I've got hold of a Canadian MRE (meal ready to eat) package. Unfortunately there was no maple syrup or poutine in sight, however, there may have been some delicious alternatives!

@maddoctor99
@maddoctor99 Месяц назад
@@GrandHoff I’m English and am as patriotic as the next guy, but what are you basing your “they’re English” comment on? M&Ms were copied from the English Smarties in the 1930s but were copied BY Forrest Mars (an American) and were originally made in their factory in New Jersey, USA. Nowadays they’re made in Mars factories all over the world including two in the States. They were sold in the USA from 1941 but only came to the UK in the 1980s. So they’re not English by virtue of being solely made in England (they’re not) or by being made by an English company (Mars is American, headquartered in Virginia, USA) or by being invented by an English person (they weren’t). BMW produces many of its SUVs in South Carolina but no one is ever going to call BMW an American car brand.

I was in the Canadian Army 20+ years ago, and the rations back then were pretty good too. My favourite was always the breakfast one of Ham steak and pineapple, or they brought in in a meatball in herb sauce right before I left, it was pretty excellent too. They don't look like they have changed much since I was in, except they have gotten rid of that awful, dense hunk of chemical laden "bread" and brought in tortillas, which look infinitely better.

Jelly is made from strained fruit juice, sugar and pectin so it is thinner and has no chucks etc in it....if feels like eating a thin jello spread. Jam and Jelly are just different things. Peanut butter and Jelly sandwiches started as a peanut butter and grape jelly recipe...but many people will do peanut butter and jam now instead and strawberry and raspberry are both popular jams to use....peanut butter and honey is also popular.

Hey! my cousin was in the CAF and he smuggled a few of these for me to try over the years. Here in Canada they are not called MREs but instead IMP's (Individual meal pack) and you would be issued your FRH to heat it up seperate. they have quite a few flavours but be thankful you DIDNT get the poutine. its a soggy mess of bland fry's and un-candian cheese curds. Wholly not representative of true poutine. if the pack is made after 2020 you one of the newer IMP packs that have the resealable tops, along with being waterproof (the old IMP was just a cardboard paper bag). Its designed to not only give you a high calorie meal, but also give you some home comfort (hence the M&Ms and nescafe). you need to heat the PB a little bit to get it proper but then you roll it and the jam up with the tortillas to make a P&B wrap! perfect for when you are on the go! Always lovely to see other people try Canadian things!

Barry and Stewart reviewing an MRE I've had before! I completely forgot about the beverage bag, I got these in Canadian Cadets and I distinctly remember them having to take out the matches before they gave them to us and there being a underground market of sorts revolving around the candy and better tasting meals / deserts. There were also ones that came in a vacuum sealed clear plastic bag that were okay but I think the brown bags were better.

As a Canadian I can confirm that we have both jellies (made from just juice) and jam (made from whole fruits.) However, it has nothing to do with the seeds, as Apple Jam nor Apple Jelly would contain the seeds. It's purely about whole fruit versus using just juice. It's also defined like this in traditional American cookbooks and for the purpose of trade.

It's always an awesome day when Barry and Stuart get together for another food review. This one seems to have stood up pretty well for a bunch of (necessarily) highly processed things in bags. It doesn't seem quite as nice as the Estonian rations Stuart reviewed a few years ago - sorry, Canada - but not a bad little selection, either. The date bar actually looked pretty good.

7:00 The difference is that jam has seeds (because it's made from crushed fruit) and jelly doesn't (because it's made from fruit juice). And marmalade is a jelly with pieces of the fruit suspended in it.

There was a Canadian MRE with a poutine (at least when I was serving). It was more of an homage to the poutine than a real poutine but it had the patatoes, cheese curds and gravy. When you were cold, wet and hungry it tasted like the best poutine ever.

Hope we get more videos like this! Info on the jelly/jam. Here in the US, jelly and jam are two different things. Jelly is made from just the juice and jam is made with the whole fruit.

Also it was Estonian rations almost a decade ago, but it’s easy to confuse them with Finland so no worries.

in America we have multiple words for fruit spreads. Jellys are made just from fruit juice and pectin. Jam are made from whole fruit or fruit pure. Perserves have chunks of fruit still in the mix. I don't think I have to mention marmalades.

Jam and jelly are different things. Jelly is when they just use the fruit juice and add pectin to make it congeal. Jam typically contains bits of the fruit and lots of sugar, and is usually a little different texture.

While we Americans call jam jelly, they are two different product and if you go to a store in the USA you will see nearly identical jars of next to each other on the shelf, one of jam and one of jelly. Jam is made with fruit pulp and jelly with fruit juice.

The ones we used to have in Sea Cadets when I was a teenager had bread that was basically a whole loaf compressed into a single slice.

Americans also say jam it just depends on what is considered a Jam. A jam mainly consist of seeds to where a jelly is more of congealed product with out seeds.
