I was so uncomfortable but so enthralled. It felt like I was 8 years old eavesdropping on a conversation between my mother and one of her best friends talking about adult things I didn't understand but so badly wanted too. The amount of raw emotion between these two women was so powerful. I can never speak on their experiences but to see the resilience and strength of these two who were victimized as children in hollywood and yet managed to survive when so many others died speaks on their ability to adapt and keeping moving forward.

Drew is the queen of forming deep connections. She forges ahead where others fear to tread. Sometimes it doesn't quite work, but when it DOES it is so MAGICAL. Isn't that what we all long for? To connect with others in a soulful way and form deep friendships? I hope this becomes more common practice in our culture. Skip past all the formality and small talk and just be real and raw and open-hearted. It is such a wonderful, healing thing.

“You victim shame yourself.” As a survivor/thriver of sexual abuse, a thousand times yes!! The brain creates these pathways to help us survive, and healing work can unravel the guilt and shame. I think it's important to acknowledge that you can be a victim of a crime or of abuse and not have that become your identity or a" victim mentality". Sometimes people want to be referred to a 'survivor', and that's fine, but sometimes not all of you survives. Honestly think that term, "victim-mentality" is way of shaming women for feeling angry or ever talking about their pain. It's not the same as "playing the victim" if you actually had great harm done to you. It ends up letting the abusers off the hook. They feel no remorse. Then the abused or violated person carries this tremendous pain around all their life because they're afraid of what those dark feelings would do to them if unleashed. Not all anger is toxic. Self compassion and processing pain is not "self pity". It is a necessary part if healing and self advocacy.
@sahej6939
@sahej6939 Год назад
agree, “victim mentality “ is thrown around and used to hurt/shame women for speaking up about bad/unfair/inappropriate treatment. It’s not a popular word, but restoring justice (and boundaries)after being victimized/violated is essential. It’s not the same as DarVO, where the perpetrators act as victims

@pennPi

Agree. From my own experience and the research I’ve done, healing is a process and you can’t jump steps. If there’s been trauma, first step is to acknowledge and accept that you’re a victim. It becomes a problem if you just stay there. From that first step, comes the healing by moving through and processing the emotions and thoughts. And it’s not linear progress either. Ups and downs come with it. Understanding triggers. It can be exhausting but there is light. And it’s important to ask for help from people you trust. But most importantly listen to your intuition, and not the negative intrusive thoughts. Meditation, journaling, and prayer helps.

I love that she said these babies come alive and it doesn’t heal the broken moms. I at times feel like one. I thank God don’t have any addictions, but I lose my temper quick I realized after 6 months of having my kiddo. I work on this consistently as parents do since there’s many opportunities. I also remind myself to apologize when in wrong and to talk through what I’m going through in the moment. I know I won’t be the perfect mom. I know I won’t raise my child perfectly. But I will try to do right by her. I can see how Drew might feel about her mom as at times you do feel broken as a mom and yet you have this child that relies on you and at times is wiser than you. We will all get through this.

I appreciate greatly how beautifully it was woven together how when inappropriate things happen pervasively as a child how the child's mind has no real way to accurately make sense of it & how hard it is to then themselves behave appropriately lending to even more massive confusion & grayness. I felt similarly to the MeToo movement. Thank you for also shining a light on not getting lost in victimhood & being an example to look to. I have a hard time relating to being a victim or a survivor for anything longer than a few moments, but I do relate to being a thriver. Shoot, I wanted to hear why her mother was always in her interviews. I always wondered why that was...maybe it was her narcissism and enjoying Brooke's stardom as if it was her own..? She was a classic stage mom after all.

Everyone blames her mom but her father also allowed the abuse to happen and keep going. He as parents by law had the power to stop it. And the fact he ignored even not liking and not have a conversation with her, not check if she was ok it was unacceptable. Her mother was an abuser and he allowed the abuse to happen and continue. No, they couldn't speak on it but the adults on their life could've and should've.

2 amazing women. Drew REALLY cares about people and listens. I love how she isnt all about flashy cheesey regular talk show hosts.
