There are often "standing room only" tickets that allows stadiums to exceed seating capacity. Some stadiums break out standing room only tickets for playoff games and other high demand games.

I think that's the difference between the historic "over capacity" games in England vs. the US: The capacity in England was counting standing room, at least prior to the crowd-crush disasters.
@psymar
@psymar 10 месяцев назад
Stadium capacity is determined by the number of seats, but they will also sell a limited number of "standing room only" tickets which is how they go over capacity. There's a different number set by the local fire marshal which is how many people can legally be in the stadium; this is true of all public buildings in the US, not just stadia. I think Milton Keynes is like 13 miles from Wimbledon. Generally what fans do if their team leaves is either just root for them from afar, or just focus their attentions on other sports (we have plenty of them!). Rooting for far-away teams is pretty common given the size of the US; I live in North Carolina and am about 300-400 miles from the nearest MLB teams. As such I wound up rooting for the Cubs, who are about 800-1000 miles from here. Rooting based on ancestry or relatives also happens; I root for Hereford FC based on my great-uncle having lived there though I don't know if he followed soccer. (We're in the National League North, but we beat the West Brom U21s 2-0 today so maybe we'll get promoted this year? I'm hopeful.) I should mention that Kabuto is a generic term for any helmet in Japanese and not just a fancy Samurai helmet (which would likely have been strictly ceremonial and they would have something more sensible for battle.)

It's very sad when a team leaves a city, can't imagine what it feels like but I know Oakland fans are torn up about it, the A's were the last team they had in the city. Makes me glad to be a Phillies fan, we're the longest standing same-named, same-city team in American pro sports, been the Philadelphia Phillies since 1883 and it doesn't look like that's changing anytime soon.

As a fellow Baltimore sports fan, I’d just like to say that I’m very much looking forward to the next few years of Orioles baseball (and Ravens football of course, but that’s a given). The absurd amount of talent we have in our minor league system right now is simply, well, absurd - like, it genuinely doesn’t even seem real. I was absolutely overjoyed when we hired Mike Elias, and he’s somehow still managed to exceed my expectations - in fact, he’s exceeded not only my expectations, but even my wildest dreams.

Fun little bit of history about where the name "Dodgers" comes from. As early as 1895, the then Brooklyn Bridegrooms baseball team was nicknamed Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, due to the numerous (and hazardous) trolley lines that criss-crossed Brooklyn at the time. In 1911, this name came to be formally adopted by the team and, for the 1913 season, was shortened to Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1914, the team was renamed to Brooklyn Robins, after its team manager, Wilbert Robinson. In 1932, after Robinson had retired, the team once again returned to its earlier name, Brooklyn Dodgers. They became the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1958.

Mike Trout was having a decent, but sub-par year. And now he's injured again. I think he's out at least 4 to 6 weeks. The Angels are a few games over .500. This is a crucial stretch of the season and Trout's absence is a dagger in their hopes to make the playoffs.

The craziest thing of the 2023 season, so far, is Elly De La Cruz, the walking highlight reel. Or maybe that Acuna might have a 40-80 season. Or that Arraez might bat a .400 average; the first time in 80 years...or just Shohei Ohtani, in general.

The problem with the Cardinals catcher is you never want to be the guy that replaced a legend, you want to be the guy that replaces the guy that replaced a legend. Cards Catchers need to realize Yadi is not going to walk in the door. They have been spoiled by two decades of having one of best catchers ever.

I'm a Mets fan. When they were in Oakland this year, the possum was the big topic of conversation. The reason why they couldn't use the booth was that the possum decided to use the booth as it's toilet. The possum(s ... it's not just one) had been there for years but never pee'd and crapped all over the booth before. "The smell was unreal." And a cameraman had to man the camera inside the booth. Keith Gary and Ron (Mets TV announcers) kept saying how bad they felt for the guy.. And, to answer one of your questions, I had an uncle who moved from Brooklyn NY to Los Angeles the same year the Dodgers moved.. According to my mom, it was a coincidence, but knowing my uncle the Dodgers may have had something to do with him accepting a job in LA.

Regarding the A’s potential move to Las Vegas, you should react to what happened to the Montreal Expos! Also, in the NFL, the Baltimore Colts move to Indianapolis in the middle of the night!! Or in the NBA, the Seattle SuperSonics. There were other major US teams that moved or were threatened to move; even franchises that filled arena’s/stadiums but the owner was a deadbeat. In other cases, the teams were popular but the owner, wanting to move, would sell off star players in return for nothing, drop radio broadcasting, hike prices & force the commissioner for relocation rights.

There is an architectural safety calculation for combined exit width of corridors. Add up all the width of exit corridors in the stadium, then multiply by an (x) government codes factor = how many people are allowed into the stadium. So there are seat tickets + standing room general admission tickets = more people than seats. It is accepted safe to have more people than seats if you have wide safe exits.

About the attendance… Attendance for capacity typically only counts the number of physical seats in the venue, if there are, for example, bench seats, they won’t typically just say approximately how many people can sit on each bench comfortably and add that into the attendance. If the demand for the game is high, or it’s a playoff game, they will open standing room only sections. These do not count towards the official capacity, but I’m game time. The tickets sold count towards the attendance, which can sometimes make the attendance higher than the capacity. The Braves do this often. Our official capacity is 41,914, there have been crowds of over 45,000 at the ballpark.

@@RealDiehl99 Not to mention that in the early 1990's, the Patriots were close to moving to St. Louis, and becoming the St. Louis Stallions. But at the time, Foxboro Stadium owner Robert Kraft refused to let the team out of their lease, as it ran through 2001. Kraft eventually bought the team in 1994, thus keeping them in Foxboro. @@RealDiehl99 Yea, the late 90's - early 2000's Rams were successful. They won Super Bowl 34 against the Titans (another team that moved from another city a few years earlier, just like the Rams), went to SB36, and were primed to becoming the Team of the 2000's. But they end up getting upset by the Pats in that Super Bowl. They made the playoffs a few times after that, but it just seemed like after that loss, they just couldn't recover from it. And since moving back to LA, they've been to 2 SB's, winning SB56 in their own stadium. As for the city of St. Louis, hopefully their time will come. At least they got the XFL's Battlehawks for now, and have had the league's highest attendance last season.

Attendance goes by the amount of seats. So the Phillies have a little over 42k seats but with the ‘standing room only’ tickets, can go as high as almost 47k. I honestly don’t understand why they made Citizens Bank (Phillies) so small. It’s a huge city of 1.7 million in the city limits & many millions more in the surrounding area. It’s also a big baseball city. Newer stadiums in the NFL are being built smaller capacity too.

You guys should probably be made aware of Philadelphia fans and their reputations. Not only is their reputation as some of the rowdiest, toughest and arguably worst fans in any sports league well earned, they're almost always very proud of it. That whole "who throws batteries at players?" question you guys once had, well that's a Philadelphia special. Tens of thousands of Eagles fans famously threw snow balls at Santa Claus at halftime back in the 60s. Philly teams are the biggest rivals of most all New York teams, and their fans usually make us NY fans look like we wear full tuxedoes and top hats to games in comparison 😂 with that said, there are few more passionate fanbases in US sports, and those dollar hot dog nights in Philly are absolutely WILD. If you ever get a chance to see a major US sporting event in Philadelphia, definitely go.

relocation is interesting. but it doesn’t happen unless a franchise is BAD bad. it’s usually either move, sell, or go under. and owners would rather move than sell. city governments are a part of it too but that’s a whole other problem

One of the reasons some people are so passionate about college sports is because of what you were talking about. The university of Alabama isn't ever gonna move obviously and it's just a lot more personal a relationship. Not everyone likes college sports (weirdos dont, then they are snobs about it and say they like to watch "pros" as if the college kids aren't exceptional also) but most of us who do have an even stronger attachment to them because they can't relocate and fuck all of their fans over. I'm an Indianapolis Colts fan. The Colts spent their first 40 or so years of existence in Baltimore and they still hate our guts. Whenever we go to Baltimore to play a game it's like the super bowl for those fans. And I totally get it. Our current owners father was a drunk and wanted a new stadium. When he didn't get it he threatened to move to either Phoenix or Indy. The city then started the process of literally claiming the team as public domain and blocking the move so before that could happen he shipped everything out in moving trucks OVERNIGHT to Indianapolis. And just like that people who supported them their entire lives woke up and had no football team.. it's just really gross. Then about 12 years later the Browns owner did the same thing only he moved the Browns to Baltimore. And Baltimore fans were happy as shit and act like they didn't literally steal a team away from Cleveland the same way we stole the Colts. Like Nick said it's all business. It's gross but what can ya do..it usually comes down to wanting a new stadium and not being willing to fork over the money themselves despite most of the NFL owners being billionaires. They want us to pay for it and when people push back they leave...good on Oakland and As fans for telling them to go to hell. Move to Vegas if you want we have enough problems in that area we aren't gonna spend tax dollars on a stadium for a millionaire. I totally understand.

Trout's overall stats are still good but not "Mike Trout good" so he's settled down a little bit. The fact that he's healthy (knock on wood) should help the Angels in the long run and it's probably only a matter of time he starts raking again. There is a lot more areas along the concourses in American stadiums (outdoor stadiums anyway) where you can mill about and either watch the game or take in the concessions so the teams will sell "standing room only" tickets to games that will give you entrance to the building but not a guaranteed seat. You're sometimes allowed to take an unoccupied seat with an SRO ticket but you'd have to give it up if the seat's ticket owner shows up although some stadiums won't let you into certain sections if you don't have a ticket for that section. It all depends on the stadium and the security staff. It's fascinating what happens when a team moves. I've never had it happen to me but I know a bunch of fans of the Hartford Whalers when they moved to Raleigh and became the Carolina Hurricanes. Some of them became fans of other teams in the area like the Rangers and Bruins, others found entirely different teams to support, and some even to this day are Carolina Hurricanes fans despite them abandoning the area. I also know some older Giants and Dodgers fans who were fans back to the 50's when they were still in New York. Some of them are still Dodgers and Giants fans despite living so far away and some held out and became Mets fans. I'm not sure if any of them became Yankee fans though; that's just not allowed 😆. However, I have not ever heard of a fan following a team to a new area but people who move sometimes do start following their new local team while also cheering for their original team. Which team they cheer for when the 2 play is personal preference but most go with their childhood fav. Nobody confirmed that Tony La Russa put in a pinch runner because the fan told him to. He says the delay was because he was uncertain of taking out the player in question because he had a good bat and the game was still tied. But the timing did turn out pretty funny. I've never heard of a team wholesale pulling a catcher because of bad pitch calling. Some pitchers will ask for the backup to catch them but never the whole staff. That's a weird one for me.

I was a Willson Contreras fan when he played for the Cubs, and his pitch calling was not very good. Every opposing batter has a weakness, and the catcher needs to know that weakness so he can call the right pitches. Contreras didn’t stick to the game plan. But, the Cardinals pitchers have been used to pitching to Yadier Molina for their entire careers. It’s no surprise that they aren’t on the same page with Contreras yet. Catchers are the hardest players to value though. The Astros won the World Series last year with the worst hitting catcher in all MLB. His is his pitch calling.

Although the A's are having a bad season you cannot blame the fans. It appears they were being set up to fail by the owner to drive the attendance down which would serve as a pretext to move the team. As a former San Diego Chargers fan of over 50 years, I can relate and can sympathize with the fans of Oakland who not only lost an NFL team but who possibly can lose their legendary MLB team. Both of their teams have been successful and legendary which have left a significant mark in both their sports. I understand that the primary reason is due to a lack of a new facility being built but the way I see it, if you own a team and cannot fund a new facility privately then you should not own a team. Nonetheless, I can sympathize with Oakland when your team has bad ownership or is run in a way that alienates fans. San Diego sports fans have been victim to bad ownership with all of their professional sports team franchises from both NBA teams moving the Rockets to Houston and the Clippers to LA both terrible ownership even though both teams received above-average support while being at the bottom of the standings in virtually every year they were in San Diego. Although many fans were bummed out they left it cannot compare to the massive black hole that was left when the Chargers moved to LA. This team was beyond beloved in San Diego for over 55 years through a few ups but mostly down seasons the team was always supported. The city would bend over backward to give them free rent and even ticket guarantees for unsold tickets for years. And how did ownership repay them by constantly threatening to move to a vacant LA market to give them what they wanted? The city was even willing to split the cost of a new stadium at the same site they were playing at. Land which the city-owned only for the owner wanting a new stadium downtown like the Padres. Land that the city did not own, land which would need to be bought from those who owned it which would drive the cost up to over 3 times of the other site. As we learned later Chargers ownership was acting in bad faith. They were using the downtown scenario as a ploy to leave. They knew it would be virtually unfeasible to build a stadium that would be used only 8 times a year by the team and would remain empty for over 350 days the remainder of the year downtown. The owner had always had a hard-on for the LA market which remained vacant of an NFL team for about 20 years when the Rams moved to St. Louis and Raiders returned back to Oakland. Many people outside of San Diego did not see it as such a big deal for the Chargers to move 250 to 300 miles north about a 2 1/2 hour drive to see the team play. But what they failed to understand is the level of hatred and disdain people in San Diego have for anything related to Los Angeles, especially their sports teams. It's bad enough to lose the team to another city but to Los Angeles, I could not think of anything worse than that. I was a lifelong season ticket holder who knew a great amount of other die-hard season ticket holders who not only will never watch a Chargers game again but have permanently boycotted the NFL completely. You will never find anyone in San Diego who spend a second of their time on the Chargers. As far as we are concerned they are dead. Now on the other hand the Padres have forever cemented their place in the hearts of all San Diegans. For the first time, we have an owner who gives a damn about not only the fans but the city. He has committed to providing the resources to ensure a competitive team over the long haul. I understand they have not lived up to their potential this year and have been disappointing so far. Nonetheless, the fan support has been record-breaking, they have already drawn 2 million fans in 48 home games this year. They are on pace to reach 4 million in attendance this year. The fans appreciate and revere this owner like no other, he has been the first owner loved to this level. Especially if any of the previous Padres owners maybe for the exception of John Moores who was instrumental in getting Petco Park built and Ray Kroc who owned and founded the Mcdonald's corporation and who was spending the necessary resources to provide a winning product on the field. Sadly, he died the very year the team made it to their first World Series in 1984. Now to answer your question about teams moving and if a fanbase will support them regardless of where they relocate. I would have to answer NO! It is the worse form of betrayal, why should anyone remain loyal to a team after being abandoned? In fact, the team that was your team's rival becomes more loved and you cannot wait to see them destroy your former team. The only reason to watch would strictly be to hate-watch. My apologies for the lengthy comment but the Oakland situation has triggered my suppressed hatred feelings toward teams moving.

So Oakland is just across the bay from San Fran so there is a "local" team but in my experience you cheer for the Oakland team the last thing you want to do is cheer for the neighbour. As far as fans moving with teams, not sure but I know a few fans will still cheer for a team even if they move. I followed the Rams for example in LA and St Louis and back to LA never losing my interest or fandom. However, I know when the Dodgers left Brooklyn and the Giants left New York a lot of fans abandoned them. Many started following the Yankees while others started to follow the Mets when they came into the National League years later. (the Mets colours for example were a combination of Dodger blue and Giants orange) I would say it likely depends on your loyalty, is there another team to follow close by, especially a successful one. Is your love of the team worth following them. I used to love the Expos, still had a cap for years, the minute they became the Nationals they were dead to me. But I also follow the Giants and Blue Jays so they were not a "home team". The only one I can think where fans followed the team are the Raiders, fans in both LA and Oakland followed the team when they were in each of the cities and remained loyal to them when they moved from Oakland, to LA and back to Oakland. Did that continue in Vegas? Probably but I am not sure.

This is just my opinion on the Cardinals benching Contreras thing. The pitcher/catcher relationship is pretty important, and you really want them to be on the same page strategically. But the fact is the pitcher can shake off any sign their catcher gives them. It’s more likely a personality conflict or they think Contreras should be doing more when it comes to prep work for a game plan. But those issues probably don’t come up if they’re winning. Definitely some scapegoating
@jannix4548

The way it was explained was pretty much Yadier was calling all the pitches for years. Pretty much holding the hands of the pitchers. He would come up with the pitches and they would just have to have the control. Why many of the best Cardinal pitchers all had great control. Now that Yadier is gone Contreas style of catching is like a lot of other catchers. He throws out suggestions and sees what the pitchers want to throw. He doesn't plan the whole at bat and disect the batter for the pitchers like Yadier.

Angels fan here. Here is how the Angel's are doing. The Angel's are still contention spot but have been having a struggling 2 weeks due to multiple of stuff, however the trade deadline should fix those spots pretty well if done right. So let see what Arte last major moves with Perrry at the trade deadline does. Why? Well here who is injured. Trout,Drury,Neto,Moore,Suarez,Logan,Rendon but not put on IL yet it seems since he is been injured many different ways this year, but has been coming back in soon as he can,Austin,Ben,Gio,Jose,Davis,Chris,Jose, and Max dealing with family stuff. Now then, it sounds worse then it is but actually good news. Moore,Neto,and Rendon will be healthy after all star break. However,Drury will be seen today on if it is worse than thought since he hasn't reached progress on getting better. Trout is out until late months or playoff chances. Logan will be back in the last month. That means with certain players not doing good all year with some average guys called up, it has been brutal. Here is the roster and info for each. Trout injured, so Adell called up, has huge potential to do great and has the highest Stat cast home run in any league at around 500 in something just this year. A well needed player, he will play CF. Ohtani DH. Lf Ward/RFRenfroe, both underperforming in hitting. Ward should be near Trout numbers instead struggling again. Ya, Ward is actually has Trout like stats but struggles to keep them do to bad coaching. However, Renfroe has the longest slump and highest payroll option after this year, so may get traded, has amazing throwing arm to get anyone out fast from outfield even from the best runners. Moniack, very good top 1 prospect called up and should stay with the team years to come in thr OF. Neto fastest Angel's minor leaguer called by any team this year from last year's draft. Has top 5 defense for that position all year and growing bat. Those are just a few stuff since just so much to say, but they deffently still in it for now. The deadline will determine Ohtani's fait on what needs to be done and Angel's organizations fait overall. Angels fans either way have been having exciting year more than people know, but at deadline I believe we need to impact players with good defense, is great with Runners in scoring position, and we need 2 great starters atleast with maybe 1 or 2 solid relievers. May sound a lot but, not actually that bad since Angels have no choice if they want Ohtani. With these aquasitions, we can trade off players, out players on phantom ils who isn't needed this year, and call up our final prospects who are doing excellent to fill the roles of the struggling players. Hope this clears up where the Angel's at from Angel's fan perspective at this moment.

@DNReacts No problem. Will be deffently interesting what draft Angels get tomorrow. Heard the Angel's could go for a two way player later in draft, no guarantees he stays that way but, would still be good in just one role. Also, the draft could give some hints on what they go for if they may or may not trade Ohtani. Either way an amazing day for future players lives to change.
