Unless you've seen them live, you don't really know Status Quo. They were like a steam hammer on stage. An incredible live experience.

They ARE. Still going strong on stage. Status Quo IS the Status Quo on stage. It is the level you HAVE to achieve to be called at least fantastic as a live act. Quo is present. Always was, and always will be after they are gone one day. Just count the number of chamber orchestras, sorry, Tribute Bands, holding up their legacy and keeping it alive.

Their albums from the mid-late 70's are the strongest in their back catalog, and there are some really good remasters of most of them, but you really have to see them live, actually be in the audience at a gig, to really appreciate the power of the Quo! I saw them several times in the UK, including on their "End of the Road" farewell tour in 1984 (the first rock concert I ever went to), but after moving the US I have missed seeing them for the past 20 years. I would really love to have seen one of their "Frantic Four" reunion shows, as the YT videos are great, and a very good representation of what the classic 1970's line up could do with modern audio and video recording equipment.

@@garfield2279 I find that rossi solos are hard for the notes. They are all just blues scale/pentatonic. The hard part is his syncopation, the timing and rythym of his solos, I find it to be incredibly challenging to get the way he does. Also when he plays a shuffle in G or goes down to the F of the low E, it really hurts the hands. He has such a long pinky.

Do not underestimate Francis Rossi's ability as a guitarist. Check out two of the tracks on the Quo album " Piledriver" which close the first side of the vinyl version " A Year Has Gone" and " Unspoken Words". However, I had a patient from the UK last year, and he had this white concert shirt with just a ton of bands on it, and SQ was one of them. Checked them out on Spotify, and found that they have a ton of albums and still play. It was a nice discovery. Really good stuff.

In the uk their a stapel of the music scene. A bit like the grateful dead were in the US with just as fenatical a following that would fallow and attend miltable gigs on the same tour and your dad would very likely come along as well they crossed generations. Having said that the band that they became in the eighties when they started chasing the uk charts was not the band you see here after coghlan and lancaster left they became more middle of the road and the hard driving boogie and R&B became relegated to their back catalogue and now ricks gone ... well the quo of old is long since dead

Rick Parfitt was an amazing guitarist with iron muscles in his left hand. Our band supported them at one of the stadium gigs years back, and I tried to play his white tele, and the string tension was so tight and the gauge so heavy I could hardly pull the strings against the fretboard. He could do it, and produce that driving powerhouse sound. Totally impossible on a normal guitar. Quo works because they never took themselves that seriously, but were really good at playing off each other. Parfitt would steamroller through the songs, and Rossi would play, or not play, or do twiddly bits when he was a bit bored, or pull funny faces - but they'd always be back in when the song powered up again. Like most good bands, they made it look really simple. Look for their performance on night of the proms - with a huge orchestra who also join in the fun.

Rick Parfitt did a promotional stint at Harrods playing and chatting to a fairly small audience, it's on youtube. I saw them in Australia with Rick and they were great. All of the songs from my teens. In the 70’s they played and with the enthusiasm of a New band. Rossi was a great inspiration to many guitarist. Remember, no RU-vid, no tab, maybe a piano songbook. The songs may all seem simple and similar but they are all different and there is a tune for everyone if you listen to quo. st thing I ever heard by them was "Pictures of Matchstick Men" in 1968. I was 6 and the guitar and phasing were the coolest sounds I'd ever heard. Still love it!

From www.udiscovermusic.com/in-depth-features/so-what-is-psychedelic-rock/ Among the effects in question was phasing, arguably psychedelia’s single most obvious identifier - and, for once, The Beatles were only indirectly responsible. While holed up in London’s Olympic Studios in June 1967 to record the backing track for ‘All You Need Is Love’, their producer George Martin asked for “ADT” (automatic or artificial double-tracking, a technique originated at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios) to be placed on Lennon’s vocal. Unable to comply because Olympic’s tape machines operated differently to EMI’s, tape operator George Chkiantz pledged to devise his own outlandish tape effect - and came up with the sense-warping, harmonic frequency sweep which became known as phasing or flanging. "Pictures" was released in January 1968, so it's possible phasing was used. I'm not an expert so I can only go on what I've read on various websites. Cheers!

@garry smith 100% is phasing. I think it was done with tape reels with one out of phase (tape flanging as it is known but is closer to phasing) , some parts a Leslie maybe a univibe though u don't think so. It might not be a phaser like a phase 90 but it is a phasing effect.

The Lancaster-Parfitt-Rossi trio was really good - each of them great songwriters, and personalities - look at Lancaster fronting in the early days. A pity therefore that Rossi felt the need to dominate - for example, Lancaster's Backwater would have been a far better single than Break the Rules, Parfitt's Mystery Song much better than Rain. After Lancaster left it died a bit imo.

I very much agree. To have seen the tightness still there on footage of the ‘frantic four’ reunion tour after so many years apart shows how good these guys really are. RIP Rick.

It was the record company's decision to release "Break the Rules" as a single, the band wanted "Backwater" (by Lancaster and Parfitt) to be the single. I don't understand the part about Mystery Song vs Rain.

Quo got a lot of stick for 3 chords. Some of their best stuff is 3 chords. However, a few of their songs had 4 or 5 chords in them. As a guitarist myself for 40 years I rate Rossi and Parfitt as amazing musicians. Not just playing guitar but writing songs too. Some of Rossi's lead guitar is incredible.
@Rigstig1
@Rigstig1 4 года назад
I saw Rossi on stage earlier this year publicising his book. He was asked the age old question of the 3 chords, so he picked up a guitar and played 17 versions of the G Chord... a lot of the greatest songs in the world only have 3 or 4 chords, in fact Rolling Stones Satisfaction only has 3 chords and one of them is only played once... which is great as Im trying to learn to play guitar and it makes it so much easier..hahaha

@@Rigstig1 I'd love to know who started the three chord thing so I could them the kick in the sack that they deserved. Anybody that repeats it knows bugger all about music. I bet if you asked them "what is a chord?" they wouldn't even know. As you say many great songs only have three chords, and many of Quo's songs contain more than three.

Pretty much spot on!! Thank you for putting a number of things straight to the "3-chord" lemmings!! One thing though; it's worth stressing what Rick brought to the show. When I was in a band I suggested doing "Caroline"; long story short, our lead player, a much better player than me, suggested he did the Rick part and intro, and that I did the lead. Alarm bells rang in my head but I said, "OK, go on then. It's in F. Off you go." I gave it 4 bars. "Wrong..." I said. "Massively wrong. Not even close to how it should be played." "Eh?""You should probably have broken a string by now...Either that or you should be in some considerable pain...!" He's a better lead player than I'll ever be. But he didn't get it; and not everyone does.

I saw Status Quo twice in LA. They always opened for someone else. 1975 both times they took the place apart. Both times when they left the stage most of the audience booked. It was like the air went out of the balloon. My wishes I could have seen them as headliners. They were simple and they were Boogie. None of my friends and I mean none like them. It was pretty tough to be a fan but I played them loud. I guess you could say loud and proud. My one bass player friend said they sounded like Sabbath with The Monkeys vocals.

Thank you for pointing that out. For so many years I try to play this stuff - mainly the 70s Quo - along with the cd's. The most riffs are quite easy structured, but to play them really tight with this straight rhythm is hard work that allows not a single weak second.

Always liked The Quo since the 70's, they have been to Australia hundreds of times, and 3 to 4 years ago they had some fun on a TV commercial for Coles Supermarket doing "Down Down prices are down" it was a very catchy and successful ad. They where playing cardboard guitars in the ad, showing they don't take themselves that serious, very funny.

Love Quo and really enjoyed hearing your comments about developing a tight sound over years - in '89 I started gigging in a Quo cover band and 31 years later I'm still playing in a band with the same lead guitarist - Dave, sings like Rick but plays lead guitar - and I play rhythm but sing in the same range as Francis. Hearng a recording of Rick hammering out the Caroline intro live at the NEC was why I got an electric guitar and later taught Dave the essential 3 chords. And we were lucky enough to see the original line up at the end - Hammersmith - the Frantic 4 - 31 March 2014. Hard to believe Wilko is still with us and Rick isn't. Bloody good Wilko is - but Rick could have stuck around a bit longer :-( Good to hear respect for their precision.

This was my favorite band (with the possible exception of AC/DC) as a greasy long haired spotty teen growing up in mid 70s Australia. Blue for You was one of the first albums I ever bought and still sounds good today. . Sadly, in their later years, they were the face and sound of a major Australian supermarket chain's advertising campaign. Think "down down ,prices are down", it was as sad and embarrassing as it sounds, but hey, a bucks a buck. Thanks for the respectful review.

I remember at a festival (Rockfest Barcelona 2015) Status Quo were playing there the second year. Of course being mainly a metal festival almost nobody was interested on hearing them, including my best friend. He came ant told me “dude, let’s go eat something while Quo is playing” and I will be like “no, let’s wait and watch them, they’ll be really good, I am sure”. Well, then they came out and proceeded to have one of the best concerts in the history of that festival, like, every person inside there started to jump, dance and scream. They were like waaaaaay better than I could have ever imagined. Oh, and my friend simply stared at them while they were playing, looked at me and said “holy shit, they are amazing”. We still remember that concert as one of the best from the history of the festival.

It's always frustrated me how maligned Quo have been over the years, by both music journalists and fans. Mine their back catalogue and find altered tunings/complicated song structures/guitar interweaving and amazing performances. AC/DC have been doing the same thing for decades and get lauded for it (I love AC/DC too BTW) whereas Quo get slagged for it. Ronnie Woods and Keith Richards admired for their intertwined guitar lines, yet little on the Rossi/Parfitt juggernaut. All these amazing skills couple with great live performances, a sense of humour and consistently great shows.

We used to do a couple of Quo tunes as drunk audience pleasers. You are spot-on, getting it that bouncy and tight is nowhere near as easy as it looks or sounds. However, lucky for me the vocals were pretty easy, and the lyrics you can learn in virtually no time at all.

Unpretentious Rock 'n' Boogie. Quo always gave everything they had to give at any live gig no matter how large or small. All the best band's work as a team and Quo did that with each member having his own song's in the setlist.
