Some prized artefacts in British museums are gradually making their way back to the countries where they originated from, but rigid legal impediments and political sensitivity have considerably slowed down the process of restitution. While many of the treasured cultural objects in Britain’s museums were gifted, some were previously stolen or taken by force, particularly during the colonial era. But returning the spoils of empires is far from simple, said observers. CNA’s Julia Chapman reports.

Very true. But the question should be what have my ancestors done or not do to lost all of those. Plus, contary to what many to believe, the British didn't take ALL the artifacts. You should also asked what happened to those artifacts left behind.

@@greatasia606 no, it should be that one wrong is made from another wrong. They don't protect their artifacts which lead to their artifact being taken. And in most cases, those countries are still in chaos and their best all migrate to UK.

@@yivunqp963so you are saying the Benin bronzes that was actually kept by the royal family of Benin in their palace didn't preserve it well only for the British to come wage a war against them because they weren't opening trade with them enough. Did the British find those artefacts in trash cans or in the palace. Or what nonsense are you on about

Angmoh gaos don't have rich cultures, they don't have many things to show. Without those treasures from other civilisations, angmoh museums will become like empty properties looking for new tenants. Ha ha ha!

Finally artefact homecoming? 😮😮 Attachment disorder syndrome is cured after a short(??🤣) sets of decades showcasing? 😮😮😂😂 Thought they love the song, never gonna let go...lalala🤣🤣 Of course, colonial empires will use law as an excuse to hide what must not be revealed. 😂😂 Too late the world knows the real empire keeps their dignity of keeping stolen artefacts after doing atrocities. 🤣🤣

They do but not in the magnitude of the British Museum and most of them are not stolen but are rather gifts and items from trade.

British museums help those countries preserve pieces of their history. Those artifacts would not hv survive till today if it had stayed in their respective countries. Be grateful.

How would you know had only not the french and brits seized these artefacts and displayed at their museums, the only fate befalling upon them must definitely be being destroyed in their countries of origin? An antithesis to the popular claim of these imperialistic european countries help preserve those treasuries is the old summer palace of china. The brit and french soldiers looted all the artefacts and then burned the summer palace to the ground, against the wills of the rulers of qing dynasty who were the originial rulers of those artefacts. In the case of china, the chinese have never owed the british for "preserving pieces of their history". Cos what had led to these artefacts being kept as posessions at british museum were actually past evil doings of the british towards the chinese.
