Thanks for the "closing the lip" tip. I had the same idea to use migration assistant but couldn't figure out why I was just getting a blank desktop background after connecting my broken Mac to an external monitor. Saw your video and I realized why. Thanks!
Similar problem. Black screen on MacBook Pro. Got a HDMI but it’s so hard to connect. And once it does it only shows the desktop background. Any idea how to fix this?
Thank you! I have been trying to connect my 2020 MacBook Air with a broken screen to a monitor. The piece I was missing was it wasn’t connected to the power adapter. Once I did that and closed the lid, I could see the screen! Now I am able to use it and back it up before I attempt to repair the screen.
Thanks, I have a Macbook Pro with a damaged display. I did not want to get it repaired with some personal information on it. Since this will allow me to clear the info I will probably have it repaired.
Great video. Instead of getting an old monitor, mouse and keyboard Can i transfer from a broken monitor macbook air to a new macbook air using a third macbook pro as a monitor and keyboard for the broken one?
Hi My Mac is broken, and as I connected thunderbolt to thunderbolt, screen showed up with recovery assistant, how do I close it and login with password as usual? It was last opened 2month ago Also, can I use mac using secondary screen forever because u know how much new screens cost
Hi!! I have got this problem on my macbook air 2020. It has vertical lines on the screen and i know the repair would be so expensive. As i have watched your video i thought of buying a monitor (cause it will be less expensive) and then connect my macbook so i can still use it. Can I do that? Instead of getting it fixed? Will it still work.
Hi There I have a Question Will this work in operating system failure ? Apple logo on the screen and looks like buffering I guess it will not, but just trying to find the solution
Did you find it out? Broken screen was working. Thru external monitor now as same screen u mentioned but when I close the screen I can't do anything. Not my system it's my brother's I thought pressing keyboard would turn it on it stopped working I need to fix this
What about if my macbook setup is every time I close the lid it will automatically sleep. How i will fix that? My sceen was totally broken same as yours..
Hi, thanks so much for the video. Question - is it possible to set it up with the cable to the screen and a mouse, and then log in, then open the laptop and use the keyboard, or would it shift back to an extended screen showing up? I ask because I have a mouse I can use, but not a keyboard, and I have a new MacBook Pro (usb-c ports) and it only has 2 ports so I couldn’t have three things connected. Thanks.
If your laptop screen is broken and you need to use the laptop keyboard - you could simply mirror the laptop screen (option in display settings once you’ve logged in) and you’d see everything on the external screen. There is also a way of disabling the internal laptop screen using Terminal, but I have tried this and it’s not that reliable. Another option is to use a USB C USB dongle to plug in multiple devices eg keyboard, mouse, charger etc, hope that helps!
Andrew Tsai Thanks so much for your reply, I went with the first option, and alternated between closing the laptop to see what I’m doing, and opening it to type and then got through to the option to mirror. I have now saved my documents! Thanks so much once again.
@@Andytizer hi sir. I got a question for ypu if you dont mind. If I cant turn on my mac anymore cuz it doesnt work, can I transfer all thr safari tabs and pdfs that it contained into a new mac?
@@youcefmersel7395 It depends which model Mac it is, if you have something before 2017 then you can extract the SSD/HDD and plug it in via USB to another Mac and Migration Assistant and transfer the Safari tabs, data etc to the new Mac.
You could use a mini DP VGA adapter (same as in the video). Or if it's an Intel Mac, just open it up and extract the HDD/SDD and get the data that way.
My screen is black. I can hear. The sound when turn on but. Nothing on the screen. I connect a turnderbolt to a vga. And on my second screen its shows. Like grey. And i can see the arrow only. I got acces using rhe command r. Etc. I already reinstall macos. But. No luck. Do you have any idea. ? Rhank you
Andrew Tsai thank you. For responding. When i started. My mack. It make that sound when turn on. But nothing appears on the screen. So I thought the screen its bad. And i using the tunderbolt to vga . Connector. To see if its the screen. But still no luck I cont see nothing. On the other monitor. That i have connected.
Hi Andrew, wish I'd seen this before I took my Mac Air m1 into get a quote😔 Thing is I fell on it from a great height......completely stuffed it up!..I've been quoted $2,580 to repair (2 months old) lol....my question to you is, can I remove my 512 GB hard drive to sell ? Thank you!
@@Andytizer Thank you Andrew for taking the time to reply, much appreciated, it took me 2 yrs to save for that laptop ( I'm retired) I doubt, I can buy another! Just really upset at the horrendous repair prices! I have subscribed to your channel as I still have an iPhone 😎
@@roselewsley4125 The best thing to do with laptops that fall is to use home contents insurance to get it replaced. It’s impossible for insurance to pinpoint exactly when a fall took place, they only have your word :)
@@Andytizer I have home and contents, plus portable items insurance....and they denied both...."not specified" was the excuse! But thanks for that anyway, appreciate the response :)
If you have an older MacBook (for example 2014} and another Mac 2018 with screen damage , it is any possibility to send the information to the old one?
You can do Migration Assistant like in the video. However the OLD MacBook needs have the same OS level or newer than your NEW MacBook for this to work correctly.
Hi thank you so much for this video. I did the same process when trying to restore my good old macbokk air 2012. But in addition to that broken screen i also have the question mark flashing. I am desperately trying to enter recovery mode. But whenever i try this (power +command+r button) the image source gets stuck in the macbook's screen rather than showing off on the monitor. Is there any chance to by pass this ?
Two methods for extracting data - (1) is to take out the hard drive and attach it to a 2.5" SATA adapter and then plug it into the new laptop. (2) if it is just the screen that's broken then you can use a similar method - attach to a monitor.
When it's only around 100GB of data then I think P2P wifi works well. You could also Time Machine to an external drive and then restore it on the newer laptop too.
