As a person who went to a 150 year old British-established convent school in an erstwhile British colony , I relate to each of these " vs British school" bits . Our teachers are now our own people ofc but those values are ingrained hahahahahaha. When I used to watch American sitcoms as a child, I'd never understand the leniency. Some occasions aside, I honestly do believe that some of these "stricter" values, molded me better.

Utter nonsense. The school system in India is a lamentable dysfunctional parody of the British system which in itself is modelled after the Prussian school, designed to focus on nothing but obedience and servitude. Yes ma'am, no ma'am, yes sir, no sir.

as a student that attends school in the U.S, the exam vids are SO accurate. like dude are students really that fragile to even be stressed over some simple state testing? (state testing is an exam we do to submit to the state's government or smth like that) trust me it wasn't even that stressful 💀- the teachers and staff made it sound stressful because they kept saying "you can do this". like y'know, the classic motivation and encouragement.

If you want to know how Asian schools or atleast Indian schools are- "Teacher, what does the question say?" They will scream the answer to a word you don't know, knowing the other children don't know it,then hit you with the "that's pretty obvious now,did you even study?" You would be randomly doing something in recess,a random teacher finds you and calls you to their room, scolding you for something you did throughout the recess, and you won't even be able to eat your lunch, finally you can get a suspension if yu don't immediately take out your books by the economics teacher,or if you forgot a book that was not needed

When I was a kid in the seventies, the kids selling candy _were_ the vending machines. Kids would sell candy door to door to raise money for band, football team, basketball team, student treasury for events, and so on. There was always someone selling M&M's, chocolate bars, bunches of Tootsie Pops, and plenty more. Yes it was against school rules to sell them during class, but teachers turned a blind eye to it when it was sneaked. They probably understood that school kids were their own best customers, and selling for school organizations was probably harder for students than it ever should have been. It was a way to hit up the parents for donations indirectly.

I went to Podar International School in my hometown of Mumbai in India where I did IBPYP (first grade to fifth grade), CIE Checkpoint (sixth and seventh grade), and CIE IGCSE (eighth grade to tenth grade), and then to Brehm Preparatory School in Carbondale in the US state of Illinois where I did eleventh and twelfth grade. I basically had the American school feeling of joy in elementary school, but the British school feeling of discipline from middle school until I was halfway through high school, and again the feeling of joy as I joined a real American school to finish my high school diploma. Whatever little bit of joy and happiness that existed at Podar during the sixth and seventh grade died out when we started eighth grade. That’s when the real discipline started. Other than PE, inter-school sports competitions, and probably student council, all other extracurricular activities were taken away, including art classes and clubs. My peers including my best friend Anish (if you can hear me macha) didn’t have it easy, but considering I have special needs like ADD and autism, it definitely wasn’t a piece of cake for me either. I was failing my exams, and I wasn’t doing well in academics. As if that wasn’t bad enough, many people I had made friends with over my PYP years either started making fun of me or turned against me, including this girl called Hiral Kedia, whom I had been friends with since kindergarten. In the ninth grade, things began to get worse. Many more people resented me due to the fact that I had a crush on this girl in my grade called Tanisha. I tried to visit her in her class during break time, but her classmates including this dude called Aryan whom I had befriended in the fifth grade all ganged up against me and physically pushed me out of their class. However, with intervention from my mom and dad, things began to change to a limited extent. Later in the 9th grade, they hired separate tutors for each IGCSE subject (Kamlesh sir for chemistry, Sujay sir for physics, Yogita ma’am for economics, Purvi ma’am for French, Dubey Sir for maths, and Tejal ma’am for Biology and English) and a shadow Megha ma’am. Things began to somewhat improve as she did not let me go to Tanisha’s class to visit her as she and a lot of other Podarites of my batch, including my juniors and seniors got over whatever happened. In the tenth grade, I was practically homeschooled most of the time by many of the tutors I had been working with since the ninth grade. I only went to school to give my IGCSE board exams (kinda like standardised testing conducted by the Cambridge international examinations). Over that time, I lost touch with a lot of my Podar peers and forgot many of their names, except of course for my friends Anish, Jonathan, and Aamir, and my crush Tanisha. Through the second half of my high school years, the joy and excitement came back during the academic day but it was kinda like a military base during dinner and study hall. In my junior year (2017-2018), we had many different options for recreation activities during the week (Monday to Friday afternoon), like bowling, hanging out and playing games at our student activity center, going out for coffee, and more. On weekends, we sometimes went to St. Louis for recs during the day. However, in my senior year, many of this stopped. LaNeal, the recreational coordinator was demoted to recreational staff as Aaron, the director of student life wanted to take over those responsibilities. His ideas were to remove off campus recs on weekdays and reduce us to a “community.” Ugh, like that helped. I anyways graduated in May 2019 and transitioned to this program called Options Transitions to Independence. Unfortunately, the British school feeling of discipline and toxicity came back. I don’t even want to get into too much detail regarding that as Kelly Vaughn, the college counsellor of OPTIONS (she supervised students who were taking classes at JALC and SIU) had serious anger issues. She was constantly shouting at me. Even my girlfriend at the timing, Danielle was fickle. The relationship was honestly really toxic. We had an ugly breakup in January 2020 and a whole saga occurred after that. Fortunately, the pandemic was somewhat of a blessing as I got to go home and be with my dear family for a year. Unfortunately I still had to deal with Kelly online. In March 2021 I returned to Carbondale, and David, an independent living supervisor at the supervised apartments at OPTIONS building X was toxically strict. He punished me for a mere prank call through an app to someone who was not even at Options. Anyways in my first year at OPTIONS, every time he saw me in sweatpants, he would force me to go change, even if it meant getting late to class. God, I had to face many people. I guess if a student commits a mistake, they believe in having as many people reprimand him/her until he/she gets mentally demolished. They even support each other through everything they do. They literally stick together no matter what, whether they are right or even if they are wrong. In my extension year (where the student lives in his/her own apartment and gets little to no support beyond academics) at OPTIONS, I told Kelly what I would do differently if I could turn back time to my first year at OPTIONS, she said “you know, I could have killed you.” I tried to bring this to Kristin’s (the associate director of the program) and Scott’s (the head of the program) notice, but all I got was “she didn’t mean it,” and “she was probably joking.” Dude, all over the world people, especially minors who are not even teenagers are getting arrested just for being falsely accused of making such statements, like where an Indian kid in Texas was accused of joking that his electronic bag was an explosive weapon and got arrested. What really hurts is that they did not even inform his parents. Such things are happening and Kelly is treated like royalty. Even worse, Alex the vocational counsellor at OPTIONS outright refused to work with me to find on-campus work at SIU, lying that “your visa will not allow it.” I tried to tell her that it doesn’t allow off campus work but it allows on-campus work, but she still stood her ground and lied that “your visa won’t allow it.” What really hurts is that everyone was agreeing with her. It was only after my mom spoke to her did she finally agree to work with me, but by then it was too late. It was April, the academic year was almost over, and I was leaving OPTIONS afterwards. Anyways, my parents rescued me and now I’m a full time student at SIU. I’m feeling a lot better now. Unfortunately, it’s not “the end” yet. Sam Daly, a guy who used to bully me at Brehm and OPTIONS is still doing so. Fortunately, another friend from OPTIONS, Max understands my plight. He is neutral between us though. Unfortunately, considering how much I resent Sam and Kelly I made a Brehm memes page to Dosa many people including them. Unfortunately, Sam found the meme page and informed OPTIONS. Max’s life skills supervisor Rod informed him that until that meme page is gone, he would not be allowed to transport me in his car. I mean, seriously, this is Max’s car. He and/or his parents are the ones who decide who can and cannot ride in his car. I guess OPTIONS believes “what belongs to OPTIONS belongs to OPTIONS. And what belongs to the students also belongs to OPTIONS.” I guess they are not there to help the extension students but are there to punish them. I anyways hope to graduate from SIU by spring 2024 and leave Carbondale lock, stock and barrel. Dot.
