@FiatDuster Mick Taylor... "I just couldn't believe how bad the Stones sounded at the first rehearsals. Their timing was awful. They sounded like a typical bunch of guys in a garage... playing out of tune and too loudly. I thought, "How is it possible that this band can make hit records?"

FiatDuster, is that why his career just took off when he left? He was a great guitar player who had no song writing chops. Keith and Mick are the Stones. Twin brothers from different brothers. Greil Marcus called Gimme Shelter the greatest rock song ever. I loved the comment because when a major Stones fan asked me my fave song...it was Gimme Shelter....the best Mick Taylor was when he was given great material that he shined the brightest....

My favorite Rolling Stones song ever is "Can't you hear me knocking" the extended instrumental, the whole thing...It's all Mick Taylor, extended jam session the miraculously got caught on tape, and included on the album! From a different perspective, a bit later, my friend and I decided it would be a good idea to take our respective girlfriends to a nice night out on the town, so we got tickets to a Christmas/New Years performance of the Nutcracker in San Francisco. I asked a friend if we could borrow his car, a "rose-pink" Cadillac (!) and he agreed! It was awesome!!! When I was younger, when "Sticky Fingers" came out, I heard this song and had some (perhaps marginal) relation to it...the "Rose-Pink" Cadillac became a bit more significant... An analysis of "Can't you Hear Me Knocking" would be a treat to see/hear!

This is one of my favorites of theirs. I just about wore through the grooves playing the HotRocks album as a kid. Then I was privileged to finally see them in person on their Bridges to Babylon tour. It was a sold out show for months and then 2 days before the concert they opened additional seating on the wings of the stage because of their unique stage set up, which Mick & Keith kept coming out to play on. I was roughly 15 feet away from these guys as they performed. It was incredible. The baseline in Sympathy for the Devil you could feel down in your soul, as if it was coming from your own body, it was crazy and such an amazing experience (and there were no drugs or alcohol in my system for anyone reading this and wondering lol). Fil, I don't know why you keep listing yourself as just "British guitarist" when clearly you are a historian. Thanks for once again knocking it out of the park Fil.

This performance at the Marquee is among my favs. Captures the mystique of the stones at the time. Jagger as sleek as ever. Keith all unshaven and sweaty just slugging liquor straight from the bottle. Charlie on point and laying the foundation that Keith's bourbon powered rhythmic riff turbine tears to shreds. Bill as stoic as ever and on point. Taylor's melodic sensibilities being like sonic threads that hold it together yet embellish at the same time. Taylor's true masterpiece is 'Time Waits for No One' from It's Only Rock n' Roll. That soloing is uniquely badass

I know the focus here is on Mick Taylor, but just listen to the oh so subtle way Charlie and Bill get that great country rhythm moving.

Not many people mention that Jagger and Richards are actually swapping harmony parts. Richards actually sings the melody on "take me down" part, and Jagger is singing the harmony in a lower register. They then swap seamlessly later in the chorus.

The Mick Taylor Era of the Stones is unrivaled in rock history for excellence. The albums produced from this period are all legendary, not just good or acceptable. Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St., and Goats Head Soup. Just, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM. One after another album classics. I always loved Mick Taylor. And I dig your analysis videos of real musicians, Fil. Rock on with your bad self!

I’ve always appreciated The Stones and their country music sound. Jagger’s “chicken dance” really works with this song! Here is my favorite personnel of the group. Mick T did a great live lead/slide hybrid guitar solo on Love in Vain with his Les Paul. Thanks so much, Fil.

Some comments on your analysis and a few thoughts of mine: - great choice of song; it highlights Mick Taylor's brilliance - since there are 2 Micks in the band, you should make it clear which one you're talking about (younger people probably don't know the 'other' Mick) - the studio version of this song (on Sticky Fingers) has more of a country feel; in this one, Mick Taylor's playing reminds me of Duane Allman - it's the same period, and same guitar (Gibson SG) - It should be said this is a fantastic 100% live performance by all the Stones; the vocals by Mick and Keith are terrific - Being a guitar player myself, this version is incredibly inspirational, I've watched it hundreds of times - Mick Taylor is one of the greatest guitarists ever

Mick T actually toured with the Stones again in 2012-2013. He would come out as a special guest and only play a few songs - I think Midnight Rambler during the middle of the set and then Satisfaction at the end - but he was at all the shows on that tour. I think he also toured with Dylan in the '80s, along with playing on some studio tracks.

the stones need three live guitarists I think. so Keith and Wood can do their throwing riffs around, you can have a guitarist holding them together, because at this point there's simply no platform to the guitar live, like Keith used to do

I saw the stones in June 1972 Seattle. Keith when tuning, D and G strings I think, changed the wrong string. I had a hangover and that hurt. My sister had binoculars and could see Mick's eye make up.

I saw the Stones on this tour, and Taylor's slide solo on "Love in Vain" was exquisite! (Stevie Wonder warmed up. What a show!) To all fans: track down a copy of the solo album he did after he left the Stones -- sometimes called "Leather Jacket." There's a two part suite of fusion at the end that's fascinating stuff. Equal parts Zappa and Metheny, that ends with "Time Waits for No One." Gorgeous.

It’s fascinating the contributions and influence Brian Jones and Mick Taylor provided for this band over the years. Fortunately MT didn’t succumb to the drug use. His guitar playing however was superb and masterful at the tender young age of 20.
