Broken Wood Handle Garden Tool? How to fix rake, shovel, or spade!
Please Like, Comment, and Subscribe!
If you have a lawn rake, garden rake, spade, shovel, axe, or other wood handled garden tool that is broken, there's a few things you can do to fix the handle so you can use it again. I used wood glue to fix the cracked wood handle and let it dry over night, sanded it smooth, and applied a mineral oil to the handle (you can also use boiled linseed oil or another oil that is easily absorbed into wood), and straightened out the rake tines and put it back together. If you are still having trouble you can try drilling a hole through the handle and the metal portion of the rake and put a bolt through it to tighten it up even more, or even Gorilla glue can work well.

You throwing the rake after it broke was EXACTLY what I did when my rake broke hahahahaha dad life
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 3 года назад
Lol me doing that was just a tiny bit staged but when it actually broke the first time I did exactly that 😝 you can only put up with so much before you start tossing things 🤣. Thanks for watching!

Was annnnnybody else secretly, Grinch-like waiting for the handle to split again, or the head to fall off when he started raking again, & him to get uber pissed and golf club chuck it across the yard? Or maybe I'm just the only evil Grinch here 😈😅😁 Good form, DIY Dad!

A good reason to repair instead of automatically replace, beyond getting back to your project sooner, is because there is no planet B. This is planet A, and its resources are finite. Our children and grandchildren will thank us for reducing, reusing and recycling.

Iwona and David Guier as an IT guy that likes to repair electronics rather than replace, this is why my mower is 25 years old and my vacuum is 30 😁. Also saves money!

I need the sleeve. I can find them anywhere. I'm to cheap to buy a whole new tool and just want to get my project finished

For 1-2 hour of your time and $15-20 you can drive to the nearest hardware store and buy a new handle that isn't beyond its useful age and be back to work that same day. I appreciate fixing things rather than replacing them but some things should just be replaced. This is a great option for anyone who cant afford a new handle and has lots of time to waste.
@DIYDad1

Yeah I eventually ended up just replacing it anyway lol this is great in a pinch though.

For those of you that use rakes for a living use pvc pipe for a lightweight forever replacement.

K.Kswag lol it might just get you by in a pinch if your crap breaks in the middle of a project and you need to get some quick work done. When in doubt maybe a couple of small screws and some duck tape 🤣. I’ve since replaced this rake anyway it was as old as I am lol.

Hi! Looks like it worked. = ) - my trying to 'fix' usually entails repairing what i need to work on first. ~ please Don't complain' that your Yard Rake isn't new, Old beats new Any day! It's a Great thing what you did. lol you didn't say 'dig up grass' - with that rake? Your grass looks too thick & healthy, use Fork or Shovel > Much easier.
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 4 года назад
Karen O yeah this grass is pretty thick back here I dug this corner up a bit to put in a garden along this wall haha! I still have this rake! I bet this thing is 20 years old or more. Thanks for watching!

What do you do if you don’t have metal collar
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 3 года назад
It’s probably held on with a different design then. You could put a wood screw through the handle to hold it in place put one on each side, or even use a bolt. Drill a hole through the handle and then secure it with a bolt through with a nut and washer on the opposite end. That’s going to be the most secure compared to just a screw. Hope that helps!
@jamesharris8583
@jamesharris8583 2 года назад
if it originally had a metal collar but it is lost or broken, maybe try winding it with baling wire.

Kinda interesting I do have a newer rake such as your that I am trying to figure how to get the sleeve off of Most of my tools are much different from this They are left overs from when my grandfather began farming in the mid 80s ....1880s that is My tools are mostly assembled by forge welding and the handles are desintergrating from just so much experience
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 4 года назад
Bob Clifton wow that’s cool that you have all those older tools, I bet those will last forever! I bet some of the handles and heads are pinned on or crimped on in some way. I’ve even seen some screwed to wood handles, I’ll have to take a look at some of my other tools. My shovel is pinned to the handle with a rivet and it slips over the top of the handle. Check out wrangestar on RU-vid that guy has a few videos on restoring tools as well, I’ll see if I can find a link.
