see them live and talk to them. Great memories, great band, great music. Thank you!

Buffy Saints Marie an Indigenous Canadian-American singer-songwriter, musician, Oscar-winning composer, visual artist, educator, pacifist, and social activist. is another one that got her start in the 1960's and still active. thanks Fil.

Aww, jeez, dude! This is such a blast from the past for me! In the mid-70s I lived in a nowhere town in central Texas. About 30 miles from my nowhere town was a nowhere "city'. But there was a joint where they had a lighted (about 20 years later to be called a disco) floor. There was a hired drummer on a pedestal to ape the drum track for whatever song was being played. Good memories of my friends back then!

I knew the dancer/guitar player for many years.. he was my next door neighbor.. he taught me how to play this song when I was 14. I believe he strung his guitar with 13s .. Impossible for me to play his guitar back then..

I remember this and Witch Queen of New orleans, neither one had any indication that they are native band. Did not realize it until this show. Their song We were all wounded at Wounded Knee, seems to be the only native related song. Their songs were catchy. Loved Midnight Special

This was on the radio a lot when it came out but I had no idea they were aboriginal. That’s cool! They didn’t play that intro on the radio to my recollection.

I grew up in this era, never owned the album but listen to this song over and over on the radio. Couple years ago the wife and I were traveling and this song came on. I started singing along, wife said ..what are you singing?? I responded “strumming guitar love” for 30yrs I thought it was strumming guitar love !!

I remember this episode of The Midnight Special! I got to see it! There were times when I was on the wrong side of my parents law and was in bedroom jail, (w/TV, phone, stereo). Not so bad!

I've never seen this and I did not know they were native American(American Indian). I was an M.P. in the U,S. Army in Frankfort, Germany at that time so I never heard it live so you are correct it does sound almost identical to the recording.

Your analysis on Redbone gave me a musician's viewpoint as to why the song had that effect on me back then and still does now. I appreciated your brilliant guitar demonstration of the riffs, chord variations and especially how singing the melody over the chords(in diminished to resolution chord patterns)makes a difference sound-wise. In 1972 I purchased an album titled Redbone Potlatch. I was intrigued by the naked intensity of Native American call and response, like blues and r'n'b only nine octaves higher (the vocals - animalistic and atmospheric because, you know, nature). I liked the album, I didn't love it. I was looking for something akin to a blend of Indian Soul and pop music. I do a very nice blend of Native American/blues and in Los Angeles it tends to scare folk because the vocals are quite high in register and quite loud because I have to sing loud to climb those high notes on the call and response. A year later Redbone dropped the Potlatch and had a hit song and I was happy for them. Actually the first Native American band to have a regional (some cities in the U.S.ofA.) "hit" as if that meant anything, really, in the infinite realm of music - and I forget the song - was an all-girl band named Fanny, a very soulful rock band with a dash of Motown. Plus they were quite sexy. History!

It is really hard to feel bad when this song is playing and as always, great analysis.

Gonna show my age here Fil! Was a kid when song made it on charts and was played on KTAC 85 radio in Tacoma Washington. Never stopped liking the song or band! You give it a whole "new" dimension! Way past excellent anayses!

When you picked up your Stratocaster the first cord reminded me of the Yardbirds in 1965 with For Your Love. Could be a good one to do a show on. Also, back in the mid 70’s I had a chance to go to a number of tapings of Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack as the host - great radio character in Los Angeles on KDAY 1600. I was an on air person at another station and could call production staff for passes any time. Thanks for the memories. By the way, I just noticed/remembered that you did the Yardbirds about 6 months ago and I gave it a thumbs up back then.

Fil, I heard an analysis of this song years ago in which mention was made of the unique hi-hat style of this drummer. He supposedly is bouncing his left stick form the snare up to the UNDERSIDE of the hi-hat, creating an interesting quick succession of accents. Give it a peek. I have said for years, that if I ever got married, then this would be played as it is such an infectious and wonderful song. I would also have some Lou Christie as well, but it's unlikely to ever happen! I can remember back in 1971 how Redbone's "Witch Queen of New Orleans" with its great chugging beat, riffs and anthemic vocals had such an impact as it was a big hit in the UK.

Yeah this song for some reason has so much 70s vibe... and the way he sings is really unmatched by anyone. You can see in his expression the effort to produce each fragile bit of vocal sound...
