Starting off at #20 with the #1 tradition in college football is rough, but it feels great knowing you immediately said, "This should be #1." Those kids get so much empowerment each Saturday during home games. Imagine being in the worst place in life as a child and looking down on a stadium of 70,000 people waving to You! As an alumni, I know things can get crazy in the student section, but I've never seen a televised game since the tradition started that the student section doesn't have 100% participation.
@bbmikej

#9 has some context. At Bama, whenever they beat someone they do what's called the "Rammer Jammer". The next video with everyone on the field is what is referred to as the "Reverse Rammer Jammer" because the other school gives it back to Bama when they beat Bama.
@bbmikej

Also, that video of Auburn singing "All I do is Win" isn't even the best video of that entrance. Not to mention the Swag Surf from the past couple years has been better. And these lists never even have the best Auburn tradition of the War Eagle flying around the stadium before the game. Yes, and actual eagle flies around the stadium and lands at midfield before each home game.

All stadiums have a section for their marching band and many of the bigger conference schools have a section for the opposing teams band as well. The home band plays in the stands as well as on the field, tho some have a reserve band or corps that stays in the stands due to drill restrictions on the field Also the best band is Ohio State, Southern university, or Norfolk state

I love college football in general, for the reasons you describe, but as a Wisconsin alum, I am partial to the atmosphere at Badger games! But it goes beyond the Jump around - an older Badger game tradition is the 5th Quarter. After the game, win or lose, the band goes out on the field and completely cuts loose, with the fans in the stands singing and dancing. Lots of fun tradition there, you should search that and check it out!

More traditions not shown: Kansas State Wildcats: Wabash Cannonball. Students gyrate during the song that came from when the castle like building on campus burned down and the only music that survived the fire was the Wabash Cannonball. Kansas Jayhawks- Waving of the wheat arm gestures after their team scores. Texas A&M - the student body stands the entire game as if ready to come into the game to help the team. This is their 12th man tradition. A sizable percentages their students body belongs to the Corps of Csdets which is the largest ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) program in the US.

I’m an FSU student and have been a fan my whole life (despite being raised in Ohio). Although the tomahawk chop is an awesome chant, I think the best tradition is Chief Osceola riding his horse (Renegade) to the center of the field and planting a flaming spear at the 50 yard line. The Seminole tribe would plant a flaming spear from horseback to ceremonially begin a friendly contest, but during our rivalry game (against UF) Osceola plants the spear from foot, which the Seminole tribe did to signify the beginning of battle. The Seminole tribe is the only Native American tribe to never be defeated by the the American government in war. They were also made of runaway slaves, debtors, and fractured groups from other tribes. I think it’s a beautiful tradition to honor their history on one of the biggest global stages and as a community.

“Is that soldiers”? The answer is yes, Texas A&M, aside from the three military academies, enlists the largest number of officers into all branches of the military. They have the #1 marching band in the nation. Their halftime performances are never repeated. They also have a tradition that absolutely no other university has, and that is something called Midnight Yell. That’s where the night before a game, the band and yell leaders (Aggies don’t have cheerleaders) and about 30,000 fans march into the stadium @ midnight and practice their yells, sing the War Hymn, their Alma Mater, to get fired up for the game. Check them out for yourself, you will not be disappointed.

2:02 Texas A&M is a "Senior Military College". The concept of SMCs dates back to the mid-19th Century. Men who went to college were expected to round out the military's officer corps as reservists, joining the ranks of academy graduates in the event of national emergency/war. Most colleges have some sort of Reserve Officer Training Corps program - generally specific to a given branch of the military. SMCs are a bit more strident in their adoption of such programs. Furthermore, SMC cadets aren't always committed to a particular branch of the military - or even necessarily obligated to active service upon graduation (although most do serve). There are only a handful of true SMCs remaining. Texas A&M and Virginia Tech are the most prominent which come to mind. The Citadel and the Virginia Military Institute are others. Texas A&M's cadet marching band is quite a spectacle - worth a video reaction on its own.

👍The Aggies' 12th Man Tradition is one of my Favorites. The Cadets Stand during Games, showing they are ready to substitute in if needed in case of Injury. I'm not 100% certain, but I think it is based on a Historical game when they lost a man to injury and the Squad wasn't Monsterous like nowadays. Also, I think A&M has been in operation since the 1880's or 1890's(forget)💂🏈

#1 is so far off to me. For American football, the very best college tradition has got to lay completely on the Army/Navy game from start to finish. Best marching bands I think are Texas A&M and Ohio St. The single best band performance I’ve ever seen is the Texas A&M halftime show vs Texas in 1999, days after a huge bonfire collapsed killing 12 people. So much emotion packed into that performance but the band is so well drilled it’s truly a sight to behold. You can find a recording on RU-vid. Best Fight songs are probably Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas, Texas A&M, and USC. My favorite of these chants in the video has got to be Rocky Top at Tennessee, no backing track pumped through speakers, it’s just pure passion and emotion.

This is what college football does better than the NFL. The NFL can’t match the level of community and tradition that college football has. Most college fans have deep ties to their school and the schools in turn have deep connections to their respective communities. If you can imagine someone who went to college, it might the same college that their parents or even grandparents went to. If they’re local, they might know somebody who plays or played on the football team. That player may have gone to high school in the region, or if they never made it pro, after getting their degree they may have stayed in that community where they may still be a household name despite never making it big. Those are the kinds of relationships that can bind college football fans to their teams and you can’t exactly replicate that at the professional level.

Marching Bands are huge in American college football. It depends upon the band but they have traditions where they March from pre game practice to pre game concerts and then March to the stadium performing a pre game field routine then the generally move to their seats in the stands playing pep tunes. Once halftime comes the go down on the field and perform a halftime routine (generally a new one every home game) and then return to playing pep songs. After the game most bands have a post game concert and parade back to their practice facilities. The Big Ten are often know for their bands with Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan but also check out some HBCU bands in the SWAC (Southern University, Jackson State) these bands are almost more important in the culture than football.

Some explanations: The hand gesture at Texas with the index finger and pinky raised is their “hook-em horns” gesture. Clemson’s 25 seconds is not particularly exciting. It’s ok, but not any better than most other team entrances. Florida Stste is the only team with a Native American mascot that has the permission of the Seminole Tribe to use the characterization for their team. The “We are Penn State” chant was started to unify the university after a terrible scandal. An assistant football coach was involved in molesting underage boys and the university inckuding their beloved head coach covered it up.

And make sure to get there early and experience the all day tailgates that lead up to a late afternoon or evening game.

You should react to Kansas State or K-States marching band formations. Or just react to marching band halftime show formations in general. Kstate just had a really good one.

@@mertsalih College ROTC Cadets wear Uniforms... Almost like a Military Academy, but with Other Students mixed in..

This list hurts me, as an Ole Miss fan. #9, Alabama's rammer jammer (and subsequently Auburn's reverse rammer jammer), is copied from Ole Miss' Hotty Toddy chant. Because Alabama has been better at football historically, most people just assume Alabama's came first, when Ole Miss has been doing their version for about 50 years longer. A former Ole Miss band director went to Alabama in the 80s and adapted the lyrics to fit Alabama, and it was just called "Ole Miss" by the band for a long time. To this day, the drum major still signals for the chant by holding his arms in a big 'O' for "Ole Miss". We also happened to start the #4 tradition on this list, when in 2008 we were ranked #3 in the country in the preseason (we were horribly overrated, unfortunately) and they played that song while beating us in the 4th quarter and the place just went ballistic. We also started our rival's biggest tradition (Mississippi State rings cowbells at every game because one year a loooong time ago, they beat us after a cow wandered onto the field). Anyway that all said, I think my (somewhat biased) top 5 cfb traditions are: 5. Tennessee's Rocky Top 4. Penn State White Out 3. Florida State's Chop/Osceola 2. The Grove at Ole Miss 1. The Kinnick Wave at Iowa. Completely agree with you on that one. Most wholesome, lovely tradition in sports.

I was both surprised and happy to see we are Penn State as number one, however, the answer and call is probably more iconic than zombie nation because other teams use that song as well. It's also super cringe unless you're in the stadium but you gotta own it.

UCF does zombie nation better. Plus, our entire stadium bounces when we do. Yes, the stadium itself feels like a trampoline. I will say though, a Penn State whiteout game is a sight to behold.

This is 100% incomplete. You can’t have great college football traditions without the entrance of the Colorado Buffaloes. They run a real buffalo out on the field and the team follows her. RUN RALPHIE RUN!!!

S⭕️⭕️ner here. I went to our bowl game against Florida State (which was in Orlando so it was basically a home game for them) and they’re tomahawk tradition is by far the coolest I’ve experienced from any other team. Even in a stadium with 20k less capacity than their home stadium, it was deafening! It was an incredible experience. B⭕️⭕️mer!

Can I make a video suggestion based on the news that came out today? Tim Tebow and Reggie Bush were elected, amongst others, to the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023. Those two players were some of the most entertaining and dominant players of their time. You gotta check out each of their highlight reels.

Also, as an Iowan, The "I. O. W. A." chant is impressive, but I might give it up to The Ohio State.... It saddens me, but the student section in Iowa City really carries the chant and are the only ones who continue long after the cheerleaders wave their flags.. It turns into "IIIIII" "OO." "W.." "a.." "IIIII" "OO." "w.." "a.." "IIIII" "O.." "w.." ... "IIIII" "O.." ... ... "III" "o.." ... ... "II." "o.." ... ... "I.." ... ... ... "i.." ... ... ...

Why not Google the songs so that you can understand the songs and chants for the teams you're seeing. Alabama and Tennessee are Really hard to understand, like others. Give that a try. The words, not the ones that use songs we all know, but the ones that are specific to a certain area, like Rocky Top for Tennessee.
