Thank you so much for watching! Hope you enjoyed it!
If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make weekly "comedy" videos every Sunday evening. As an American living in London I love noticing the funny differences between the cultures and one of my most popular video series is my British VS American one. I'm also known for making terrible puns so sorry in advance. Hope to see you around, and I'll see you next Sunday! :)

imagine how devastated my year 6 class was when our school built a new building with a new hall and denied us access to the bench to “protect the floor from dents”. we had to sit on the floor with all the young peasants. it was absolutely heartbreaking 💔

To clarify something for those who are learning, when Evan says 'The bench' he doesn't mean literally one bench. The entirety of your average year 6 would not fit on one of these benches - not even close. Evan just meant it's always the exact same type of bench, the one pictured in the thumbnail.

Just a quick but probably petty correction: It wasn't usually just one bench. Basically for the Year 6's, and at my primary school, the Year 5's too, it was basically like 4-5 in around 2 or 3 rows for each class. Unless you're British, you don't know the absolute agony of sitting through a boring, hour-long assembly sat down on a cold, hard, usually dirty, floor. When you get to Years 5 and 6, it's such a relief and feels amazing. Although, that can be painful in long assemblies too, but not nearly as much as sitting on the floor is.

Can confirm that the joy continues on through adulthood as teachers we get to sit on the bench sometimes too and it brings me far more excitement than it probably should.

My mum bought an old school and converted it into a home, she kept two things from its school days. The student attendance book: which told you everything from who was off with measles to how many evacuees came in from the 1st and 2nd world wars and the P.E bench.. Yep. My mum has that bench sitting in her front hallway so you can sit there and take off/put on your shoes 🤣

Evan you should absolutely get a bunch of your British friends together and film you all playing bench ball for a video. It's important for your experience as a British citizen and I support it.

It's not about the bench it's about what it represents.

The bench was full-on PE apparatus. If you flipped it upside down it was a balance beam. It also had hooks on the end to connect to the climbing frame.

Bench makes you superior. Bench makes you royalty looking down at the peasants

We played bench ball differently, it was basically dodgeball but if you got hit you had to stand on the opposite teams bench, to rejoin the game your team had to throw the ball to you, the aim of the game was to get all the other team onto your bench. Kinda sucked if you were unpopular as no one would ever throw you the ball to rejoin the game 😅

The other thing about THE BENCH was it could be integrated into gym class in conjunction with THE APPARATUS. It had hooks on each end that could be hooked on to various items of THE APPARATUS (boxes/wall bars) on one or both ends to make a slide/ramp or a bridge.

Benchball is like basketball or netball but with the extra ✨ spice ✨ of the fear of falling off the bench and breaking your ankle lmao. I was scared of heights (even ridiculously low heights) as a child so that was fun. It got PRECARIOUS when your whole team was trying to balance on ONE bench AND catch the damn ball. Still an elite game 🙌

Everyone knows the superior version is bench ball-dodgeball

My primary school had 4 benches, because there were 3 yr 6 classes of 25-30 kids

I love that Evan an American has managed to make a 10 minute video about the bench at the back of the assembly in British schools.

In my school these were used for 'gymnastics' in PE lessons and then put against the wall around the assembly hall. Assemblies are conducted with the students cross legged on the floor (sometimes while a friend sat behind plaits your hair if you're lucky). SOME year 6s get to sit on the famous benches. There is often not enough benches to seat the entire of Y6.

Northern Ireland. Primary 7 (Kids Age 10/11) got to sit on Benches in assembly.

The power you feel when you go into Year 6 and finally go on the bench, it's just something we can't explain to non-British people

I still remember the sorrow that filled my 11 year old mind when I was FINALLY in year 6 and the school decided that the year 5s could also sit on the bench and we had to share it with them My chances of asserting my superiority over all the other kids had now halved. It was truly a sad day
