Broke & Homeless in Thailand: The Tragic Downfall of an Expat

I interview Simon, a seasoned expat with years of experience living in Thailand and the Philippines. In this video Simon shares three stories that offer insights into the realities of expat life for some in Southeast Asia.
The first story delves into the unpredictable nature of life in Pattaya, Thailand, as Simon recounts an encounter with a man who once did well as a bar owner for 18 years, only to tragically lose everything and find himself homeless, sleeping on the beach and relying on begging for survival.
Next, Simon recounts a gripping tale of expat conflict in the Philippines. This story sheds light on the cultural clashes and tensions that can sometimes arise within expat communities abroad.
Finally, Simon exposes the darker side of expat life with a cautionary tale of a scammer operating in the bustling streets of Pattaya, Thailand. Through his personal experiences, Simon reveals the cunning tactics employed by opportunistic individuals and the devastating consequences they can have on unsuspecting expats. #thairishtimes #philippines #thailand

I was in a coffee shop group in Pattaya for a year or so. We would meet up a couple of times a week. In that time, almost all of them fell out with each other. Too much time on their hands, very strong opinions about the local culture and local people, gossiping about other peoples girlfriends, and a large degree of inequality- some of them plenty of money and some struggling.

Pattaya was just a small fishing village before the Vietnam war. It then turned into a popular R & R destination for soldiers on a break from the war. And people came from all over Thailand to make money there. Hasn't changed in that way.

Fast forward 10 years, he is in Thailand, i opened my house to him to get back on his feet. he just wants to take yaba and make empty promises. I am out 100.000 baht, and he is still in trouble. i am waiting for the obituary in the local paper.

If a homeless overstayer got arrested they wouldn't just put him back on the street. The embassy would work with them to get a temp passport to deport him, and they would try and get family to pay for return or last resort woukd pay for ticket and he'd have a government debt.

So 30 secs in we are talking about a guy who ran a bar in Pattaya, Geezer Bar. "He done quite well". After years of experience I have immediately profiled this scenario. It takes no experience to open bar in Thailand, and most of these guys have zero business experience, limited funds, no assets, no plan. It is all inevitable. Broke, alcoholic, desperate. To be honest these guys would be on a similar path back home as well - no hopers.

"Do not give money to the beggars." ... This may not be directly related to the video, but I want to warn all foreigners in Thailand. Most beggars in Thailand are not Thai, and they are organized either by individuals or crime gangs. In fact, if you are not mentally ill, you will not become homeless in Thailand. Thailand is a collective society where people tend to help each other. In case you have no money at all, you can 1) go back and live with your family or relatives, 2) go to temples for free food and temporary shelters, 3) find a job (which is relatively easy to find compared to many countries). ... "Giving them a money is equal to supporting human traffickings." ... Many people from neighboring countries were tortured and forced to be beggars in Thailand. Giving them money will increase the number of victims of this type of crime. The more you give adult beggars with young kids, it means more unfortunate kids will be kidnapped, or forced to be on the street. ... The Thai government has been campaigning for more than a decade for not to give money to the beggars. There were countless cases of beggar-related human trafficking crimes.

Expath in Pattaya lost it all went broke. Conman in Pattaya. Why is this tragic? when its 100% predictable, almost known after a few hours or nights out there. Its a life show with real people. Very obvious. This is why the Thai authorities tidy up and enforce existing and new rules on expaths. They dry it out or make it only affordable for holidays. Asian countries are not welfare countries like Europe. Things have in fact consequences.

Hi Scott, yes, it would be enough. Budget your lifestyle to your income. Try it for a while first, come for an extended holiday. Just don't lose everything by buying women properties or paying off their debts, or throwing money to the wind.

@@scottgeen3062 sorry about the late reply, you definitely have enough for a modest lifestyle as a single man. I would be aiming to live off the pension and don't touch the savings

Hey Pete. What language does this guy speak? It’s not English and it’s not Thai. Just wondering what audience you are catering to.

Wrong. It is English, but you can't understand it because your not familiar with his London accent. Have a nice day.

I had no problem following what he said, and I suspect anyone from UK or Ireland had no problem. We are used to hearing dozens of very different accents speaking English from all parts of UK.

The story teller is talking so fast like a machine gun and does not pause and the pronounciation is not clear at all , so most people can only catch about 10% of what is being said. I gave up trying to understand what he is saying after a few minutes and switch to another channel

The story teller has really very very very horrible pronunciation. Did he even been to school ?? I bet only 2% of the people here can understand what the hell he is saying . He is talking like a machine and has no pause in his speech
