Authorized: February 4, 1944 and was retroactive to December 7, 1941.
Bronze Star Medal (BSM) is awarded to individuals who, while serving in the United States Armed Forces in a combat theater, distinguish themselves by heroism, outstanding achievement or by meritorious service not involving aerial flight.
Recipients of the Bronze Star Medal are entitled to wear a "V" device on the ribbon bar and suspension ribbon if the Medal is awarded for heroism in combat. Additional awards are denoted by bronze and silver oak leaf clusters or gold and silver stars, depending on the recipient's Service Branch.

My dad was with the 371st Radio Research Company (Army Security) in Vietnam. He was a linguist that crept up on enemy positions to intercept and translate radio transmissions. He saw some shit. He was in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. He was awarded his first Bronze Star while attached to the 4th Air Cavalry and another with 101st Airborne. He also has a received an Air Medal because he spent so much time flying in Huey's. As a kid I did not know anyone else's dad who ever got a medals like that. It still makes me proud. Thanks for your service everyone.

I salute you, Thank you for your service. I was too young for Nam but my dad did a tour. I remember how his returning home was both good and bad, that helped shape me to be the Soldier that fought hard. War is war but you guys have my utmost respect.

Similar, my grandfather received two as an engineer in Vietnam. Decided what bridges to blow, which to leave, and how much explosives to use, I believe when I looked up the life expectancy for his job… it was something like 10 days. He made it home safe, hope life treated your grandfather well after the war. ❤️

Without a V to signify valor it has become a participation trophy. With the award presented for a singular act of heroism a bronze V is attached to the ribbon and the awardees’ name is engraved on the back. To answer your question I have both awarded the award that had the V affixed was for a battle while serving in the Mobile Strike Force on A-401, B-40, C-4, 5th Special Forces Group. I had command of the 43rd Cambodian Infantry Company (112 men) as an E-5 buck sergeant.

The requirements are to basically be serving in a combat zone for starters. But the V device does depict heroism that differs from others. But they sick a V on arcoms now to avoid issuance of bsm. Nonetheless, thanks for your effort and surviving the episode.
