Yeah when you listen to Steel Panther, you can say what you want about their music, but have no doubts, these guys are top level musicians! I like how you said that if you sent them back to the 80's, they'd clean house. So true! And great to mention Winger. Those guys were top level musicians of the time. What’s great about 80’s Metal is it was fun. Bands like Motley Crue, Dokken, Poison, Van Halen, etc etc we’re there to entertain the masses. There was no deep seeded political or social message. It was about banging your head, playing excessively loud music with raunchy lyrics, and making your parents worry about the friends you were hanging out with. It was before the internet so there was still a level of mystique associated with being a rock star. And everyone played their own instruments and wrote their own songs (what a novel idea)! Glam metal is fun. Thank goodness for Steel Panther who some how are completely serious about the technique and craft involved with playing this type of music, while at the same time having a laugh about the audacity of the whole hair metal scene.

Russ Parrish (Satchel) is no joke as a guitarist. I have a good friend that went to GIT at the same time him and Paul Gilbert went there. He ran sound for them when they played in a band called The Electric Fence. A little side band they did while attending GIT. Sure wish I could have been there during that time. There is a video of Russ practicing scales and shapes on RU-vid during the time he was at GIT.

In the 80's most rockers seemed to think that if a guitarist didn't shred, then they sucked. I tried to tell them that players like Gilmour and Page were still awesome. Then in the 90's most rockers thought that if they even played a guitar solo it sucked. I tried to tell them that shred was still a viable tool. Things are better today, but you still have people who don't get it. It's all just tools we use to emote. The best players never even think about such things, they just play what they feel and what they like.

When speaking of his past bands, you didn't mention my favorite. Fight, was a Rob Halford fronted band that Russ played in for a short time. I saw them live in 1994. Into the pit is one of the best hard rock/ metal songs I know of. There's a vid here on YT from MTV unplugged that's killer. Rob was in his glory then. That whole album/CD was awesome. From here to Eternity was a ballad that has one of my all time favorite guitar solos in it. I think the album was called War of words or maybe just self titled "Fight" . ( I can't remember but definitely look into it. Great music) I think Russ only played on that 1 album then left the band. Edit "For all Eternity" not from here to Eternity. The MTV Unplugged vid is still up here. "It's Alright" was done acoustically but " Into the Pit was full electric and what a performance it was. Rob Halford was on fire as was Russ/Satchel and the whole band. Great energy and the sound was very good.

@@billpratt2274 they are a good part of why I am a Satchel fan. That line up of Fight was one of my favorite line ups ever. IMHO, on par with early VH . Something just meshed perfectly with all those guys. It's easy to see Halford really felt it too. He was truly unleashed there. I went to GIT in 93-94. (I believe Russ went there in the late 80s. ) There were bumper stickers around there n LA that said Russ Parish for President. I didn't know much of him until late 94 and after that I thought yeup. He's the man. When this CD came out it didn't get much air time. Grunge was the big thing and many hard rock stations felt it was a bit too heavy. Sad the timing wasn't right for this great music. Russ really seamed to add a dose of refinement to the mix. I don't feel Fight was the same without him. Edit Yeah, I agree. I like them much more than Priest.

Again, you have gone to the core of one of my eclectic tastes. I've always liked a bit of parody if it's relevant, and Steel Panther are the present day masters. As you say, these guys can't do what they do without supreme talent, as well as knowing what, and how far to send something up. I saw Flo and Eddy (ex Turtles, ex Mothers) do it in a couple of shows in Australia in 1971/'72. Mixing their own work, incorporating mimicry, satire and current affairs into thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining concerts. As for Satchel's , and the others that you mentioned, delay trickery, the first person I saw do that was Jimmy Page, at Zeppelin's Sydney concert, in 1972. The song was Dazed and Confused. There was way more naivety back then about production and gear, and whilst I had heard it on the record, Page's sorcery with the violin bow, delay, and showmanship looked like he was summoning notes from thin air. Peerless! Of course, I am familiar with whole Steel Panther concept, and though he's just a characterisation, a rumour that yourself and Satchel could be related, wouldn't be that hard to swallow. (Just kiddin".......)
@FloridaManRacer
@FloridaManRacer 4 года назад
If you break down what Satchel is actually doing here, he's actually created an Eruption counterpart for about the first minute to two minutes of the solo... The notes are different, but the stylistic composition is nearly spot on... long held note to start, into quick run, add bends (in a similar fashion to EVH in Eruption) into finger tap with bend at the end and so on. it's literally following those same cues at the same timings as Eruption, just as I stated before, with different notes being played...

Satchel aka Russ Parish was the guitarist for Rov Halford's FIGHT. they also played in Vegas as a live karaoke band called Metal Shop every Monday night. I was on stage with them and sang Balls to the Wall from Accept at the Imperial. He's been a monster player for decades.

Great job as usual, Fil. Your analyses are always interesting, educational and entertaining. A suggestion I have is to provide an analysis of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love." I hope you can work it in. Keep up the good work!

Agree. All jokes about the Band itself, he and his mates are very talented and experienced with their instruments! I’ve seen his RU-vid guitar instructions and is a very different person which highlights his showmanship on stage. Excellent stuff! Thx

I saw Atomic Punks at House of Blues at L.A. I still have pictures that Ralph took from stage with our camera and gave it back. I have close up picture of Ralph when he comes to ask can he borrow the camera and took pictures of audiece from stage. It was great gig. 😅😎🤘

I played in a JP trib at the same time he was in the punks. We played together a few times. The JP band I was in covered fight songs. We wouldn’t get the first couple chords into nailed to the gun or into the pit and he’d be front and center rocking hard. As you know he was one of the guitarists in fight with Halford. Satchel is super chill and he is really funny.

Great analysis of Satchel Fil, and a whole lot more. I did hear tons of Eddie Van Halen in there and others. I loved it, it's 80:s, glam, hair band, great old school stuff. Rock! ✌😃

I was a teen in the 80s and enjoyed metal and other genres, but especially metal. I got turned onto SP six or seven years ago and I got it. I was immediately hooked, and thought 'My God, he has all the riffs and runs, tone etc'. In my opinion he is a virtuoso. Like you pointed out, ability to play on this level with absolute precision such as he does will not happen in a few years. I saw SP about five years ago; their musicianship is phenomenal..these guys aren't messing around and I can guarantee you that if you happen to catch them live that his playing is so spot on and flawless that you will not believe your eyes nor ears!!

I love Steel Panther. I plan to see them live this Friday in Atlanta. I’ll be rocking and laughing my ass off. Especially when Satchel smells his shocker hand. 😂😂😂

Spot on analysis. The Steel Panther is a great band, first and foremost. Each member is a great musician. Combined, they light the stage on-fire, are the ultimate anti-PC band, and hark back to the great days of classic rock and roll.

Every time I hear the name Steel Panther I can’t help but think “Spinal Tap”. Satchel gets the satirical nature of Steel Panther and he embraces it with enthusiasm. He has also nailed some of EVH’s best licks. Heard some Vai in there as well.

Thank you Fil , I love Steel Panther, I saw them in Paris in July Bataclan (I'm French like you know now 😄) Satchel did the same solo again with the drums, watching him play hum😍in my opinion he's the best guitarist (and you) . I listening to def lepp, Kiss fan of Paul Stanley for many years , I don't think he does the same .

For some reason, this video just showed up in my feed. Its great to see someone recognize the talent of Satch. As someone who lived through the eighties as a guitar player I see his level of playing is as good as any of his contemporaries. Not only is his guitar playing superb, he is also a fantastic entertainer and is very funny.

Hehe, I was about to call you out for not mentioning Nuno Bettencourt in your list of influences, and then you say his name. Satchel is basically the combination of all my favorite 80's guitarists. He's really good.
