Thanks a lot for your encouragement it was hard enough to do the repair let alone document it with one hand heh. I had just moved and my landlord had sold the building and for that brief time - was basically in my own because the new owner didn’t think it was his responsibility and neither did the old owner - and I just wanted a bath.

That is a terrific idea, and is a simple job and the cartridge is free.

Those cartridges are free - just take out the one you have and bring it in and they give you a new one. It is a very simple job if people did it a little more frequently at least before they break off inside like mine did. I think it’s pretty clever and a good program. Now otoh I prefer bath taps that where you can control the temp AND the flow - for example if you want to trickle hot water into your tub. These positemps are full on with only temp control. I hate that.

I am sorry, I dont quite understand.

If you mean the part I didn’t use it’s a stopper that can be used to limit the travel of the lever and so you can’t put the tap on full hot. Now for me we have a mixing valve at the heat source so it already mixes hot and cold and that’s annoying because sometimes I want hotter water but as a safety for elderly and children it’s a lot better than a burn accident. I did another video where I removed my mixing valve entirely (my last house) check it out.

@@ClubFred6 yes it worked like a charm. The 18x1.5mm tap got the shell of the cartridge out perfectly. Very challenging to complete this job and wanted to quit and call a plumber more than once... But I didn't give up and eventually it worked out.

I would have liked to see, but yeah, if youre going to doument it, you need time, and when you have familmy pressured to get it done, with people lined up for a shower, you dont have the luxury. Thank you for your comment.

@rickh3149 can you explain this further? I feel like this is what I need to do but I am not quite understanding. I have the tap all the way in but I can’t get enough leverage to pull it out.

Thank you for your comment(s). I am an experienced renovator and builder (but not a plumber). I had an unfinished basement and I knew the wall could get a bit wet when I did it but it was worth it for me and I just did it quick. Even still I didnt really have water dripping on the basement floor. My video is also not a recomendation really - just a documentation of what I did. This repair is already not for a total amateur person with no tool or maintenance experience. Therefore I am going to assume they also have some critical thinking skills and can determine these things for themselves.

I cut up a pop can and use the thin aluminum to push in and under so it funnelled the water out.

I was prepared to pay at Rona and was told it was free. Since I’ve discovered replacement cartridges are in fact free - bring the old and they give you a new one. Hard to beat that deal.

@@ClubFred6 Sorry, ClubFred. Since there was no reply from you in the begining, I ordered it via Amazon. The part arrived yesterday, when I revisited your You-Tube and saw your e-mail address. It took more than 1 month. Today, I took out the broken cartridge finally. For me, the cartridge came out by only 2 cm. So, I had to pull it to pieces, using a Husky 10" plier. Then, I could pull the remainder easily. Thank you very much for letting me know of M18 *1.5mm tap. Without it, I would have torn apart the wall.

Glad it worked out for you. Amazing what a bit of ingenuity and the right tool can do eh. How much did you pay?

Haha, I ventured forth and had no clue so I just documented the process.

Hopefully I never have to do this again - it sure helps once youve seen the parts to understand what you can do. I would like to see your operation. Works well?

@@ClubFred6 not really its a pain in the ass.

As the last resort, I used a torch to melt the plastic, it worked very well and only took a minute.

FYI - I drenched it with wd40 for a few days. I was worried the smell would never leave the bath area.

What do you mean - are there added music that detracts? I’m interested and would like to do better so thanks for your comment. There was a fan in the bathroom that comes in with the light so I disconnected that.

Please tell. This is for Moen, its what was in the apartment in the first week I moved in, and between owners so I had no point of contact. Moen. If theres a tool that would assist me, I did not find it while researching this job. However, while I am an amateur and thats totally obvious in the video, I attempted this job with no preveious experience or knowledge, and the only tool I had to purchase was the tap, which actually works really really well, so unless the purpose made tool was similar in price for a one off, I doubt I would buy it.

I have no doubt that somewhere there is a professional tool for just about everything but honestly no, I did not know they made a tool for this problem of a broken cartridge and if they did it will likely cost more than calling a professional to do the repair. My solution is also a tool that works. Still would be interested to see this tool, please show me.

@@ClubFred6 look it up. Just google it. The two that are made by moen work pretty well. The third one is a combination tool that works on all problems even when the insides come out of the plastic outer piece. I have the moen removers. I just came across this new one last week. Ice used an easy out for this problem up until now. I was just curious about where you were from. I’ve owned a plumbing business for 50 years. I enjoy the work. I only work for my old time customers and a few new ones every now and then. I work to keep my brain and body functioning well. Yes I do know that they make a tool for just about everything. These tools will pay for themselves in one service call just by speeding up the time you are on the job and on to the next one. What does a plumber charge to come out and change out a Moen cartridge. Time plus the new cartridge? The cartridge varies then you should have a flat rate or an minimum charge. My minimum is $275.00 plus materials. So if I can get to two jobs in an hour Or at-least 1 job completed and on the other job calling it 1 1/2 jobs an hour then I’m making fair money 💰. But I’m slowing down some in my old age. A few years back I could pull up to a house. Drain & replace a water heater & replace everything around it, valve, new earthquake strap, ground wire and install a drain pan in around 20 minutes. Now that is not counting picking up the water heater or disposing of it. That total is about an hour depending on how busy the supply house is.

My hardest part was documenting it while doing it :). Glad it worked out for you.

@@ClubFred6 I had a question.... So when I removed my old cartridge I noticed that only one side had the black piece while the other was missing. Could this cause a leak inside the wall by chance? Asking cause this one is on the 2nd floor and I noticed a small stain on the first floor ceiling directly under where the shower is at. Just trying to determine if that was the problem for the small leak or maybe my shower floor is just leaking. Anyone help is greatly appreciated.

No, the cartridge goes inside the housing and is sealed off at the front with the rings. If those black rubber sides are mission, the unit will not leak inside the wall, however it will also not function well. Are you sure that piece is not still inside there?

@@ClubFred6 okay thank you very much. No, it wasn't inside I double checked and didn't see it at all. I've already done the repair as I had already bought a new cartridge so no more leaky faucet at this time. Still can't use the shower though until I find where it's leaking from which sounds like the shower floor. 🤦‍♂️

ah water problems - shucks. Anyhow I heard these cartridges are free - you just bring the old one to Home Depot or Rona. They gave me mine too which was unexpected.
