Where was I? As a huge Phillies fan, I sat on the couch watching the game, frustrated that they kept leaving the bases loaded and not scoring. Then the news spread, and the game didn't matter. The Phillies and the Mets united - we weren't rivals anymore, we were Americans! Our Phillies lost in extra innings, but the US won!

I’ll never forget watching this game live! The game was so long and so boring but my boyfriend at the time was there with friends & I was trying to spot him on tv. Bizarre connections: - The announcement was made during the 9th inning, tied at 1-1 (9/11) - The color commentary, Bobby Valentine, was actually the Mets manager at the time of 9/11 & I believe was the first sporting event to happen after 9/11

The Mets, Phillies and Braves basically share a three way rivalry in the NL East pretty equally since each fanbase are by far some of the most passionate in all of baseball. I’d say most Phillies and Braves would say the Mets are their biggest rival, while Mets fans would probably be split between Phillies/Braves depending on their age/location.

I still remember exactly where I was this night. My band was playing a show in Wilmington, NC. I’m a veteran, and spent time overseas, so when we found out what happened, my band decided that I would announce it to the crowd (we were the last band to play that night), so we came onstage, I had a shot in one hand, a beer in the other, I told the crowd what happened, downed the shot and chugged the beer, then we played our set. I was supposed to be one of the drivers to get us back to Raleigh, NC that night (2 hours drive). Needless to say, I had several drinks bought for me that night and I didn’t drive. I’ll never forget that night for as long as I live. Just like watching the events on 9/11 unfold which led me to join the military. Great reaction, man. Keep up the great work!

This still makes me weep. I wasn't watching the game. I was driving and the announcement flashed on a highway sign. I was on an American Airlines flight when the attack occurred and all planes in American air space were grounded as soon as possible. If you have never seen how every place a plane could possibly land was turned into a parking lot for planes, you should check it out. At least one was grounded in Canada, where the passengers were stuck for days. The Canadians really came through to help them.
@srellison561
@srellison561 Год назад
As many as 238 planes were grounded in Canada. 47 were diverted to Halifax, which is a fairly small airport and doesn't have anywhere near the capacity to handle that many flights, but they somehow managed. I remember seeing a special on TV about it. I think there was a miniseries and a movie about it, too.

12:07 To answer your question, yes. Last season, Seattle lost to the Astros in the playoffs (ALDS) after Jeremy Pena hit a walkoff homerun in the 18th inning. The game ended 1-0. No score for 18 innings! The Astros completed the sweep and moved on to the ALCS to beat the Yankees in a 4 game sweep.

Mets and Phillies definitely have a significant rivalry, especially when both were good in the mid-late 00's. But I'd say personally as a Mets fan (and I think the Phillies fans would agree), the Braves are the biggest rivals for both teams. If you're a (football) Giants fan in NY you may hate the Phillies more because of some residual hatred of the Eagles, but the Braves being so dominant in the division historically means they're prob the main rivals right now. But all 3 hate each other big time.

I remember watching that game. It was how I learned that he died. It was surprising to hear a "USA" chant break out and not know why. Players aren't allowed to have phones with them in the dugout, which is why they didn't know what was happening when the crowd already did. WWE was running their Extreme Rules PPV that same night. I was watching both. After the PPV, John Cena can out to give that announcement to the crowd. I'd argue that the Braves are the Mets biggest rivals now, but they definitely have a long rivalry with the Phillies. This isn't the only time the Mets have been associated with 9/11. I recommend looking up when they hosted the first major sporting event in New York 10 days after 9/11. It was a big event for NYC. The biggest highlight being Mike Piazza's go-ahead 2-run home run in the 8th inning.
@Fatblue246
@Fatblue246 Год назад
Mets and Phillies are probably each other's biggest rivals. The subway series rivalry(IE Mets vs Yankees)is a bit heated too, though as a New Yorker I would argue both respective teams have more of a rivalry with their divisional rivals than each other(the Phillies for the Mets, and the Red Sox for the Yankees). So I would say your assumption of the rivalry is correct. Realistically in the North East most if not all of the major cities are all within 5 hours of each other by car/train, which is not very common for North America. So the rivalries between teams from Boston all the way down to Washington DC are pretty big. The area is referred to as the BOS-WASH Megalopolis, it is where a large portion of the US populace is located. From NYC, Philly is only 2 hours, Boston 3:30, DC about 3:30-4, etc. Most of this corridor is linked by rail as well unlike a lot of the USA, so there are a lot of transport options and movement of people back and forth between the cities and regions etc. The NHL really took it to the extreme by having 6 teams all within the area in the same conference, 5 of which are even in the same division. It is just one of the few regions in the US where states are small enough and major cities are within close enough proximity to one another where you will actually see away fan sections etc in professional sports. That is less common in other regions of the US on the professional level, though not entirely unheard of.

I'm a Phillies fan and while I recognize the Mets won that night, I would like to point out that the Phillies won the division with a 102-60 record while the Mets finished 25 games back in fourth place with a paltry record of 77-85. Any time you finish with more than 100 wins, you are going to the playoffs and you are a good team. This season, the Atlanta Braves have the best record in baseball (currently at 102-56 with 6 games remaining and headed to the playoffs), the Phillies are in second (89-69 with four games left and headed to the playoffs) and the Mets are, once again, in fourth place with a paltry record of 72-86 with four games to go and headed home for the off-season. The more things change...

Its so strange, but watching this is bringing out a lot of emotion for me. I feel a buzz in my body like the day I had heard the news. Baseball and 9/11 are tied together in my mind. 9/11 happened right as the playoff race was heating up, and the attitudes towards teams such as the Mets and Yankees embodied goodwill towards NYC. The attacks delayed the games for almost 2 weeks, and as a result, the playoffs and World Series lasted into November. Almost all of our Fall was a time of meloncholy and uncertainty, but baseball was a bright spot in our lives. Guess who made it too the World Series that year....the Yankees of course. While it didn't end in story book fashion for them, it still was a great series that went to 7 games. For fans, what more could we ask for.

I was only 6-7ish and I remember everyone driving around with American flags cheering and happy and as a kid I looked up to the military I still have a usa patch a soldier gave I turned on the tv and saw that osama bin Laden was killed and now I realized why everyone was happy and waving the us flag and I was happy to be part of the crowd

Yeah, runner on second in extras IS called a ghost runner. Manfred Man is also acceptable in most circles.

The rule book refers to it as an automatic runner.

Mets, Phillies and Braves are all big rivals to each other. Right now Phillies and Mets fan probably hates the Braves equally right now. Cause the Braves have win the division 5 years in a row and won the world series in 2021 and has the best record in baseball this year. Also look up Braves lead off hitter Ronald Acuna Jr. He just made history

That was the day Obama won re-election (a year and a half before the election itself). It may have also been the last time the country was United in any way. Definitely check out the Mike Piazza home run in 2001. It’s a good prologue for this video. Both events were Mets related

I've genuinely enjoyed watching your videos. It's been a fun trip watching you learn American sports. But if you stray into politics that may produce rifts you're not be prepared for. Politics is bloodsport in the US. This is just a friendly heads up. Of course, it's your channel and you can take it any direction you want.

Yankees and Sox are the American League, Mets and Phillies in the national league. Yankees and Sox barely ever play the Phillies...Mets play them 19 times a year and barely play the Sox...Yankees play the Sox 19 times a year..barely play the Phillies, that's how the divisional rivalries are split amongst the cities

I’d say the Braves are the Mets biggest rival although it’s been a bit of a one sided rivalry. Phillies might consider the Mets their biggest rival, but honestly the Braves might be theirs too. Essentially everyone in the NL East just hates the Braves.

Actually there's an interesting fact not many realize, but this game being NY vs philly , for this to go down on that night is a bonkers coincidence that made the whole thing that much ore emotional. While 9/11 affected everyone nationwide, slowly too, new York obviousy had more intense feelings and rage for bin laden. Pennsylvania was the same exact way since one not the planes was brought down in pa. So these two vs and teams held a a degree of anger and, A pursuit for cold justice in a way only possible when someone comes on to YOUR HOMETOWN and hurts your peopl say it was personal for us would be both absolutely true and the understatement of the century.
