Pretty sure there was no way that could actually work, too; any admission of guilt under torture (which they could very well argue this was) wouldn't be accepted in court!

Fun fact apparently they couldn't use the rest of the set for shooting and that's why we only see the interrogation room. Sterling K. Brown was so good that he even got nominated for an Emmy for his performance in this episode, and the episode got nominated for an Edgar Award for best television episode teleplay.
The hard cut interrupting "etymology" to Andre Braugher's deadpan delivery of the sobering realization that "apparently that's a trigger for me" is probably my favorite moment of this whole show.
This episode is so Damn funny holt getting to his breaking point when the dentist brings up a point about college professors is one of the best holt moments
Fun Fact : when Sterling K brown won his Emmy on 2017, he said he was happy to follow in Andre braugher footsteps with his Emmy win A year later, he plays the dentist in this episode !
Like I have the urge to tell someone whenever I do something even remotely smart, just to get that feeling of appreciation and validation. I can't even imagine how it would feel for a psychopath to hear something they put so much thought and effort into planning and performing perfectly being minimised by a cop that they've been dominating the entire time
It is such a shame that Andre Braugher doesn't have more comedy roles. I understand that they hired him BECAUSE his background was cop shows but still. I really hope he does more comedy in the future. Same with Sterling K. Brown. His episode of SNL is incredible.
This is my all time favourite episode of B99. Everything about this was just perfect. The writing, the performance..from all three of them were simply superb. They tried something different from their usual formula and pulled it off successfully. It was clever and incredibly well made and still had that perfect amount of their usual humour. It also has one of my all time favourite Jake-Holt moment. That scene at the end. Their chemistry has never been better and it's so natural and gives us such a perfect father-son moment btw the two. And it ending with Jake saying "I love this job" is just the cherry on top, such a satisfying ending to a near perfect episode. Kudos to the writers,the cast! and the reaction as usual did NOT dissapoint :)
This episode is especially great for people who watched Andre Brauer as Det. Frank Pembleton on HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET whose specialty was interrogating suspects in the Box until they confess.
Not only is it generally a way of paying homage to an incredible series and Andre Braugher's unbelievable acting in it, this episode is specifically set up like one of the most wrenching episodes of Homicide: Life on the Street -- "Three Men and Adena." In it, Braugher and his partner/protege Bayliss have 12 hours to get a man to confess that he murdered a 12-year-old girl. Unlike in "The Box," they fail to get a confession and Adena Watson's murder is never solved, something that weighs on Bayliss throughout the series. It's painful but absolutely brilliant.
I love this episode, when Boyle showed up I realized that this entire episode was JUST Holt and Jake. And Gena with that small appearance in the beginning
I loved that decision to have Gina at the start and Boyle at the end. They could've easily just had Jake and Holt the whole episode and it would've still been amazing, but the use of those extra characters/scenes sort of frames it with a sense of normality that gives you a bit of whiplash when you realise "oh yeah this whole episode has just been jake and holt". Almost puts you in Jake and Holt's shoes. Perfect writing and structure.
Sterling K Brown knocked it out of the park in this episode. He even starred in a Lonely Island video ft Sia so we got two masterpieces with Sterling and Andy at the same time.
O Damn, O Damn, O Damn. Season5 really is my favorite season, given how many great episodes that it has and how everything seems to firing on all cylinders
This is a great episode, but I feel like Ding Dong is the peak. But everyone pretty much universally thinks The Box is the single best episode, so I’m happy to accept it
I think this is widely considered to be the best episode of all and I wholeheartedly agree. Everything is just perfect: Structure, dialogue, humor, all of it.
5 months too late but I had to comment LOL Sterling K Brown is also Gordon Walker in Supernatural. The unhinged vampire hunter!! He did awesome there too. It was such a treat to see him in B99.
So, fun fact about Andre Brasher, in the 90s he was on a show called Homicide: Life on the Streets and he played Detective Frank Pembleton and he was AMAZING in the box. There was an episode called Three Men and Adeena that won an Emmy that was entirely an interrogation. I think this episode is a tribute to that episode of HLOTS. Braugher was incredible as Pembleton. That whole show was awesome, actually.
I love this episode for many reasons, but one is what it focuses on. The last few episodes have 3 Plots going on at once, and it always feels like, okay this is boring let’s get to the good stuff. Putting two of the best characters be the only focus of the episode helps keep everything moving smoothly and quick. I didn’t miss any of the other characters because I actually got so immersed in the story that I forgot about everything else.
I just realised while rewatching that Jakes “You can’t handle the Tooth!” Is kinda foreshadowing how Jake beats him. Getting him to confess because of his pride.
I love they switch their style for this particular eposide, it was focus on Jake and Holt being detective solving cases. all the seriousness and little comedy moment balance so well. top 3 outstanding eposide in my opinion
Their camera work even shifted a little more out of their "genre" a little bit as well. When Holt was scolding Peralta about getting caught lying, I'm not caught up with b99 fully but afaik there is no scene shot like it so far
When you guys first started watching Brooklyn 99 one of you made a comment along the lines of "Man Jake and Holt work so great together" and I left a comment on that video saying "Oh you've got no idea." This episode is the reason for my comment
This gave me a lot of flashbacks to Breaking Bad when Hank would question Gus... All of the answers sounding too proud and rehersed to the detectives so they know SOMETHING is up
I was waiting for so long for you guys to react to this episode. It's honestly my favourite episode of the ENTIRE show. The comedic timing is great, the screenwriting is great, the acting and the overall 'plot' is really fun! It's not the most technically impressive episode, but it was the one where I had the most fun watching!
When this ep first aired I got sooooo excited seeing Sterlig K. Brown's name the beginning credits and knew this was going suuuch a good ep. He can act anything.
Would love so see more episodes like this. They truly stepped out of the box for this one 🙃🙃🙃 No, but seriously, I wish they would’ve done more episodes like this in terms of story and even directing. I like there was an element of seriousness and actual detective work in it.
Best episode in the show! Hell, probably in top 20 episodes in whole television history. When I first watches it, enjoyed it so much, rewatched it again immediately
Probably my favorite episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Just a solid performance across the board, great dialogue and a ticking clock. Wish we had a few more episodes like this.
Been waiting for this reaction as it's probably my favourite episode. Bottle episodes are great at having minimal characters work off each other well and this does that perfectly. Sterling K Brown's performance was fantastic, his long take deliveries really show off how clever the character is and his final speech about how he killed Robert is pretty chilling.
Definitely one of the best episodes in Brooklyn 99. Been waiting to see your thoughts on this since you starting watching the series. Awesome channel, keep up the good work lads.
@@Null041 that’s just not true though Imagine you’re a suspect of a crime you didn’t commit, the police have been interrogating you for twelve hours straight with no breaks, they’re telling you that they have concrete proof that you committed the crime (which is a lie) and that if you don’t confess you’re going to get the death penalty, a lot of people would confess to a crime they didn’t commit just due to the stress of the situation or because they see no other way out the same way people will admit to anything under torture That’s proven to be the case countless times throughout the US justice system
I watch your uploads at lunch everyday. B99 has the highest near death count of choking from laughing too hard. Today I ate my bowl of rice with such fear and awareness because God damn this was a great episode.
One of the main inspirations for this episode is one of Andre Brauer's earlier roles on TV as Detective Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Streets. His specialty was interrogations in "The Box". If you love The Wire, then you'll love Homicide: Life on the Streets. Both series are based on books like David Simon.
Oddly enough, the first time I watched this episode, it wasn't one of my favorites. But after rewatching the whole series countless times, this one is probably in my top 5. Sterling K. Brown has to be one of the best actors working today. He just has that "presence" about him. They had a LOT of great guest stars on this show, but he's my favorite of the bunch.
Jake did the guitar thing to Kid Cudi in Season 1 when he arrested Cudi just because when he had no evidence on a crime. He had 48 hours to get a confession or the necessary evidence.
This episode reminds me, you guys should react to the Netflix show Criminal: UK. It's basically the premise of this episode everytime with guest stars acting their arses off.
