At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

I wish I could smash the like button more than once. I'll collect rods from people, I've even pulled 2 from the lake bottom. I'll cut sections from a rod and insert & glue as you did. The one thing you didn't do is wrap the broken section, I'm artsy, so I probably would have wrapped it with red metallic thread. But that's me. Great job as promised
@MattStefanFishing

yeah i was just bringing it back from the dead. I could have added some thread but didnt feel it was needed. on a new rod I would...but this guy is lucky to be getting a second life so battle scars are acceptable. haha

I use this method to extend butt length for casting purposes. I find rod blanks at flea markets and use them instead of a non-tapered shaft. They slide into the butt end and need no arboring. Snug fit. Sand the outer part of the blank and epoxy it in. Then I use cork rings and make anew handle using files. Tru-oil completes the job. No extra weight and so far flawless performance.

Hi Matt. Thanks for the great video. My opinion is that rod balance is more important for the function of a rod than it’s overall weight. Im not saying that weight doesn’t matter but my favorite rods are the old Loomis Crankbait series 906 rods. They made the handles a bit short and they were uncomfortably tip heavy. I added a rod balancers to them which adds a couple inches to the handle and balances them. Now they’re a great versatile rod for cranks, buzzbaits and chatterbaits and they’re more sensitive. Btw I’m with you on the NE or the juicy style IPAs. Sooo good!
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 года назад
yep! thats why i mentioned that overall weight of a rod is not that important. the balance can make a heavy rod feel light so when someone tells me a rod wighs.4.9 ozs it doesnt mean much if its improperly balanced IMO

I suppose you can use JigSkinz aka shrink wrap or paint it first. Flex Coat has a cover finish that tends to peel if too thin. I'd do it with a solid coat like KBS or even Gorilla 5 min or something else. That part doesn't need flex. It's needs hardness and stiffness.

@stoneysdead689
@stoneysdead689 2 года назад
So, say this break occurred up in the blank where it bends- can you still just insert something like this or will it mess up the action? Does it need to be like a piece of another blank or something you know will flex? You can buy just graphite rods pretty much any diameter or length you want- we used to use them to make homemade bows- out of PVC pipe. Or you can get fiberglass rods- if you have a glass rod I guess that would make sense huh?
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 года назад
you can use anything that you want. just be aware that youre adding a bunch of weight if you stick a steel rod in it. ive never repaired a rod like this way up the blank...im not sure ive ever had a chance. it seems like they break off when smashed higher. my concern would be that you would completely ruin the action of the rod.

I broke off a rod tip of my Frog rod the other day, tried to take a piece of another broken rod, insert into the center, and epoxy it, and had no success. It held, but I put a bit of pressure on it, less than what I would expect for a frog hookset and it was another break. It was a Levante Perfect pitch, and I broke off the top 2 guides, about 6 inches down. I'm trying to think of a good way to repurpose it and just put a new top guide on the end and use it for something else, any ideas? Maybe big soft swimbaits?

I have a surf rod that broke 1' of the handle below the reel seat but the hole is about 1/2" ID. What could i use besides an arrow id there anything thicker?? Or can i use the arrow and just add more layers of tape or is that to shotty

you can use anything really. an arrow, an old chunk of a broken fishing rod, etc. just use the tape to thicken it up to fit snug

@@MattStefanFishing i got ya it makes sense because the tape just snugs it in center and the epoxy is gonna fill in the space and actually hold it together. Thanks

I snapped the tips off of two expensive rods. Is that harder to fix than the butt end?
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 года назад
no but it basically results in a shorter rod

@@MattStefanFishing I had a feeling that was the answer. Looks like I have a 6’ 8” flippin stick!

Roland Martin has a video on fixing the tips . He uses a drill bit the same size as the hole to attach both ends back together followed by some epoxy. Works well I've tried it . I'm sure there's some sort of Graphite tube out there that can be used as well.

Pretty cool, but all the rods I’ve broken were at the last 20-30% of the tip section. 😥.

You could have cut just the foam so you wouldn’t have lost your length bro

Ehhh...the walmart economy has given us hundreds of $19 rod and reel combos that make the guy holdin' it look like he's taken a break from the tournament to fish powerplant discharge with the locals.
