Just a FYI - Ozzie and Harriet were huge in the US - Ozzie was a big band leader and Harriet the singer --- They had a big radio show with actors playing their kids but when they moved to TV they used their real children - Ricky and David - Ricky became huge in part to the TV show but also in part to the fact that he recorded with James Burton and James Kirkland ... in the studio and on the TV show.

My family sat around the TV and watched Ranch Party when I was a little child, just as Fil says. "Western" stuff was real big back then, from TV dramas to music like this, with the fringed costumes and the works. I always wondered what happened to the Collins Kids later on in life. They were stars on that show. Guess I could have looked that up in Wikipedia, lol, but it's interesting to see them again and be reminded how slick and professional they were.

Sadly Fil, the wonderful and beautiful Lorrie Collins passed away on August 4, 2018. She was 76. It is wonderful that you are paying tribute to the Collins Kids and their musical legacy. I believe they have more or less fallen into the rabbit hole. Lorrie was a wonderful and lovely singer. Larry Collins is an amazing guitarists whose guitar hero was Joe Maphis, and even got to play with him at a very early age. He is also a wonderful songwriter.

Joe Maphis was Larry's guitar mentor. Ranch Party hosted by Tex Ritter was the taped national syndicated show derived from the live Town Hall Party which aired live in Los Angeles. I believe they were taped in the same studio just different years. Southern California was big in country music in the 50s and 60s. Nashville was already starting to add strings for the metropolitan sound. Wynn Stewart and Buck Owens recorded at Capitol in LA instead of in Nashville and kept more creative control of their music.

We had Ozzie and Harriet on TV in the 50's in Australia. I first came across the Collins Kids about 30 plus years ago when I picked up their 45rpm Hop, Skip and Jump for 20c at an op shop. I bought it because I liked the label, it is a green octagon shape. Thought it was a child's record. How wrong was I! Back then you couldn't find any info on them. Now all their performances on Town Hall Party and Tex Ritters Ranch Party/Night? are on youtube. Love their versions of High School Confidental, I Got Stung, Johnny B Goode and Laurie's solos.

"The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" was indeed a huge hit TV sitcom in the 1950s-60s, featuring wisecracking Ricky before his singing career. Ricky's father Ozzie Nelson was a famous big-band leader in the swing era, and Ricky's mom Harriet Hillyard was the band vocalist. As big band music faded, they transitioned to TV. There's a third generation as Ricky's twin sons formed the band "Nelson" in the 1990s, and his daughter Tracy is a successful actress. BTW their mother Kristin Harmon was actor Mark Harmon's sister.

Lorrie married Johnny Cash manager when she was 17, against the advice and will of her parents, and everyone else..There was tension for a while.. She left the band and 15 year old Larry had the weight of the world on his shoulders to keep it all going and financially support a lot of people. He did so, with total greatness far beyond his years.. In a few years Lorrie cam back and they have jammed and gigged non-stop since.. Rocking for over 60 years together, no one else has done that have they?
@63DW89A
@63DW89A 4 года назад
@Michael Craig Lorrie actually married at age 16 on January 4, 1959, as she did not turn 17 until May. Lorrie's secret, sudden marriage to Stew Carnal makes no sense at all on the surface. Carnal was almost 20 years older than Lorrie, and on her wedding night Lorrie returned home to her family. Some sources say she waited "several days" to tell her family, but based on what I see on the "Collins Kids At Town Hall Part" DVD's Vol 1,2&3, I see no evidence of Lorrie telling her family about her marriage until late April 1959, as the April 4, 1959 show is a normal "Collins Kids" show. Suddenly, Larry appears alone at THP in May, 1959 and during one June, 1959 appearance. Lorrie appears with Larry on one June, 1959 appearance, but there does seem to be a bit of tension there. The rest of the 1959 performances seem fairly normal though. It seems Larry was working with Lorrie about 6 weeks after Lorrie's marriage was revealed, and she left home. However, Lorrie's parents would not speak to her for several years afterward. The THP DVD's are great, and during performances you can really see that Lorrie and Larry were close. Larry is often sneaking a kiss on Lorrie's cheek and it is obvious he adored his big sister. Her secret marriage, after revelation, and her suddenly leaving home, would naturally have devastated and hurt Larry. To his credit, the fact that Larry worked out his hurt feelings and was working with Lorrie in a matter of weeks shows that he could not turn his back on her, even if their parents did. In "Johnny Cash, The Life", author Robert Hilburn, reveals some intriguing information in chapters 6 thru 11. Cash first appeared on THP in December 1956, and he became friends with the Collins Family. Cash appeared on THP many times, and by 1957, he apparently became infatuated with then 15 year old Lorrie. He scheduled a December 1957 THP appearance just to let Lorrie know he was disappointed in her engagement to Ricky Nelson. The Collins Kids toured with Cash thru much of 1958 and Cash and Lorrie spent a lot of time together, which caused major concern in Cash's team because the "Jerry Lee Lewis marrying his 13 year old cousin" scandal broke that year. Hilburn interviewed Lorrie and she told him although she really cared for Cash, she refused to have an affair with him, because she was scared of their age difference, the effect it would have on everyone around and their careers, and also because she loved Johnny's little girls. Lorrie also told Hilburn that she "learned to love Stew" after they were married. When Lorrie's marriage became public, it totally derailed "The Collins Kids". Larry said that there were two movie deals, and more TV deals all in the works that instantly ended when Lorrie's marriage became public. Based on Hilburn's well researched and documented book, I think it was a case of a young 16 year old girl put into a situation she did not know how to handle, and an escape route via a marriage proposal by Carnal appeared. Marrying Carnal got the obsessed Cash off her back without upsetting the Collins Family income. 16 year old Lorrie could not realize the terrible effect the marriage would have on "The Collins Kids", and her family relationships. When a 16 year old girl elopes it is usually because she is crazy about the guy, or her home life is bad and marriage is an escape route. None if this is true in Lorrie's case, which is why her marriage to a guy 20 years older that she does not love makes no sense on the surface. This is only my opinion and based on my reading of Hilburn's book on Cash.

Can you imagine how heavy even one electric guitar would be for a 13 year old boy to dance around with, let alone two. He not only had a lot of energy, but a lot of full body strength, as well as stamina. And then there is the control necessary to be able to play correctly while holding this heavy double guitar and dancing around and watching for his cord or lead with the corner of his eye and instinct, while appearing not to have a care. That guitar probably weighed a quarter to a third of what he weighed. I could only barely lift that much of my weight, let alone walk, and let alone dance with it and play it with dexterity. He must have been very strong for his age, let alone full of life and energy. Or as the adults said of me when I was young, "full of piss and vinegar". 😁

@@kevinr.3542 Yes, definitely! And it would be interesting to see if, as I suspect, those early double necked guitars were actually heavier than their modern counterparts today. I bet they've taken some weight out of them over the decades. I'm sure they they didn't put ANY additional weight in, so any changes to weight, probably involved taking any weight out where they can without hurting anything. So who knows how heavy his guitar actually was, and whether it was balanced the same way it would be today? His was one of the very first ones. It might not feel right at all to a guitar player today. But there he jumping around with it like it's nothing.

Yeah except they were real musician, the only Partridge that was was David Cassidy and the only Monkee who was was Michael Nesmith. Neil Young played with the Monkees on occasion as did Steven Stills, who actually auditioned to become a permanent member but decided against it

Ozzie and Harriet was indeed a very popular program from 1952 - 1966. It is still the longest-running (live action) sit-com in American history, and second only to the Simpsons in number of episodes. It was one of several family sit-coms back then, but the unique thing about it was that the Nelsons were an actual family. Ozzie was a band leader beginning in the 20s and Harriet was his vocalist. Sons David and Ricky basically grew up on the show and when they got married, their wives joined the cast. Obviously, Ricky's musical career got a big boost from his doing a couple songs on the show, two or three times a year.

I was lucky enough to meet them 10 years ago and I'm annoyed because I should have brought my Collins Kids/Joe Maphis album to the show as I got their signatures on a piece of paper! On that album there are tunes from 1957 or 58 where Larry is playing Surf Guitar- amazing. I also told Lorrie that I could see why Ricky Nelson had loved her- I'm not normally that smooth but she was great! Larry said that original double neck guitar was made in late 1954 or early 1955 and they really weigh a ton- or about 24 pounds! Semie Moseley made him a new guitar and ordered him to go back to work about 30 years ago. Here is Larry with that newer guitar along with Deke Dickerson who plays a lookalike Mosrite doubleneck that was not made by him but one of his workers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d_ibben8B2I.html Here's a great little film on Semie Moseley- Mosrite guitars. It's very new and features Larry Collins, Deke Dickerson and the incredible Brian Lonbeck and others> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fcsnnFQSClQ.html

Larry told this story in an interview, when he was playing golf he saw this huge kinda wildish looking man standing under a tree up ahead. When he went forward, the man came straight to him and said " I'm Semie Moseley. I made this guitar for you, now get back to work" then he just walked off.

Sorry you never got to see Ozzie and Harriet. They were on Thursday nights and at the end of the show, Rick would always sing one of his songs. The songs were put into a video called "Ricky Nelson Sings". There's some real good extra stuff in it. The series itself was actually shot in their real family home in Glendale, a suburb of Los Angeles. Look up "Travelling Man" from the show. Ozzie added the views of the different countries, making it the first rock video ever.

Fil, check out "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet". They were the Nelsons. As in Ricky Nelson's parents. Rick performs his songs on many of these comedy programs. It ran on ABC in the U.S. from 1952 to 1966. Guitarist Burton is his lead player. "Stood Up", "Hello Mary Lou", "Travelin' Man", etc. - well filmed lip sync performances.
