Let us recognize the truth... These 2 fine folks are 2 of the greatest musicians of all time. They did not receive the recognition they well deserve. In our house we LOVE The Collins Kids TRUE TALENT
I totally agree! I can't believe I wasn't aware of them until earlier tonight when I stumbled upon some of their Ranch Party performances! I was deeply into rock 'n roll at age 5 in 1957 so, it's a shame I never saw them on TV back then! They were phenomenal! I'm blown away by Larry's guitar talent and Lorrie's singing was awesome! I was praying the grooves off of The Everly Brothers' 'Wake Up Little Susie' on my Donald Duck record player back then...I've have flipped out over The Collins Kids!
Update.. Larry Collins has died at age 79 (Born: October 4, 1944, Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States Died: January 5, 2024) - his sister, Lawrencine May "Lorrie" Collins (May 7, 1942 - August 4, 2018). They were both inducted into The Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
Accidentally found discovered this duo poking around youtube. My god what a bundle of energy Larry was back in the day. He's a little slower and more laid back now ... it's hard to imagine it's the same person.
As Rockabilly being among my top three favorite music...I find it hard to believe I just learned of these two a few days ago. Now that's shameful. There are small handful of people that in its infancy directed western swing into rock n roll. Big Mama Thornton, Chuck Berry, among others and these "kids." This is a gem of an interview.
@@duygukayhanisaskank4915 rip now explain an industry that didnt turn these folk into international stars was the same with wanda jackson and a bunch of other rockabilly performers
Now I know where Jimmy Page got his stage act and costume ideas from!!!!! Wow ...never saw this chap and his sister performing before..so much energy!! So sad to hear Lorrie passed away. Very talented people and seem very down to earth and nice people. I regret not knowing about them before Lorrie passed in 2018. I think she is 69 years old in this interview in 2009 and looks fabulous!!! Very funny golfing story and the presentation of the guitar. "Go Back To Work". That should be the motto of lots of musicians and rock stars!!!
I came across their videos a few weeks ago. How come growing up in Brooklyn during the 60's I've never heard of the Collins kids. Larry was Elvis, Richard, Lewis, Holly and Berry all wrapped up in himself. And double neck guitar? Didn't know they had that back than. Lorrie was a superstar before the word was coined. And Larry was the essence of pure Rock & roll guitar player that is pure energy raw RnR.
I’d never heard of them until tonight, but after watching a number of videos it’s unbelievable that they didn’t achieve the widespread success that their contemporaries did.
I came across the Collins Kids in the mid 1970s: 'Beetle Bug Bop' was the song. There was a Rockabilly revival in the UK at the time. I had no idea they were REAL musicians - far more than just a novelty act. Phenomenal!
I loved the Collins Kids and being from Tennessee we had lots of local talent on tv, when we had tv, like Dolly Parton and hundreds of others on the Cas Walker Show. They were great and Larry was an exceptional musician and highly underrated, not to mention the Guitar Walk that Check Berry stole from Larry’s act. Thank you Larry and keep a Rockin!
These two are the epitome of the joy of entertaining from back in that era - pure, unadulterated, true and honest. And so talented. Don't know why they didn't become a bigger name or force nationally, but God bless 'em for warming our hearts...
I am amazed to see The Collins Kids who dazzled me all those years ago. My girlfriend an I used to watch them perform on a black and white oval shaped screen and every Saturday we were glued to the show anxiously waiting for them to make their appearance. It remains a favourite memory of mine. When Merle penned his famous song Leonard that filled in a lot of Larry’s life and to see them here is such a treat. Thank you for that. Watching this from Newfoundland Labrador.
I was never aware of these two gifted entertainers. I have always loved the blues and Rock a Billy and rock-n-roll. I loved Brenda Lee, the Doo Wop groups, Elvis and all. These two blow me away. The charisma, the showmanship, and just the flat out out standing singing and playing of song that these two gave us. God Bless! What icons they are!
My dad was raised up in Lone wolf Oklahoma. He also played steel guitar for Bob Wills, and filled in for Joaquin Murphy at Tex Williams village out in California. This sure brings back memories.
When I was a kid, On Saturday night my parents went dancing, so I would tune in Town Hall Party and then wait for Larry and Lorrie to come on. I had a crush on Lorrie, and I envied Larry's playing! Oh, how I wished I could play like that!
They brought the show to St. John's Nfld. during the late 50's if I recall. It was held in the St. John's Memorial Stadium. The show had been airing on TV for sometime and it was hugely popular. I was really into early rock and roll at the time and for us to see such a dynamic performance live in Nfld. was a real gift. I recall we had a chance to chat with Larry for a bit and he was very open and friendly.
Just discovered these two in those early black and white videos. I went through all the phases of rock and roll craze but I was floored the first time I saw them from those mid fifties clips.
Stumbled across this awesome duo, thanks to the internet. Incredible talent. I believe Larry Collins co-wrote Delta Dawn, a classic indeed. And covered by Australian singer Helen Reddy amongst many others. And sadly, RIP Miss Reddy and Miss Collins.
@@patrickcope6258 Yes Tanya Tucker had the first big hit with it, but it was actually first recorded by Bette Midler on her debut album of 1971, )best new artist Grammy), followed by Tanya Tucker's version in 1972, being the monster hit that is universally so well known, and then the Aussie superstar Helen Reddy's version of 1973.
Larry's story reminds me of Billy Elliott, the English dancer, who discovered his gift as a child and just couldn't control it. Artists get in their zone and do amazing things.
Ricky Nelson's Studebaker may have been the Speedster built in 1955, or the Avanti built in 62-63. I didn't look up what he had. Love the Collins Kids. Lorrie was an Angel. Sadly miss her. They were so talented.
@@mopreppinmolivin no such thig as a superhawk, lots of hawks but no superhawk., i don't remember him owning a studebaker hot rod, i guess is possible but my guess if he did it would have been the avanti
I loved listening to their music since the early 1970s we had a huge rockabilly revival and although we are not teens anymore we still love the colins kids hear in the UK. I think the collins kids got a big surprise when they come to the UK and thought they had travelled through time. 50s fashion and American 50s cars. The UK had turned American
Thanks, great interview. These folks are new to me, even at my age of 68. They have been a good find, I wonder how I missed them growing up. It was outside of Detroit so there was a lot of other music coming from that direction in those years
I read a sad story about Ricky Nelson, his father Ozzie broke up his relationship with Lorrie and many years later near the end of his life he spoke about his divorce and unhappy marriage, he said he only fell in love once when he was young and alot of people think he was talking about Lorrie , Ricky would probably have lived longer if he married her
It was actually sleazebag manager of Johnny Cash, being twice the age of Lorrie, and more wordly wise in the ways of women, who lured her away from Nelson and enjoyed the fruits of his labours.
Lorrie has said that Ricky's parents didn't want him to venture into Lorrie and Larry's style of RockaBilly, so Ricky often came to the Collin's house to sing and play. Ricky and Larry were both devastated when they heard that Lorrie eloped with the booking agent. I hear that Larry ran out of school, down an alley, sat down, and just cried his eyes out.
Thank you, being an Aussie, I'd never heard of the Collins Kids (I'm in my 60's but have collected music since my very early teens). I have a huge collection of music from late 40's to mid 80's and now I need to add a new collection. Thanks again, this was great.
Larry Collins was one of the greatest rock and roll guitarists of the 50s music era. The two of them were one of the greatest underrated acts in all of Rock and Roll history........
Studebaker Golden Hawk; 289 big block v8 with a Paxton Supercharger!! The original American Muscle Car !! I blew away several 327 Vettes and several T-Birds !!
Larry’s was before his Time when you watch him play that double neck guitar he was doing things no one else was doing l think he one of the greatest guitar players ever with the GREAT ROY CLARK and of course GLEN CAMPBELL
I think Larry "took after" Joe Maphis- the King of the Strings, and Joe mentored Larry, pushing him toward excellence so hard that sometimes he had Larry bawling.
@ Nancy Selzer , you missed out Rockin'Jerry Lee Lewis ---- Chuck Berry , Fats Domino , Little Richard , Sonny Burgess , Carl Perkins and Eddie Cochran
It's so important to remember Larry and Lorrie were two of the pioneers of turning Western Swing into RockaBilly. Their original Rock and Roll style, moves, and music were copied and even stolen by the "next in line" guys.
