January 29, 2009 | David Brooks and E.J. Dionne, Jr. discussed the lasting impact of Reinhold Niebuhr and Christian Realism on American political and theological ideas with public radio host Krista Tippett. They addressed how Christian Realism presents an enduring option for many aspects of our political life, from foreign policy and the war on terror to issues about religion's role in politics. As Barack Obama took office, there was opportunity to reflect both upon the past presidential election and the future problems and dilemmas that the next administration would face. Obama has cited Niebuhr's teachings as significant in shaping his own ideas about politics and governance. The session was incorporated into American Public Media's Speaking of Faith series, which Tippett hosts.

In Andrew Bacevich's estimation, Niebuhr would be appalled by the neocon adventures in the Middle East the past 14 years. Brooks was a huge supporter of such when it mattered, 2002-2009, as was Dionne's employer.

Brooks is a conservative and doesn't believe in government as a utility for the public interest.

@@LordGreystoke Brooks is also a sanctimonious lightweight. The problem with his belief -- which Reagan asserted, initiating the current Republican policy of anti-gov't sedition -- is that, per the Constitution, "We the people" are the gov't. Thus the Constitution is against them, as we saw on January 6, 2021. And we see implementation of that hatred of the American people in Republican economics, especially its tax cuts for the wealthy who don't need them, and often don't pay taxes to begin with. They are anti-social "Christians" -- the opposite of Christ's message.

this dialogue has dated itself, unfortunately. To go from the "Obama era" to the "trump era" seems as if Reinhold's thinking got completely blasted out of the universe and was entirely jettisoned by a people who are ignorant about words such as irony, paradox, and tragedy. Not to mention that ambiguity was also tossed out the window because those Americans who voted for trump could have cared less about any such notion and instead were manipulated by republican ideologues and Fox news into hating Hillary for no reason other than she was a woman and her name was Clinton. Trump voters blew up democracy for the hell of it and that tells you just how bad things are in the U.S.A. Yeah, 2019 is right around the corner and we'll see if trump gets the boot. But the essential problems of massive corruption, media manipulation, and the best democracy money can buy remain.

He's too much the arrogant ideologue. Bring up Trump and they dodge the issue to worship at the feet of Saint Reagan, who set the modern Republican policy of anti-gov't sedition.
