I would like to add that when qualifying if you do damage your car (hit the wall or worse) the driver generally needs to use a back-up car that is usually lesser in some way.

9:50 so in this specific clip the car who spins is on a qualifying run. Qualifying is where all the cars competing in an upcoming race do a lap or two by themselves and the starting order of the race is set based on those single-car lap times. The commentator was saying "KEEP IT OFF THE WALL" because damage caused to the car would most likely require the team to use a "back-up" car in the race, which is penalized.

Adding the complexity of lower Nascar series it used to be Cup, Xfinity, Trucks at the top of the Nascar umbrella like F1, F2, F3 for FIA Then K&N East (US), K&N West (US), Peak Mexico (MX), Fedex Challenge (MX), Mikel's Trucks (MX), Nascar Euro (EU), Pinty's (CA), Whelen Modifieds (US) are even lower level Nascar series. ARCA used to be it's own racing organization which was bought by Nascar and rebranded so ARCA now contains the old KNEast, KNWest, and old ARCA schedules. Nascar still has late model and super-late model series around the country and regional championships. Pretty much everything is a development series for aspiring cup drivers. There are rules about cross-over, and getting sponsorship to run races is tough in general, but most drivers will run select races in different series in a heartbeat when given the chance. There's really two main racing/driving categories - road courses and short ovals drive very similar (< 1mile), and then intermediate and big tracks (1.5 - 2.5 mi) drive similar. Larger tracks at higher speeds are more like flying an airplane than driving a car. Most of these saves going at 160 mph + are due to aero effects. When cars drive next to each other going so fast the air is like a vacuum that can suck cars to the side and you hear the announcers say "taking air off" the car. Drafting is slipstreaming. Tandem drafting is very noticeable with two cars locked together with the rear car pushing the front. Bump drafting is literally when the bump the car in front. However you could see bump drafting and pushing in larger group usually just referred to as pushing for short. When driving properly down a track, the car is parallel to the wall. If you start to spin in the corner and your car becomes perpendicular to the wall, the car naturally wants to back in to the wall as you go around the curve due to inertia. When a car is perpendicular to the wall looking like they are going to back in, they light up the tires which keeps them from backing in. The reason they want to keep it off the outside or inside wall is to avoid damage, it's not rule-based. Keep enjoying!

4:58 to answer your question you see when the car goes backwards or sideways a bit of the roof hooks up, well that is called a roof-flap and that's made for reducing air getting in the car ans flipping it also the traction on the track is quite low

@neiana

Your questions: Many of the current top level drivers (Monster Energy NASCAR Series, which is what people associate with "NASCAR") drove in Xfinity (Tier 2, usually 2 door coupes) and the Truck series before that. The reality is there are multiple smaller series one can drive in to get noticed and move up. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series has an east and west division and merged with the ARCA series this year to form a ladder system to get drivers from that level -- the 4th tier so to speak -- up to the trucks, then xfinity, then "NASCAR". The drivers are only allowed to go for one championship, though, and are limited in terms of how many races they can run in other tiers and furthermore they can't run during the "championship" final races. The MENCS used to be called Sprint Cup when it was sponsored by SPRINT, a local telecom and now it's sponsored by Monster Energy. Not a question but: "you can even see the top of it" is your reaction to, and I forget the actual names of the devices, but they lift up to create a bit of aerodynamics in an attempt to keep the vehicle from going airborne. There are obviously certain times when that's nearly impossible but it's what the design is intended to do. ahhh I think they're just called "roof flaps" "How do they keep it from flipping" -- well I guess you did eventually ask :D but if you see one of the vehicles turn, check out those flaps either on the roof or the hood. That's why they are there. At around the 8 minute mark you're watching cars that are several years old and I want to say that I think your 150 mph is possibly just a smidgen too high. When you're asking about keeping it off the wall, it's for one to save the car itself. The chassis could potentially break, the suspension, axles, etc, could break and make the car undriveable and when someone needs to go to a spare car, which they call "backup car" in NASCAR, they start the race at the rear of the field. So not only is it to save the car itself but it's also so they don't have to go to a "backup". When you talk about the stuff from the ground... NASCAR vehicles have "splitters" which sit at the bottom of the front of the car and is a really big part of aerodynamics. The grass is usually higher than the splitter, so when a car goes 150+ into the grass facing forward, it can tear up both the "infield" and the front of the car which in many cases, makes it very difficult to perform well. By the way, at 10:45 when the commentator is saying "save it brother, save it!" that's because they are brothers. :) Darrel Waltrip and Michael Waltrip. Regarding the wall -- during the race you have to maintain a minimum speed. If a driver wrecks and his car can't meet the minimum speed, he has only five .. err, maybe 6 minutes this year? It was 5 a couple years ago.. anyway he only has 5 minutes to fix the car to get it to maintain the minimum speed. The reality is that you can hit the wall and be fine--in fact there are many tracks where the drivers literally drive against the wall--but others they wreck and they aren't able to fix their car so they are retired. Also, I know you didn't ask.. but you do have officially sanctioned NASCAR events in Europe. It's called the NASCAR Whelen Euro series where they drive on well-known European tracks, and they have live shows on RU-vid and you can watch their full replays. They also have NASCAR in Mexico (NASCAR PEAK ANTIFREEZE SERIES POR FOX!), Canada (Pinty's) and they used to have a series in Australia and they had two exhibitions in Japan. Finally, if you read this far, I very much implore you to watch "The Day - Daytona Primetime". It was a very crazy race that was postponed due to rain, then had the first Daytona 500 at night, under the lights -- there was always the July race at the same track, but this was the first time it was this time of year (February... it's coming up, man! watch it!) There was even an explosion on the track during a caution. It's 45 minutes long but worth it. It's a bit of a documentary.

Seen a few others say it in the comments already but, hitting the wall doesn't penalize you or eliminate you. It's more to do with they are traveling at such high speeds that even the smallest bump on the wall will tear the car up. Even the smallest bit of damage to the body will hurt the aerodynamics of the car, making it drive much slower. As for why they spin so easily into the turns, it's alot to do with high speeds and the traction. It's pretty easy to over drive the car as you turn the wheel, sending it into a spin. Just another factor that makes it so exciting to watch. Keep up the great vids! Loving it!

Truck is like Highschool football, XFinity is like College, and cup is like the NFL. He was racing for the spot and did not want to lift at all 8:00 - Probably about 160-170mph 9:18 - Your not out till the car cant drive :) 9:45 - If he hit the wall, because this is qualifying, he would have to go to his backup car. That means you start at the tail end of the field as a punishment for switching the car. Hope this helps! :D

People brush the wall all the time in NASCAR and even if a car more than brushes a wall (aka crashes in to it) the teams can still repair them well enough to get them back out on track to possibly earn some more points towards the season standings. What they're saying is keep it off the wall so that it doesn't screw up the car and cause it to need repairs and possibly compromise its performance for the race as that clip was one from qualifying. Also the speeds they're driving depends on the track. The clip that you were in awe of the stadium was Bristol I believe, which is essentially a big ass stadium with a half-mile NASCAR track in it, but that's one of the handful of short-tracks on the calendar. A track like that they're not really going above 130ish I would say (I haven't followed NASCAR closely in several years so the exact accuracy of that number someone else can verify) while at many of speedways (1 to 2 mile tracks) and the super-speedways (Daytona, Talladega, Pocono, Indianapolis is probably considered one as they're long laps at 2.5 miles or so) the cars are approaching 190-200 mph before entering turns one and three. But considering how these cars are really meant to do one thing which is go fast and turn left (for the most part, NASCAR does have a couple of races at road courses each season) the saves that these guys are pulling off at anywhere from 120 to 180 mph is even more impressive than say an F1 driver doing something similar as F1 cars are much lighter, nimbler, and grippier with great brakes while a NASCAR is pretty much the opposite.

One of the safety regulations that came out a few decades ago are the roof and hood flaps. You will notice that when these cars get side ways, a flap extends out of the roof and sometimes the hood. That is an aerodynamic device that keeps the cars from getting airborne and also keeps the cars from flipping. Before that was a thing, these cars used to fly through the air like an airplane if they got sideways, or worse, if the got turned 180.

One thing that helps a lot of these drivers recover from these slides is many of them have a lot of practice with driving a car sideways through entire corners. Many started out driving sprint cars on dirt. Sprint cars drive through the corner in a controlled slide in order to make the most speed. The flaps on the tops of the cars/trucks and on the hoods are to prevent the cars from taking flight if they get turned around. They only open if the vehicle is going backwards. The drivers are able to save the vehicles from crashing through a combination of going fast enough for the rear tires to break traction and slide and the driver counter steering the vehicle. Coincidentally its the exact same as sliding on snowy roads, except ALOT faster.

Flipping is mainly a concern whenever the cars get turned around 180 degrees. This causes air to get under the car and generates lift. There are roof flaps on the car which deploy in this situation and create downforce which prevents the cars from taking off. Most wrecks you'll see involving flips were either before 1993 when the roof flaps were mandated or between 2007 and mid-2010 when NASCAR got rid of the rear spoiler and used a wing instead which would create more lift than the roof flaps could negate if the car got turned around at speed.

A lot of these drivers begin racing on dirt ovals - racetracks with a clay racing surface as opposed to pavement. It’s a completely different type of racing, as the cars are constantly forced into a controlled slide on every lap and the racetrack “slicks up” as the event unfolds. That’s why a lot of these drivers are more adept at handling the vehicle when the back end gets loose. A good example of this type of racing can be found here on RU-vid. The “World of Outlaws” is a sanctioning body like NASCAR, but the focus on dirt oval racing. They have two divisions: one for “late models” - a vehicle type with fenders that resembles a road vehicle (or “stock” car) - and another division for “sprint cars”. A sprint car is an entirely different type of racing vehicle. It’s an open-wheeled vehicle that looks like a buggy and only weighs around 1400lbs (about 630kg) compared to the 3500lb NASCAR vehicles. It only has a single gear and it has to be push started - it doesn’t have a starter or battery in order to save weight. It also happens to have 410ci engine that pumps out over 900bhp. It’s, basically, a rocket ship with a driver strapped to it. Also, just for clarification, the term “outlaw” in American auto racing is one that evolved in the middle of the 20th century. It describes a driver that would travel around part or all of the country and race at bigger events to try and win the larger purses (money paid to the winner). The local drivers and fans at these racetracks would refer to these out-of-town drivers as “outlaws” who would ride into town and “steal” the money from the local drivers. In the 1970’s, a promoter named Ted Johnson took the term and applied it to his sanctioning body for sprint car racing, calling it the World of Outlaws. Here’s a link to the highlights of a recent World of Outlaws sprint car race from Knoxville, Iowa: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZpPz1eMnjNY.html

the flaps that pop up on the roof when they go sideways is to push the car or truck back down and the low center of gravity prevents from flipping over. the technique drivers do is steer into the slide that's also how they save from spinning out entirely

To answer some of your questions. Most nascar main events or flagship tracks will run 130-200 mph. The “roof” coming up on the trucks are to help slow the truck down in case of a crash. These flaps are now standard on all nascars even at short tracks. The same drivers run the trucks in the truck series. By keeping it off the wall it prevents the car from taking damage. To much damage=the car can’t race because it won’t be aerodynamic which will cause some of these incidents.

When they get loose, you'll see them turn into the slide and slam on the gas to keep the car moving in the correct direction instead of sliding up the track and into the wall. It's called oversteer or "drifting." Also, the cars are built for aerodynamic efficiency. They're so low to the ground to keep air from getting up underneath the car. When you see a spectacular flip or roll start as they turn sideways, it's because air is travelling underneath the car and lifts it like an airplane wing. Aerodynamics matter so much at these speeds, that's why the cars are shaped the way they are and why they all stay in lines, to share air flow. You'll see two lines in most races and if someone ends up outside those lines, you'll watch them lose speed -quick- because of the drag on the car.

It starts to slide, you work the steering wheel and the gas pedal. It most of these situations, they are 100% on the gas. A lot of NASCAR drivers grew up racing on dirt tracks, in cars or on motorcycles. They learned and perfected driving while sliding and crashing.

Hi Luka, A driver is not out of the race for hitting the wall. The reason the commentator was saying "keep it off the wall" is because if you hit the wall the car will have significant damage, and during qualifying (when that particular spin happened) if you wreck the car you were trying to qualify, you can use a back up car (most teams bring two cars to each race) but you have to go to the back of the field on race day and start essentially last. So they were saying keep it off the wall to indicate it would be best for the team and driver to keep the car off the wall and not damage it. However, often times if a driver hits the wall they are out of the race, not because it is a rule, but because it will cause to much damage to fix and get back into the race.

9:55 Rules for qualifying: If a car wrecks, and is unable to be repaired (which is cases it could be an impound race, meaning that after the cars begin their qualifying lap, no adjustments other than tire pressures are allowed until the start of the race), then they will need to go to the backup car. Once they go to the backup car, the penalty for switching cars would be that the team will start the race at the back of the field. This also applies to teams that have unauthorized engine changes, transmission change, or any other changes to the car that NASCAR deems unsporting and can give the team an unfair advantage on race day.

Usually when those cars start to slide they control the cars with the gas and turning the wheel into the slide. Meaning that when the tail starts to slide out in a left handed turn, they cut the wheel to the right. Just like they do in drifting. The part that catches out most drivers, even the best, is when the car suddenly gets traction and they've got the wheels turned. That's when you'll see the cars hook and shoot off into the outside wall. NASCAR cars/trucks move around on the track a lot.

The little flaps on top of the car/truck and on the hood (bonnet) are there to prevent the the vehicles from flipping over. The flaps only lift up when the car gets very "slideways" or completely turns around. It keeps the cars planted.... most of the time.

To keep from flipping there are flaps on the roof to reduce lift. These cars are essentially designed like wings so that when the air goes over the top it pushes the car into the track. Sometimes, if one car is really close to the car in front the car will spin like the hit each other (even though there was no contact) by lifting the air off of the rear spoiler of the car in front. That’s how Dale Sr died. No contact, just air lifted off the rear spoiler. Just as important as engine and transmission, air over the car is vital for a good race. Not too much to slow it down, not too little to keep the car on the track.

When you see the cars get sideways when other cars are near them, but not touching them, it is because these cars depend on the rushing air to press down on the car, which in turn presses down on the tyres. When there are other cars around, they cause disturbances in the air that takes away some of the downward force on the car. The condition is called "aero-loose". It may look like a primitive sport to some, but the amount of science that goes into the cars, and the knowledge of those physical forces by the drivers is immense.
@soul-heart
@soul-heart 4 года назад
Cars get loose for a number of reasons. The first is if the car is already loose which makes it easy to oversteer into the turns and spin out. The second is if the air is taken off the car by side drafting. This happens typically when one car is below another and the car on top gets loose because there is a difference in the amount of air/air pressure pressing against the car and when another car comes beside it there is less force for the car to press against and the car gets loose. The final way that I can think of is when another car bumps the rear left corner panel behind the rear tire which almost every time will result in a spin out or crash.

@bdawgdriver3661

So I'm going to give a little bit of a technical explanation to these cars. 1) these cars ran as fast as they do because of downforce. Downforce is basically the air that the car is pushing through. And that air is pushing down on the hood of the car and the rear spoiler/wing. 2) these cars today also run with what we call Sideforce. Side force is the air that is pushing on the sides of the car. So when these cars get sideway the air that normally would be pushing down on the front of the car is hitting the right side of the cars which aids the driver in straightening out the car. Also in the clip around 6:34 the 20 car spun out because the "sideforce" was taken away by the 54 being on his door. So in that situation the air that would have been on the side of the 20 car was on the nose of the 54 which sucked the 20 around. I hope this makes some sense to you guys

More than traction causing cars to get loose, it is more air pressure being reduced at a rapid rate on sections of the car. These cars are built very specifically aerodynamically and when air is disrupted in an unanticipated way, it can cause the car to get loose.
@kennethv5250
@kennethv5250 4 года назад
the tires have no tread and the body is so aerodynamic that another car just getting close to you can change the aerodynamics and make you spin... also when the back end of a car is drifting you steer towards the direction that the back is headed to get out of a spin, also a key move in driving on snow.

NASCAR has 3 major divisions, NASCAR CUP SERIES (the top division of nascar with the best drivers in the sport) NASCAR XFINITY SERIES (The division directly below the Cup series) and the NASCAR GANDER OUTDOORS TRUCK SERIES (The division below Xfinity.) Both of the lower divisions serve as development leagues for drivers aspiring to become cup series drivers. Those series allow them to race on the big stages and make a name for themselves as they work up the latter.

9:30 This spin happened during qualification for the race. The reason the commentators keep saying keep it off the wall is because if he hits the wall he will have to start the race in a back up car. This means they lose all progress tuning the car. Depending on how the car is setup it could be loose which could make it lose traction while the driver is pushing the car to hard around the corner. Also the flaps you see on the hood and roof lift up to redirect the air to keep it from going under the car so it doesn't try to lift off like an airplane.

couple things as you are obviously new, hope some of this helps. 1: (9:39) They are allowed to hit the wall and continue, but if they hit it significantly it can affect their car's performance and cost the driver a chance at winning. In this clip was a qualifying session, which sets the starting order for the race. If he were to crash his car in qualifying they would need to use a backup for the race, which can sometimes be a lower quality "spare" car. 2: (2:51) There are 3 separate "national" divisions in NASCAR, the trucks you see in the video are the 3rd tier, the Xfinity series (just the sponsor, sometimes this is referred to as Grand National) uses older generation top series cars with slightly different bodywork, and the top division is just referred to as the "Cup" series. It's a fairly standard ladder system to the top level for rookie drivers (some of which are very young, minimum age to compete at large tracks is 18). Do well in local and regional racing, move to trucks. Do well in that you might be able to get to Xfinity. Do really well in that and you have a chance at Cup. 3: (4:57) The cars are actually pretty hard to roll over due to them having a very low center of mass. For example a semi truck (lorry in the UK) is 13 feet tall and can roll over easily where the vehicles seen in this are around 5 feet tall. The airborne crashes that you saw in previous videos aren't very common, especially in modern times as NASCAR has made efforts to keep the cars from taking off like an airplane due to safety concerns. 4: (6:57 & 15:46) What's great about these two clips is that they were in the same race, both times the same driver pulled off the save and he still went on to win. The driver's name is Kyle Busch and he is pretty impressive. He has a fairly polarizing personality and has had on track run-in's with some of the sport's most popular drivers so if you follow NASCAR you either love him or hate him. In 2015 he missed 1/3 of the season with a broken leg from a crash at Daytona at the start of the year and still went on to win the championship. He won his second title in 2019. The more into NASCAR you get you'll likely hear his name quite often. Hope you liked the tidbits, feel free to ask questions any time as we love seeing the sport grow, especially internationally (has received lots of hate over the years outside of america because people think it's just "cars turning left"). The NASCAR youtube channel posts full, commercial free races a couple days after they happen live and the Daytona 500 is only next weekend if you want to check it out, it is the biggest race of the year and the start of the new season so i highly recommend watching if you have some extra time. Not sure if the races are aired live in the UK, you'd have to look that up.

The reason why they are so good at catching the car when they slide is the vast majority of them grew up racing dirt ovals where you are sideways for the entire race. Also the cars are pretty much flat on the right side so the air helps straighten them out.

They stick in packs because of restrictor plates (literal speed restrictors on the cars) to use the air coming off the other cars as a boost (drafting), restrictor plates were the worst decision NASCAR ever made, they've killed several of the best drivers in the history of the sport, but NASCAR still didn't start to phase them out until 2018. Now everyone is just so used to running in packs, they still do it. Dale Sr. and Richard Petty (probably the two best NASCAR drivers in history) both said they were deathtraps, and restrictor plate racing ended up actually killing Dale Sr.

Jimmy Johnson's spin at 9:53...this was during qualifying. If he would have hit the wall he wouldn't have been eliminated, but the damage to the car would have forced him to go to a the back-up car and by rule if you change engines, transmissions, rear end gears, or damage the primary car beyond repair after the start of first practice then you have to start at the back of the field. Current rules state that after final practice NASCAR "impounds" the cars, meaning that the cars are to stay in their respective garage stalls and nobody can change anything on the cars other than changing tires and adding fuel until the start of the race. Any violation of the impound rule will disallow the qualifying time and they must start at the back of the field.

Most of the time when they don’t touch and still spin out, it’s because of the airflow over the car that causes them to lose control. If another car is nearby it is considered “taking the air off of another car” especially at the faster tracks.

So NASCAR at the top level has three series. The Cup Series which is the best of the best, top of the line, premiere championship of the sport. The "Xfinity" Series which is mostly made up of younger drivers working their way up to the Cup Series. A proving ground if you will. The cars are slightly smaller and slower than Cup. The Truck Series which is where super young drivers go to try and get to Xfinity, or where veteran journeymen of the sport go if their time in the higher two series doesn't work out. As for driver cross-over between series, NASCAR has cracked down on drivers from the Cup series competing in Xfinity and Trucks because many people complained about guys at the top of the sport, coming down to race in lower divisions. Think like Giannis Antetokoumpo showing up to a college basketball game lol. Hope this helps!! Love the videos

It's tough to tell on camera, and if you haven't seen one of these cars in real life, they are about half an inch off of the ground, and they're EXTREMELY heavy. And hitting the wall doesn't hurt you in the race except for tearing your car up and down time fixing it to get it back out on the track if you're lucky enough to get it back out that day.

A "save" is generally any time a car spins out and doesn't hit a wall. Cars do bump and rub during races and is considered part of racing, and don't always wreck as you can see. Because cars give a little in rubbing but walls do not. You hit a wall and you are guaranteed to have at least some damage.
